The staff are…read moreconsistently friendly and welcoming, the crowd is respectful, and the location and hours are very convenient. However, I can't give more than two stars unless management seriously improves equipment maintenance. Several machines have had "Out of Service" stickers on them for at least six months, with no visible progress on repairs. In some cases there are only one or two of those machines in the entire gym, so when one is broken for months, it becomes very inconvenient for members who rely on that equipment. On top of that, some of the existing equipment is clearly aging (frayed cables, worn components, etc.). What makes this more frustrating is that the gym offers a premium membership tier that includes access to the hydro/water massage bed, but that has also been out of service for a long time. Even more concerning, the water fountain and bathroom have both been out of service multiple times. That's a basic facility issue. Members need access to drinking water and restrooms during workouts. Meanwhile, the gym sells bottled water at the counter, which feels especially frustrating when the fountain isn't working. On a few occasions they even had to bring in a porta-potty outside the gym, which says a lot about the state of the building facility. Again, I genuinely want to rate this gym higher because the staff and community are great. If management commits to properly repairing and maintaining the equipment and facilities, I would absolutely be happy to update this review and increase the rating.

I am not much of a using apartment-gym-kinda person but this one changed my mind. It is so beautiful. There are two parts to it. First floor has a small room for strength training and includes a good amount of "must-haves" equipment's. Second floor has treadmills, stair master, elliptical, and cycling machines. Everytime I go here, its always clean and smells good. There is also a big room behind the cardio equipment where Pilates, Yoga and dance classes are held or could be held. I use this room for stretching and warm-ups. What makes me motivated to go here and workout almost everyday is the view when I am running on treadmill. There is a poll outside and beautiful palm trees. This makes me feel like I'm on a beach or something. Hahahahaa. Love it. When you are done working out, you can go take a dip in the pool and swim. Also, there is a shower room and restrooms on the first floor. Its usually busiest in the morning 7-8am to 11am and at evenings 4-5pm onwards. Lunch times are usually less hectic almost close to none. If you stay at Beach Cove apartments, then definitely check it out. It's worth working out here for free than paying at outside fitness center.

We left Crunch after 17 years (well, technically it was Gold's before but you get the point) because I had a female stalker and Crunch wouldn't help me (even with restraining orders). I was wildly unimpressed with their non-assistance. We went to Equinox bc it was supposed to be nicer and it was only a 1 mile walk from our house - fantastic. While it looked nicer, it was not nicer. It's old, outdated and limited. It's stupid expensive. And the hours really, really suck. So after a year, we left Equinox and we were wavering on going back to the Bay Club or joining the Y. Our kids really wanted to work out and the Y was a great option for a family plan. So we joined for them. While testing it out and thinking we might bounce out to the Bay Club, we ended up loving it. They recently upgraded all the equipment to smart equipment and I'm diggin it! I haven't seen these machines since I was at an upscale gym in Houston a couple years ago! I love the price ($185 for all 6 of us, plus it as daycare vs $230/mo at equinox per person and no kids are welcome) I love the normalness of the Y too. I may make great income, but I don't want to be with the stiffs. I want to be where my roots are.

The one or two people that have the cans to enforce the rules are not around often enough. When they try and enforce the 'no telephone calls' members ignore or even yell at the staff with no retaliatory actions against the members. Several members lack any form of manners or common courtesy. They see no problem sitting around on the machines having 30 minute social visits followed by 10 more minutes of them, still on the machine, but staring at their phones (Lady Garlic!). Parents apparently send their teenagers here for free babysitting. Teens do exactly what they do at home: stare at their phones. And they take pictures, also prohibited. Other review comments about the lazy grumpy front desk staff are true as well but not across the board. Furthermore, there are two younger staff members that will initiate a long conversation with members who are on the machines. This sets a bad example. This is an AI generated picture but this is absolutely what you will see here all the time.

The instructors are very friendly and encouraging and will walk you through each set of exercises. They give you arm bands to monitor your heart rate and track your performance (brought out the competitive side of me). The exercises weren't very challenging for me, however, but they seem to be a good fit for someone who doesn't know how to weight lift. You buy a subscription and can drop into any available class.

