DO NOT RENT FROM ABBEY LANE APARTMENTS…read more
If you are considering renting here, read the fine print, document absolutely everything, and think very carefully about how you expect to be treated when you move out.
I lived at Abbey Lane for three years. During that entire time, I was a responsible tenant and never once paid my rent late. I took care of the apartment and held up my end of the lease.
Apparently, none of that mattered when it was time for Abbey Lane to return my security deposit.
Instead, they kept my entire security deposit and charged me additional money for alleged "unpaid rent and utilities"--charges I strongly dispute because I never missed or was late with a payment.
Then came the damage charges.
There was a chip smaller than half an inch on the stovetop. Rather than replacing the damaged stovetop, Abbey Lane purchased an entirely new stove/oven range without my knowledge and charged me for the entire appliance. I strongly disputed this charge because the amount was wildly disproportionate to the minor damage and, based on my understanding, inconsistent with Washington State landlord-tenant law.
I was also charged for a new door lock after my key broke off in the lock three separate times. According to the locksmith, the problem was related to faulty construction of the door/frame. The final time it happened, the key broke at approximately 10 p.m., leaving me locked outside my own home.
I attempted to call maintenance for help, only to discover that the maintenance number I had been given didn't work. I was later told that maintenance wouldn't have come anyway because being locked out because a key broke off in the lock wasn't considered an emergency.
Think about that.
I was locked outside my home at 10 p.m. because of a recurring problem with the lock, the maintenance number provided to me didn't work, and I was essentially told that it wasn't their problem until morning--only to later be charged for the replacement lock.
I was also charged for other items that I believe were ordinary wear and tear. I was never provided with a proper move-out/check-out list, and management produced photographs of allegedly damaged blinds that were not damaged when I moved out.
When I tried to challenge these charges, dealing with management became an exhausting exercise in frustration. Kahmia, in particular, was extremely difficult to communicate with. I found her communication evasive, unprofessional, and unnecessarily difficult.
Despite three years of being a reliable tenant and maintaining a perfect payment history, there was no meaningful effort to work with me or fairly resolve the disputed charges.
I believe several of these charges were inconsistent with Washington's landlord-tenant requirements regarding security deposits, tenant-caused damage, and ordinary wear and tear.
I seriously considered taking Abbey Lane to small claims court over these charges. Unfortunately, because I am disabled and unable to pursue that process, I was put in the position of paying disputed fees simply to avoid the possibility of having them sent to collections.
That is the part that makes this experience so infuriating.
I wasn't trying to get out of paying for legitimate damage. I was asking to be treated fairly and charged reasonably. After three years of being a good tenant, I expected a transparent move-out process--not what felt like an aggressive attempt to turn every minor issue into another charge.
My experience has completely changed my opinion of Abbey Lane.
If you rent here, protect yourself. Take detailed photos and videos before moving in and when moving out. Document every maintenance issue. Save every email, payment confirmation, photograph, and communication. Don't assume that being a responsible tenant with a perfect payment history will protect your security deposit.
Because based on my experience, when it came time for me to move out, it felt like the goal was no longer to treat me like a longtime tenant--it was to find as many reasons as possible to keep my money.
Three years of being a responsible tenant deserved better.
I would not recommend Abbey Lane Apartments to anyone.
