It's peculiar for a…read moreNorth Shore family to willingly travel so far for a bite to eat, but that's a reflection on how good the food is here. Heck, when I was little we saw former prime-minister David Lange eating here and my dad had a chat to him - I think that tells you everything you need to know of the awesomeness that is Vietnam Cafe. Now take everything I say with one qualifier - this place is a hole. It's in a dingy old building which looks in dire need of a clean and a paintjob. It doesn't have any discernible decor apart from a mirror on the back wall. Parking's a bit of a bitch. The toilets should be avoided at all costs. But man, all that is totally outweighed by the standard of the food which was and still is the best of any Vietnamese restaurant I've visited in Auckland. The pho is always perfectly done, the pork spare ribs are tasty, and haiananese chicken is a favourite dinner of mine. If you like good honest Vietnamese cuisine, you won't find many better than this if you can stomach the lack of decor. The presence of a Hansan in my neighbourhood as well as local night markets have meant my visits here aren't as frequent as they used to be, but when I do you know you're in for the best.

The food was delish, and well priced. I'm still adjusting my taste buds to Kiwi standards but I would go back to this place. Also there is a big Asian super market across the street which is a big perk.

It's a fairly new establishment in the area, but it's become a regular hangout for a few beers and very good food. You definitely feel the '80's vibe when you're there, and its always nice to see a little appreciation for that era. Their pizzas are delicious, particularly 'Rangi's Hangi' and 'Larry the Lamb'. They do a very nice caesar salad and my favourite main has to be the crispy chicken burger with aioli and melted brie- one of the best restaurant burgers I've had. They've got a good range of ciders and do a few cocktails to quench your thirst. They also serve most of their drinks in 600mL milk bottles, which is a really cool touch. I'd have to say that Nineteen Eighty One is best known for their fortnightly Wednesday quiz nights. The place gets packed and its always a good laugh- there's even a prize for the team that comes second to last.

I really enjoyed the stuffed chicken too. The decor brought back lots of memories.

We discovered it through the Auckland entertainment book for 2017. The cafe has 2 entrances is - one beside the deck and one along further by the other shops. We walked in to a lovely setup with tables, chairs and a very clean white floor. The area is well taken care of and also offers outside seating (and inside outside) for those who prefer the fresh air. Quiet music is played from the radio. Now onto the food... the coffee was EXQUISITE! I love a good mocha and mine was the perfect balance of chocolate and coffee. Mum had a latte, which she loved also. As for the meals, my eyes went straight to the blueberry pancakes (which come with cream, seasonal fruit, bacon and maple syrup). Mum had the trattoria grill (eggs, bacon, sourdough bread, spinach, mushrooms, potato balls, Italian sausage and roasted tomato). The girls that ran it were lovely too. Highly recommended!

Have noticed that it doesn't appear to be as patronised as it used to be so wonder why. Would definitely give it another go. Could really do with some more mediterranean flavours in South Auckland.

The temple structure and design is massive and simply beautiful, it really looks like it just doesn't belong where it is. When I first saw this place under construction, I was really shocked at the sheer size of it. The architecture of the finished building is a very traditional design and reminds me so much of being in Japan. Perhaps this is why I enjoy visiting this temple, to get my nostalgic fix. It's a little bit of the orient in NZ. Anyway, the inside is just as spectacular as the exterior and has enormous space. It's so quiet and peaceful, with monks walking around and everything! It's free to enter the building, and I strongly suggest that you check it out at least once. They have a pretty cool gift store near the entrance too.

For all its superficial beauty and splendour, I found the people who run it to be very focused on commercialism. They are wonderful at it by far, but it's not something I would expect from humble, Buddhist monks. I like that they reach out to the community, but the commercialism took away from their religious aspect. Still, it's a nice place for a spot of tea.