#SCAMMY MEMBERSHIP PRACTICES & INHUMANE POLICIES…read more I joined Orangetheory last month and paid $100 for the unlimited plan. During sign-up, the front desk staff just wanted me to sign up and had me sign the contracts (which most people understandably don't have time to read on the spot) and told me I could "cancel anytime--don't worry." When I was rethinking coz it was 200$ after a month. Him saying you can cancel anytime gave me some kinda assurance that I will kinda see how I like or be and then think if it's not for me. Fast forward a month--I only attended two classes till now. When I called to cancel, I was told I still owe the upcoming $200 monthly fee due to a 30-day notice policy that was never mentioned during sign-up. If I had known that, I would've canceled the very next day after my free class. But of course, the staff conveniently left that out. What's worse? They told me I could downgrade my membership one day before billing to avoid the charge, but couldn't cancel. So basically, they can take your money, just not stop the payments. How convenient for them. This place is a trap is a trap, expensive af for no good reason honestly. They hide behind policies they don't explain and have zero empathy or flexibility. I understand business is business, but this feels deceptive, greedy, and cold. Do better, Orangetheory, Foster city. Ps~ Front desk lady was trying to help, however, since the manager was available at the time of call, he/she was not trying to help and gave me the policy bs. The problem is in management and the managers.

Let me count the ways how much I miss and love Equinox…read more Yes, I know--it's a high-end gym. But you truly get what you pay for. I was a member of this location for over a decade, and since moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, I can honestly say there is nothing quite like it. The nearest one to me now is in Atlanta, and I still miss the San Mateo club regularly. This location has everything you could possibly want in a fitness facility--and then some. The Fitness Floor Downstairs is a beautifully air-conditioned workout space designed for people who are serious about exercising. No distractions, no crowds hovering by the windows--just a clean, focused environment. You'll find: * Full weight training equipment * Recumbent bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills * Dedicated spin, Pilates, TRX, and group fitness studios * A large open stretching area with foam rollers * Cold, filtered water stations throughout * Staff available for spotting if you're training solo It's efficient, professional, and thoughtfully designed. Locker Rooms & Amenities The locker rooms feel more like a boutique hotel than a gym. They are consistently spotless and fully stocked with: * Plush towel service * Spacious showers with teak benches * Steam rooms infused with eucalyptus * Complimentary razors, Q-tips, and personal care items * Premium Kiehl's products It's luxurious, yes--but also incredibly practical. You can comfortably get ready for work, dinner, or travel without feeling rushed. The Rooftop Pool One of the standout features is the heated rooftop pool. It has multiple lap lanes, cabanas, and water aerobics equipment, and it truly feels like a mini country club in the middle of downtown San Mateo. The pool is heated year-round, which means you can swim in any season--something you quickly get spoiled by. They even provide sunscreen from Supergoop!, along with full towel service. It's those little details that make the experience feel elevated. Classes, Spa & Services The class offerings are extensive and easy to manage through the app. Signing in is seamless--just scan your phone and go. Highlights include: * Yoga in a beautiful bamboo studio with HEPA filtration and ceiling fans * Pilates (available as private, duo, or small-group sessions) * A full-service spa on the upper level * A juice bar and retail shop featuring premium fitness apparel Everything feels intentional, polished, and well-maintained. Location & Convenience The club is located right in the heart of downtown San Mateo, making it incredibly walkable. There are restaurants, grocery stores, and cafés nearby, including one of my favorite bakeries and specialty markets. Parking is also surprisingly easy for a downtown location: * Two-hour validation * Surface lot, garage, and rooftop parking options That convenience makes a big difference in daily use. Value & Membership Yes, membership can be expensive. However, many employers offer corporate discounts, which can make the cost more manageable. In my case, the value absolutely justified the price because I used the facility regularly and took advantage of the amenities. Even when I relocated, canceling my membership was straightforward and professional--no pressure, no hassle. Bottom Line Equinox San Mateo set the standard for what a fitness club should be: clean, thoughtfully designed, service-oriented, and genuinely enjoyable to use. If I ever move to another city with an Equinox, I will join again without hesitation. Because at the end of the day-- life is short, and you should live well.

Recently they went above and beyond. I had an injury early last year and couldn't work out. I kept telling myself that I'll be back Equinox next month. After six months I realized it would be a while till I could come back and wished I had put my membership on hold as I had paid dues for about six months and not used the club. I called the club and spoke to Ethan, the manager, and explained I wanted to put my membership on hold till I could come back. He took a look at my account and saw that I hadn't been at the club in six months and, after getting a doctors letter, gave SIX MONTHS CREDIT. I was flabbergasted. Who does nice things like this any more. I started in early January and won't have to pay dues until July. Ethan, Will and all the other staff are amazing as are the members I have met there. 2026 is off to a great start!!!
