I'm not all that keen on going to a gym. Not only do I not feel like being another drone running…read moreaway on a treadmill but I also feel I'm not getting a very personal service and then there's the fear that you'll be spotted in your sweats by someone at work or dread or of dreads, someone you fancy. For this reason, a couple of my friends and I signed up for a 6 week boxcercise course with Matt at Mint. The groups are kept really small so you get the attention you would from a personal trainer without the extortionate price tag. We're addicted already! It's so much fun, I recommend it to anyone. 6 weeks is £60 but if you want 1 to 1 personal training you're looking at £30-45 per hour.

I had been reading 'Body by Science' by Dr Doug McGuff and on the off chance typed on 'HIT (High…read moreintensity training in Brighton) and found Mint fitness immediately. I couldn't believe my luck that such an enlightened exercise protocol was being offered on my doorstep. I've weight trained for 23 years-always assuming that the "correct" exercise dosage should be 3 times a week at least (or as much as possible!). I have been training since June at Mint fitness once a week for not more than 20 minutes and the results are amazing. Not only do I burn off more fat but I am stronger and leaner than ever (at 45). This is such a worthwhile investment as the benefits of this kind of training include improved insulin sensitivity, better fat burning, stronger muscles and (according to new research) better cardio vascular health (without the need for hours on the treadmill) my stamina has also greatly improved. I think everyone should train in this way, men to maintain testosterone levels and keep trim, women to off minimise excess fat and improve posture and bone density. The trainers Andy and Matt are enthusiastic and incredibly encouraging and the thought of training the way I used to now seems laughable. Oh and my sleep has also benefitted. Looking forward to getting fitter as I get older. Mark Tyrrell Brighton

I present: my attempt to remain in good health! I've been going to Otium for about 2 to 3 months…read morenow, and as gyms go, it is perfectly fine, but nothing to write home about. The only reason I chose this over any other was closeness to home and ease of access; beyond that, it is comparable to any other gym, if a little smaller. Otium is the in-house gym for the Thistle Hotel: as such, it is kept in excellent condition. Although it is generally quite small, with a lot of machines crammed in, they all work and are kept in good nick. That being said, I've stopped going at peak times (lunchtimes, after 5) because you often don't get to use the machines you want, or have to wait for a little while. Apart from all of the machinery, Otium has a good selection of weights, gym balls and other paraphenalia: anything the gym novice may need. Not being that knowledgeable about gym machinery, I don't know if they have anything for the true enthusiast; although judging by the general size of the gym, I'd doubt it. That being said, the pool and sauna section next door is excellent: well looked after, pleasantly designed, and more than large enough for the gym itself. It never seems that busy either... a nice alternative to the always busy pools around town. So, a generally nice gym, well-looked after and run, if a little small. It's about the same price as any other gym; it was slightly cheaper when I joined than the other Brighton gym behemoths, but I reckon that was probably a special offer. I'd recommend it for locals, but not worth going out of your way for.

Admittedly, it's not the biggest gym in the world, but it has plenty of equipment to get a great workout including all the usual cardiac machines, weights machines, free weights (this area is very lady friendly, unlike other gyms I have experienced in the past), and TRX. They also have limited membership so the gym is never really crowded and I've certainly never had to wait for any of the machines. That said, my gym inductions weren't that successful, and for this Wickwoods loses a star. The first induction I had was good but the instructor was leaving the next day, and forgot to write down the program she had developed for me. The second time, the girl was incredibly moody as she had been booked by her colleague and didn't really have time. One very quick, abrupt tour of the gym later I had a program written down but a slightly sour taste in my mouth from the way I was treated. It's a shame as everyone else I have come across at the club has been really pleasant. As well as the gym, they have a studio room where they run numerous classes. The classes run by the gym instructors are better in my experience, the others can be a little 80's in style!! There is a beautiful pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room area that is just perfect to use after a hard workout in the gym. They also have inside and outside tennis courts, tennis coaching and tournaments - I may pick up my tennis racket again when the weather cheers up! I am yet to try the restaurant, although the carvery looks and smells fantastic on a Sunday - book in advance though, they never have room for us when we turn up after the gym. The bar area is a great place to stop for a coffee or something stronger - you have earned it by this stage of course! There are also treatment rooms which I plan to use in the very near future - there has to be some reward for all this hard work!
