There were lots of carts available but the items were few. I wanted the NewYork chips on sale- but there were none. They would not allow another brand to be bought on the sale price. Next I tried to get 2 pretzels bags on sale- however there was one honey bag left- but I was forced to buy 2 since that sale price was 2/$7. If a store cant meet the sale - it should be waved to accommodate. The staff were helpful and the store was clean. I also saw special bags at the checkout counter but I always carry my own. Girlfriend bought organic strawberries on last Thursday. They had the nerve to charge $12.99 ?? Are you kidding us? I was not with her then and I would have brought them back if it was a returnable item. Store is extremely over-priced as it is, but this? One of the most helpful staff members I ever met works here. These people know their stuff. The selection here is varied and oddly enough they seem to have whatever your specific needs are. Jeff @ basic is an incredible nutrition & health resource. I've been going to basic food for several years for both food and supplements. In the last couple years, multiple unique health issues have come up with me and I've wanted to support these issues with proper nutrition & supplements. When I started asking Jeff questions, I realized what an incredible wealth of knowledge he is ... in such a WIDE range of health conditions & nutritional support. It is mind blowing. This gentleman has so much insight on health, and even the most complex health issues. With a recent health situation, I honestly feel like he knows more about how to support this issue nutritionally than some of my doctors (which is concerning). "25 year old walking into an organic food market" must be the equivalent to "kid walking into a candy store" and yes, okay, I am just talking about my own personal excitement when I walk into Organic Basic Foods. This great little shop has everything you'll need, it's clean and has really wonderfully friendly staff. Really what more could you need in a grocery store? I usually stop by on my way home from work and pick up what I need for the week. Their produce is always extremely fresh and they have a pretty wide selection. I can't help but get a little over eager and buy way too much of it. Hey, if you aren't throwing away half a bag of spinach at the end of the week, then you have got it together and I don't know if I totally trust you... Their Halo Top (my obsession) is always a buck or two less than anywhere else, and when you eat as much ice cream as me, that really starts to add up. They have all of the things you'd expect an organic food store to carry like kamboucha (and several different brand options of it) all of your Mrs. Meyer's cleaning products and a plethora of chips that will trick your brain into thinking snacking on them is no big deal (still possible talking about personal experience). They've got it all and you don't have to deal with the crowds and lines that you'll find at most other bigger super markets. Happy shopping! read more

Excellent mid-sized organic grocery store that has held this Washington street space for many years. My first stop is usually the organic produce. I'm regular buyer of their wonderfully fresh Tuscan Kale, just get it before they super-spray it with water. I've recently discovered their coffee aisle, a great selection, I now buy both organic Columbian bean coffee and a natural chicory/carob coffee substitute that I add to reduce coffee acidity and caffeine. The store really has 'everything'. Breads, meet, cheeses, frozen goods, boxed/canned goods, etc etc. You have to know your prices, because there are some items you may find priced better in supermarkets. Nevertheless, just browse the aisles and you'll find surprisingly strong sales on many products every week. You can't beat their selection of vitamins and herb supplement products, as well as the knowledgeable staff that will guide you. This grocery store has been there forever. I have never shopped organic but I came by since my wife likes it. The produce looked good depending on what you are looking for. The lemons and limes didn't look great though. I do get my vitamins from here and they always have a staff member there who is very helpful. They have all sorts of products here but I think you can get them cheaper from the big grocery stores. I do like supporting local places so I will come by from time to time. Check it out! read more

Basic food, basic sign, basically sometimes almost once in a while forget about this place since I live so far from Washington Street. Today - not so much! Don't drive to Whole Foods in Edgewater. Go here. While they don't have the lowest prices on everything, they have the best organic / non-GMO selection in Hoboken. I like to think of it as a mini Whole Foods, just without the crazy meat department. I find it useful to come in with a sense of what I need and just browse the aisles. What I walk out with depends on what is on sale, and the store is small enough that you can be in and out in 15 minutes (not counting the time you spend waiting in line to check out.) Today's haul consisted of Kashi cereal, gluten free bread and waffles, fresh ground peanut butter, Stacy's pita chips, pasta and organic sauce...all acquired at prices way below what I would pay anywhere else for the same things. I'm a huge fan of trail mix, and Basic Food is the only place around with a great selection of raw nuts, seeds, and dried berries to mix together into an awesome trail mix for obligatory healthy snacking. Be ready to squeeze through the store, as one baby stroller pretty much takes up the whole aisle, and lines can back up pretty deep into them as well...but that just gives you extra time to grab a few more things. read more

