After asking around, different people tried to get me to join their school, but when I checked them out, they appeared very stereotypical, macho-oriented, which turned me off. When I found out about this RCJ Machado location, I got excited. I came in and Hugo, the office manager, was really friendly and helpful. I came back a couple of days later with my gi and tried out a class. I signed up right after the class. I previously trained with another Machado black belt, this place maintains the same high quality teaching and training as any other school run by a Machado black belt. Marcos is a great instructor who gives everyone equal amount of time. Unlike other places were instructors have favorite students, Marcos makes sure that he works with everyone, often going around doing drills individually with everyone in class to make sure that we all get it. But the instruction goes beyond Marcos and Hugo, as advanced students are helpful in working with new students as well. There are no egos here and everyone is willing to work with one another. This is simply a great place for anyone that is serious about training in jiu jitsu at a high level.

They made me feel welcomed even though I don't know what I was doing. The students did not judge me as a newbie. Was expecting to be a sacrificial lamb due to being the new one. That didn't happen. There were students from every group. Kids to MMA fighters. Both female and male. All races were represented in the gym. Doesn't matter if the student was out of shape as a beginner. Shyness and meekness can be overcome over time. Everyone was accepted. The coaches have created a community, not just a gym class. As helpful as everyone was, everything had to be earned. They were willing to teach but their competitiveness did not allow them to lose. I loss 100% of my committed spars. Only way is to improve to earn my win.

The schedule is varied so I can fit in trainings and and open mats for both types of BJJ. The men are extremely kind and helpful at coed classes as well as open mats. I never feel in jeopardy but get a good workout while feeling safe and respected. I also enjoy the classes with women of various ages. We have fun but get great training. Very supportive for competition training as well as for hobbyists.
