I figured I'd just stare at the gorgeous views and flowers. When you turn around and see how far up you have to travel to get back to the top, it can be a little daunting. But, if you're in any kind of shape, very doable! Finished off the hike at 10 miles and with a huge smile on my face. Thank you Pt Sal fir an awesome day. Definitely doing this hike again.

Full sun throughout so I suggest you wear sunblock/hats/bring water accordingly. There is a little check in station once you walk about 1/4 mi up from the parking lot. Locals enter for free and out of town visitors are expected to pay something like $3.75 for adult entry. I love nature hikes. We did the main Cuesta loop (at least I think that's what it was called) and it took us a couple hours at a leisurely pace. I wish there was more plant diversity ato observe but it was all oak trees and grass. We saw some mountain bikers; the park seems to have some well maintained biking trails suitable for beginners. My partner likes this area for running but as far as leisurely hikes go, I will probably skip for a while.

Please DO NOT park in undesignated spots as you are likely to get towed. Adventure Pass or National Parks Pass is required for entry. Due to many search and rescue situations in the past, hikers may not venture past the waterfall at the end of this route. There is a large parking lot at the trailhead with BOTH free and PAID parking. The gravel lot to the left is free. The lined spots require a day pass which you can purchase at the general store a few miles down the road. Making it to the very top requires a little scrambling and rock climbing, but its doable. So many places to relax and enjoy nature. Overnight camping is no longer allowed, but if you want to hang out for the day and set up a little picnic there are spots and bathrooms. Upper Big Falls is currently closed until 5/21/21 due to public safety. The closure is from the observation deck up to the waterfalls itself. Do not hike or climb past the observation deck. Luckily we took a pick up truck because the creek water level in some of them were about 3ft deep. No 4x4 is needed but definitely helps, car height is more important. When we actually got to the end of the road we went on a hike crossing a couple more creeks. When just about made it to the falls it was tough to get down if your a inexperienced hiker or kid. You have to climb down with a rope, pretty sketchy.. We just decide to hang out at one of the creeks we crossed by foot, very tranquil.

This trail was at an incline. Small pockets of flat trail and backup climbing. I asked another hiker if trails meet together, and yes. However, they do, but their are several areas to enter/exist out of the trail. We learned that we existed out of the wrong area and asked these group of high schoolers how to get to Highland. They all said they were not from the area. We asked handful of other hikers & same not from the area. So we ended up going back up the trail, and once on top of the trail, we turned Left. 30 minutes and we were at the area we started off. Trail is mod to difficult. Beautiful scenery. Highly recommend early in AM hrs.. Just know 1st time read the signs on the trail because if you dont you will end up like us existing on the wrong street.

We actually didn't make it all the way down to the beach, but I did go into a cave and enjoy the view on the other side. Not sure if that qualifies as one of the Avila Sea Caves, but I will just assume it does. Parking was pretty easy. There is a small lot. No issues finding a spot since it was a Monday afternoon. We only walked down to the first cave, so probably spent a little more than 15 mins walking around and taking pix. If you enjoy water and a view, I'd say definitely check this spot out. REVIEW #3441

Pulled in around 1pm on a Sunday and was able to secure parking in the shade. Lots of good signage marking the way, many advising caution, but it's an easy hike. There were a fair amount of people enjoying the space. I'd love to comeback early in the morning after the rain and just hold space in solitude with the falls. It seems like a very sacred space and would love the silence of just the falls and the song of the wind dancing through the trees as it meanders through the canyon. Other hikers were there too but it wasn't crowded which is a plus. The falls wasn't huge but still a good amount of running water. It was beautiful and relaxing soaking in some mother nature. Keep an eye out on the entrance from the road, we missed it the first time and had to back track. Other than that, once you enter from the road, it's for the most part straight forward to the entrance of the hike.
