I called their hotline unsure if anyone would understand my situation or take me seriously. They immediately understood what I was going through, and provided me with relevant resources. I am amazed that we have such a great resource here in town.
If you need an advocate to attend a meeting with you, they can arrange for that. If you need a support group, they have those. They can even set you up with "companion calls" to get you through the time between support group sessions. There are snacks provided, with little notes of encouragement provided by UNC students (a sorority I think). If you need individual counseling, they have that too. If transportation is an issue, they can arrange that for you while protecting your anonymity. All of this, it's not magic and doesn't always run perfectly, but thank G-d they are here. I don't know how they do it, but somehow they do.
The location is on a bus line and not too far from UNC campus, and not overly visible from the street (i.e., one does not feel overexposed going in). The facilities are a little old, but work just fine.
I wanted to leave this review to encourage people who are on the fence to reach out, as terrifying or uncertain as it may feel. It can be really scary to call or walk into a place called a "rape crisis center." I'm glad that I did. read more