Great shop for those things that no one else has usually, I don't buy everything here but find there honey and olive oil to be good, I try not to buy chips but if I do I get them here lots of healthier options at good prices, they do a good range of unusual flours and pectin, lots of things that are a little obscure and difficult to find. Ten stars to this place if I could!! Absolutely fantastic store for someone who appreciates health and high quality vetted products. The owners do an amazing job of providing top of the line products for less than they normally cost. Fresh veggies, fruits, too quality meats, yogurts and dairy along with frozen and dry food. A HUGE AND AMAZING tea section. Will you spend a lot? Yes but it depends on what you choose and how much. You'll go home with very healthy items. You can learn to choose wisely for your budget if needed. I find for me that going OFTEN and getting what I need for the next week works best. Their multivitamin, probiotics and medicine section is also amazing. My favorite shampoo, conditioner and mouthwash is there by Nature's Answer. And they even ordered me the Coconut Hemp Milk for me and keep it in stock in the refrigerated section!! Please go support them, they will change your life. One of the best places for a chef with a visiting celiac to visit, the gluten-free selection here is second-to-none. Also a nice selection of soy products for the vegans in your dinner party, and prices aren't as bad as expected (although some of the more unusual, rarer products will be much more expensive, a non-wheat soy sauce 5 oz bottle cost me $7...). They also run a lot sales, something I would not expect from a store that is not a huge corporate chain. I am not someone who will spend lots of dough on organic products. A nice selection of grocery and health store items including supplements/vitamins. They even have a decent bulk food selection (steel cut oats, bulgur, etc.), which is sometimes hard to find. Prices seemed good to reasonable for some items and a bit high for others (though this was my first health food store visit so close to NYC so prices may be on par and I'll update accordingly). They were busy on a Sunday afternoon, while the rest of Washington Street was occupied drinking, frolicking, and watching sports (nothing wrong with that btw). I love Organic Basic Food. I started going here just to pick up my Whey Protein- I get the Biochem-Sugar free, 100% Whey (Vanilla or Chocolate) -free of all that artificial hormone crap, and only 90 Calories! They have plenty of of options but that one worked best for me. This place has such a variety of things that keep healthiness in mind and it's not expensive as most would assume. I picked up vegetable gluten-free pasta which is delicious, flax seeds, organic peanut butter, and a few others things. Ahhh another one of these organic places that popped out of nowhere. This reminds me of Trader Joes which I original saw first in Hawaii, and WholeFoods which is starting to pop up everywhere. I love Organic foods, and I try to eat them when I can, but the thing about it is that its expensive. Maybe if I leave my job one day and go to another one where the salary is a little higher, then I might try to go to these places more often. Anyways, on with my review. I stopped by here once with my baby after having lunch in Hoboken. The place is great. They have everything here from organic drinks, organic food, organic shampoos. What I like about it, is that its more personal here. The staff are so friendly I felt like I was shopping with my friends. You can ask them anything, these guys are experts I tell you! I ended up buying some probiotic drink here, since I was still full from our lunch and this would help with my digestion. Oh yeah, you can also have lunch here if you are in a rush, they have wrapped sandwiches from what I remembered. I havent been there since, so Im not sure if they still do that. Basic is my favorite organic health food store in Hudson County! I often lament the lack of Whole Foods near Jersey City/Hoboken (hate driving all the way to Edgewater or schlepping to the city), but I'm worried that a Whole Foods might put Basic out of business so I keep my mouth shut. Awesome selection of vegan, gluten-free, organic, and specialty items. A ton of herbal supplements and teas for all kinds of people and to address many conditions. They have a decent bulk bin selection, and they're the only store I know that carries my dog's favorite vegeterarian canned dog food. Best part? If you see that something you like is running low, then you can ask them to order it and have the item arrive the next day! The staff is very friendly and helpful, and I always discover something new and interesting when I'm shopping there. The prices aren't too bad either, especially for the organic status. read more

A huge, HUGE, variety selections of items from raw food to vitamins to personal care. It was such a delight surprise when I discovered that they carry One Degree brown rice cereal. I've been looking for this for awhile ever since it was recommended by Holistichabits, my favorite health/nature youtuber. Their produce also seemed fresh. I'm also happy that they provide testers for beauty/skin products. You want to be 100% happy before purchasing any expensive products like Mychelle or Dr. hauschka, and I'm glad I was able to "swatch" the items that I wanted to try. Located at Washington Ave. in Hoboken and close to the PATH train station this store has lots of healthy food and beverages, some produce and meat, soy products, dairy, frozen food, some ready tasty take-out food and also: vitamins, supplements, dietary needs, toiletries and cosmetics.
