Storm King is NOT such a place. Set on manicured grounds in the shadow of Storm King Mountain and just down the road from West Point, SKS is an educational community with an impressive 150 year history (see: https://sks.org). My nephew teaches here. He lives here, with his charges and family. He is an extraordinary educator and reflects the sensibilities of this place. His colleagues are just like him. SKS is exclusive in the sense of expense and rigor (hence not for everyone) but it is not your stereotypical UK snobatorium -- flush with secret handshakes and trust fund teens. It is elite, sure -- but in a good way -- like Yelp; with a Bohemian vibe. Were I in the market for a prep school that boards their students, SKS would be high on my list.

Based on her first half of the year, it has been the best investment that we could have made. Academics: Coming from public schools in New York City, we have been very pleased that the teachers have high expectations for our daughter and also offer her support and time after class to cover material that she found challenging. In addition to helping her learn the content of each class, she has received support from the Learning Center that has enabled to her to begin to develop the independence and study habits that she will need to be successful in college. Moreover, the teachers have demonstrated a true passion for pedagogy. We have been particularly impressed with her English teacher, and the way that he guides his students to engage with literature and traditional essay writing, while also developing his students' creativity and critical thinking. We also really like that she has the opportunity to take Mandarin Chinese - this is indicative of the breadth of course offerings at Storm King. Extra-curricular activities: From an extra-curricular perspective, SKS has created the environment where students are able to take risks and encourages them to find areas outside of academics that they are passionate about. While previously she did not demonstrate a passion for sports, she has already played on two sports teams in her first half of the year. She particularly enjoyed the experience on the soccer team and built great camaraderie with her teammates. Also, she has participated in the dance program, which is quite extraordinary. The recent dance recital gave the students in the dance program the opportunity to showcase all that they had been working on to the entire school community. Boarding environment and peers: As you might imagine, we were very apprehensive to send our 9th grade daughter to boarding school. However, the SKS boarding experience has exceeded our expectations. First of all, The dean, house parents and other faculty are well attuned to what is happening with the students - which puts us at ease as parents. We also really like that our daughter has the opportunity to interact with such a diverse group of students from all around the world. As a byproduct of being in this environment, she has become more intellectually curious about the world outside of NYC and the United States. She also has developed a close group of friends that have ambitious plans for their future. In summary, the individualized attention, the deep commitment to excellence and the nurturing environment of SKS makes it an ideal place for our daughter to attend high school.

We wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude for the incredible blessing your…read moreschool has been to our family. Making the decision to leave public school and enroll Patrick in a private school was not one we took lightly. We prayed for guidance, wisdom, and direction, trusting that God would lead us where Patrick was meant to be. Looking back now, we can clearly see His hand in every step that brought us to Ascend Academy From the moment we walked through your doors, we felt something different. The welcoming atmosphere, the dedication of the staff, the strong values, and the genuine care shown to each student immediately stood out. It didn't take long for us to realize that this was exactly where he was supposed to be. We have been continually impressed by the quality of the academic program, the commitment of the teachers, and the way every staff member pours into the lives of the students. Ascend academy is not simply a place of learning--it is a community where children are encouraged to grow academically, emotionally, spiritually, and personally. The transformation we have seen in Patrick has been remarkable. He is excited to learn, eager to go to school each day, and has developed a confidence and joy that has touched our hearts. Most importantly, he knows he is loved, valued, and supported. As parents, there is no greater gift than knowing your child is safe, cared for, and surrounded by people who genuinely want to see him succeed. We are especially grateful for the Christ-centered environment that continually points children toward God's love and truth. In a world that often feels uncertain, it is comforting to know that he is being nurtured in a place where faith, character, kindness, and excellence are woven into everyday life. Thank you for your dedication, your hard work, and your unwavering commitment to your students and families. We know that what you do requires countless hours, tremendous sacrifice, and a servant's heart. Please know that your efforts do not go unnoticed. God truly led our family to your school, and we feel incredibly blessed to be part of this community. Thank you for welcoming us with open arms and for making such a profound difference in Patricks life. Thank you!

