Only for inspection but failed because of faulty horn. Told to leave the car to be fixed and it would be done later that day. When I checked back later, they said they still didn't have the parts but it will be done later that day. Insisted to leave the car rather than I bring it back. Ended with car staying in their shop for 4 days costing just below $800 including the inspection fee. Labor cost just below $400 even though I didn't ask for the extra service of change oil and changing all the filters. Disregarding that extra service I think labor of $400 was pretty steep. I think was charged that high because my car stayed there unnecessarily for 4 days. I will never come back!!! read more

However, the last time I went for car inspection , it was brand new car and need the quick inspection within 10 days of registration and the technician who did the inspection put deep scratches on the paint by the door handle. Honestly very unhappy with the experience. My girlfriends family recommended this place because they've been going there for years. Well my first impression was that they're very overpriced. That having in mind that I was recommended so "they were taking care of me" Very unprofessional. First they say it would be ready on a Monday morning. I call the Monday morning and they say they'll call me later in the day. I call around 6pm and they said it'd be ready Tuesday at 11am. I call Tuesday at 11am and they say it won't be ready till 2 or 3pm. I wait till 3pm and call again. They say they need another 30 mins. I get there 30 mins after and it's still not ready. I waited another 30 mins sitting there until I finally got my car back. Of all the times they said they'd call me. I never got one call from them, just excuses! Never going back there. I thought I was treating with serious people that care about their customers. But clearly they've made me and my girlfriend waste 2 whole days desperate waiting for a call. Went in for inspection. Whole point of the thing was to make sure the car is safe. Kept my car overnight to fix the headlights and blinkers. Got it back with a passed inspection, except the blinkers don't function anymore and the internal dash lights now are so dim that they are not visible. When I walked into General Auto and was greeted warmly my the woman behind the counter I had high hopes. I soon found out that General Auto is a family affair. Maria and her husband Valentine own and operate the place and they seem to treat their regulars as if they were their neighbors. Over the last few years Valentine and his men have kept my Subaru (170,000 miles+) and Prius (56,000) on the road with routine maintenance as well as more complex issues such as front and rear shock assembly, front axle, front and rear brakes, rear differential, and head gasket. Valentine always kept the parts for me to see and patiently explained the whys and why-nots to repairs. After an accident, he supervised the work of a body shop and took responsibility for what they did. More than once one of the men rode with me so I could point out the noise I was hearing. More than once they drove me home or picked me up when I couldn't get there. My only complaint is that they can get too busy to call when the work on the car is completed. However when I brought my wife's car to get fixed for a battery problem it was by far the worst experience I've had with a mechanic. He kept the car for a couple weeks and didn't even fix the problem, on top of that he charged me $350. He recommended I get a new alternator which would run me another $500. I then took it to two other mechanics in NJ for a better quote and they both told me that the alternator was fine. I will never bring my car here again. Went in for a state inspection, wait time wasn't terrible, about 30 minutes. They were very adamant that I needed new wipers to pass the inspection. However, my wipers were replaced not even a month ago, still very new. Warning, if you're a woman, maybe go with someone who will prevent this from happening. Here's the story: Been going to this family-owned shop for about four years for my car, and my two kids' cars. About a month ago, my daughter called me from where she goes to school to report the left rear brake had to be replaced. But wait, I said, I had that caliper and rotor done at Orangeburg General less than a year ago. She got the repair done and drove it home last week for Thanksgiving. I brought the receipts into the Orangeburg, showing the replacement rotor/caliper install cost me $130 (parts and labor). I expected a run around. Instead they refunded BOTH the parts and the labor cost! Even though the part was under warranty, they said because I didn't return the car to them and make the claim when the repair was done, they couldn't get reimbursed. I explained my daughter goes to school two hours away and it was unsafe to drive the car back here. They thought about it and gave me the FULL refund. Called them to get a state inspection. They said to come over immediately as they thought they could fit me in. As soon as I arrived my car was in their garage being looked at. The whole process took less than 20 minutes which is an incredibly rare feat for anything in the automotive industry. However, I saw a guy walk in about 5 minutes after me also asking for a state inspection but they turned him away saying to come back tomorrow. I guess I got lucky. It's hard to find a good mechanic and this place isn't it. I've been here a few times and whatever the wait time the woman at the counter tells you, just double it. This woman also is very arrogant and inconsiderate to her customers (unfortunately she's the boss' wife). My first experience with them was when I brought my car in for a quick oil change. This place is the worst. I bring in my car to have alternator replaced. I bring my own alternator after manager said day before it was fine. He tells me my alternator is a defect , I let him test the alternator and it read 14.2 on the multimeter anyone that knows about cars know that reading means alternator is good. So he tells me he will charge the battery and test the battery. Long story short he tells me battery is good and he started to replace my new alternator without even letting me know. I told them to forget it, did not believe them. He definately wanted me to purchase alternator through him now. So I drive to auto part store and they test alternator and it passes they take my battery out charges it for 35 mins and it fails. They put in new battery and now car runs great. This place is not trustful and I can only imagine how many people they ripped off. Manager not very knowledgeable on cars. DO NOT GO HERE!!! And car was brought in at 8:00am and in the morning they couldn't figure why car was not starting after putting in my new alternator. Something so simple they had my car till 5:00 pm. read more

If you want to be ripped off, then this is the place to go! They charge for replacing parts when they are only fixed. As a woman who understands nothing about cars, I feel so taken advantage of. My husband was working long work hours, and I had to drag myself and the kids to the shop, thinking I was getting something done....and they just let my car sit in their lot for over 4 days. I walked my daughter to school and back each day, and they never even bothered to look at the car! Then I got a call to pick it up, and the lady told me over the phone the part that was replaced, and the amount to pay. When I went, it was working worse than it was when I took it to them (really loud vibrating). I told the man "What part was replaced?" and he said "We didn't change any parts". What?!! So I told her how could she rip me off like that?!! She then agreed to keep the car and fix it, but just dropped it in my driveway later that night, and drove off speeding like a maniac! So weird.
