Opperman Hall was the host location for a percussion ensemble event. Opperman Hall is a medium sized music venue with ample floor seating and balconies. The acoustics carried well throughout the performance. Not knowing exactly what to expect from a percussion ensemble, I was surprised to be so entertained by a myriad of xylophones, chimes, bells, drums, etc. The performance was enchanting, rhythmic and awe inspiring. I had the distinct pleasure of sharing this experience with fellow Yelper Angela F who started a talk thread about the event. They even provided everyone with FREE CDs!!! A win-win because the percussion ensemble performance itself was FREE too!!! So many thanks to the FSU music program and to Angela F who initiated an informative talk thread introducing this to the Yelp-o-sphere! On a last note parking can be difficult to find and a brisk walk from an off premise parking location my be necessary.

Who knew there was life this side of the state?…read more Passed by the Monticello Opera House last weekend. Got to see their murder mystery show, The Altos Hit Broadway. Apparently the Monticello Opera House hosts various shows throughout the season, including a murder mystery show each year. I just happened to catch the last showing of it. Typically these shows include dinner as well, so it's essentially dinner theater. Don't ask me about price as I was invited, but the dinner included bread, salad, a chicken with pasta dinner, and a dessert (this time being a sponge cake). While the food certainly wasn't gourmet, it was better than expected. I recommend not eating the entire dinner though if you're like me with a tiny stomach. You'll be asking to get rolled out of there. Note, too, that they have a bar on site for drinks. These you purchase separately. Parking around the area is ample and free. This little town doesn't seem have much going for it except this majestic-looking opera house, which I found out has two floors and has been around forever and a day. They seem to host a variety of events, and well, I definitely want to go back. The Playbill I received had next season's showings and there's one there that intrigues me about Anne Frank. Hmm...

Attended a play at this jewel of a place for the first time since the pandemic. Though the past…read moreplays I attended have been staged in the banquet hall (with a delicious catered dinner and an open bar), sitting in the auditorium was really nice. The building is old but precious, with original wood throughout. Though I had an enjoyable time, the only drawback was the sound. I am not sure of the types of microphones, etc., used. I heard most of the actors clearly, but a couple of the actors' voices were a bit muffled throughout the play. All in all, I am looking forward to attending more plays. And if/when I feel comfortable again being seated closely with other patrons at the same table, in a limited space while sharing a common meal, I will definitely do so - just not now. Though the auditorium is on the second floor and there are two flights of stairs, there is also an elevator. Of note, for those who love quaint settings for performances, consider donating to MOH to help maintain the ambiance and structural features.