As I stated below, i was an older student with little experience. Previous part of review left on Jan 2021: I'm a current older student. As with most typical bronx/city people, we never bothered to learn how to drive unless it was necessary lol. The point is, that i've been taking lessons since September 2020 & everyone has been great. All 3 instructors I've been learning under have been very nice. The owner is a good guy, him and his staff are doing the best they can considering the circumstances with COVID-19 this year so people need to cut them some slack. They teach and go over everything including the basic, day to day stuff you as a new driver completely gloss over; pulling into parking lots, filling up at the station, etc. Thumbs up from this bronx girl who is a 1st time driver at 40.

I had a very concerning experience involving Daytona Driving School that demonstrated a complete…read moredisregard for basic roadway safety. While exiting a residential community, I was forced to drive into the lane designated for oncoming traffic because a Daytona Driving School instructor had parked directly in front of the gated exit lane. This was not an emergency situation--the vehicle was simply stopped for an extended period of time and blocking outbound traffic. As a result, multiple vehicles were forced to maneuver around the driving school car and enter the opposing traffic lane in order to exit the community. This created an unnecessary and dangerous situation that could easily have resulted in an accident as multiple cars were also trying to enter the gated community at the same time. I personally spoke with the instructor, who stated that he was waiting for a student. Despite being informed that he was creating a safety hazard and obstructing traffic, he refused to move the vehicle. I then contacted Daytona Driving School to report the issue. The person who answered acknowledged that there was only one instructor working in the area and stated they would "take a look into it." For a company whose business is teaching safe driving practices, blocking an active exit lane and forcing motorists into opposing traffic is unacceptable. The instructor's refusal to move the vehicle after the hazard was brought to his attention makes the situation even more troubling. Based on this experience, I have serious concerns about the school's commitment to safety and professionalism. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere for driving instruction.

Leaving here after my sophomore year remains my greatest regret in life. However, I should point out that the school was completely different when I was there as compared to the present time. In 1978 we had over 700 cadets and the school was thriving with spirit. I've visited on several occasions over the past 10 years, with my most recent visit occurring on 8/21/21. With each visit, I observe the school falling further into squalor. Based on my 8/21/21 visit, it doesn't even appear that the school is open. (No one was there - when I was there, I reported for football pre-season camp in mid-August). This school was once a wonderful "tradition." During my time as a cadet, you could "feel" the history. I absolutely loved my time here, and again, leaving remains a tremendous regret. As for the Donald Trump comments. As much as I dislike him as a person, his attendance has no bearing on the school. If anything, as much as he talks about the place, and his supposedly being a multi-millionaire, you'd think that perhaps he would donate. (Perhaps he has). As for the no adult supervision comment(s), that was one of the best things about the school during my time. The cadets ran the show back in my day. This built character and responsibility. The adults stood in the background and allowed us to grow into true leaders. NYMA: I hope you have a plan to turn things around, if that is financially possible. I'd be more than happy to volunteer my time toward rebuilding this once great academy.

I attended a Business Expo this weekend at the Monroe Woodbury High School. I hadn't been there…read moresince my son graduated there in 200? I entered the building with mixed emotions. The school was built in the mid 2000's as a response to the burgeoning student population at the time. Only to have 20 odd, more classrooms added two years later... Graduating classes of 550+ are commonplace, it's no small place. Though it has beautiful views of the mountains and malls. In the 1980's & 90's, people were moving to Monroe Woodbury as if lemmings were scurrying to the sea. The school is a massive sprawling structure built with endlessly maze-like hallways and the number of classrooms, office & labs boggle the mind. A parent, unaccustomed to this challenge would be doomed to go missing for weeks on end in this faceless place, populated by noncommittal clerks and "administrators". I move cautiously, remembering landmarks of my children's high school experiences (student riots, peer confrontations and benign sporting events). I suppose for a school it's bright and cheery and I then think how it's populated by coaches and drivers ed teachers. The infinite hallways finally bring me to my destination, a cafeteria doubling as my expo... Happy Man... Happy, Happy Man
