I took a self-defense course here, which was organized through the local Adult Ed/high school. It…read morewas very informative and I learned a lot, both about self-defense, and about Aikido. There's a man & woman who run the place (spouses, I believe). Very nice folks who can kick your butt. They ask that you "check your ego at the door" and the environment is welcoming and supportive. They meet you at your level and push to keep you improving. The room is large, with a cool painted wooden slat ceiling, and there is a humongous, cushy mat covering almost the entire floor. (I was told that the building used to be the old, old firehouse/hall). Mentioning the ceiling is worthwhile, as you do spend a bit of time looking at it, after repeatedly landing face-up on the soft mat during a class. I would have continued with my classes, as they were enjoyable; however, I was not comfortable with the whole "everyone's barefoot & we're all rolling around on the mat" thing. I realize that it's necessary for this practice. However, and this is just personal preference on my end, I didn't see anything indicating attention to that detail. Maybe if I knew their mat cleaning schedule and everyone had sparkly-clean feet, I'd be more willing to return. Of note, I do have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and may be bothered by things that others don't even notice. If you can get past the "everyone's sweaty and barefoot" aspect (&, I'm sure most people can), I'd recommend this place. The friendly couple and supportive atmosphere, plus the unique ceiling are worthy of four stars. And, if you're interested in "testing the waters", google Audubon Community Education, as they often team up for low-cost intro classes.

I've been going to this school for years to train and I'll always have fond memories of going…read morethere. Sensei Sam is friendly and a great teacher, always coming up with creative and funny ways to teach us the art. The school has trained many great black belts and those who come in to teach and train in the advanced classes are all extremely capable martial artists in their own right. The style of Aikido they teach is very practical and there is a definite push to ensure that what we learn is truly effective on the street. One thing I would say to a new visitor though is to be patient! Like any art, it takes time to become competent and effective at Aikido so be prepared to put in the effort needed to master the moves. It's well worth the effort!

Academy of Karate - "When I said 'true to size', I meant for a MAN. As a woman, you should ALWAYS know that men are default and your sizing needs don't matter."

When they arrived, they were way too…read morebig, and when I asked if they tend to run big, was told they are narrow and if anything would run small. I then read the entire description and at the very bottom found a line: "Women order one size smaller." I brought this up and was told, and I quote directly, "They are true to size if a man wore them. These are men sized shoes. Since your a women you would be one size smaller." It's a man's world, ladies, and if I were you, I would take my business elsewhere. I got stuck with a 20% restocking fee because they can't correctly disclose their sizing, rather jamming in a disclaimer where you have to click "read more" to see it, and I still don't have the shoes I need. Will certainly be looking elsewhere. Overall, this was a simple problem that could have been easily resolved without berating me about item descriptions and restocking fees. Customer service was unnecessarily rude, and I just don't have time to deal with businesses like that, and you probably don't either.

They were the rudest, worst people to deal with in my 35 years of martial arts. Unbelievably defensive, rude, and unhelpful at all. Seemingly unable to grasp the idea of customer service or even how to answer or ask a question. Overall - the worst possible, lowest condemnation. GO ELSEWHERE!!!

Academy of Karate - Looks like the right size to me! Oh, no, silly woman, I should known better and asked beforehand, since I'm a woman and all.

They enforce rules for the most part (no phones on the floor, put your coats in the locker room, keep your shoes on). Sometimes there's a client using machines incorrectly, making loud noises or grunting etc and it's not always addressed, but it doesn't happen often. The negatives about this gym for me are there is not a sauna (I love a winter sauna session). There are no classes, which isn't that big of a deal, but the problem is there is little room to do anything on a mat. The section with their mirror where most people go to stretch or do mat exercises can fit maybe 2 people, uncomfortably. It would be nice if there was a separate room or at least a bigger area. Perhaps the new squat room no one uses. Lastly, which is no fault to the employees or even owners. But we're leaving this gym because we are straight up tired of the men here. They will power walk around the gym like a weirdo. Come up to you to correct your use of the equipment. Or , like most recently, you will be curling 10lb dumbbells at 8am getting ready to tackle your day and some idiot will come up to you and say, "you gotta stop showing off though".... So needless to say, we're going to go to an all women's gym. If this isn't a concern for you, the gym is good enough.
