We love training here! Successful, enthusiastic, and accomplished coaches. Two talented and highly decorated female black belts with fantastic competition pedigrees. Two more accomplished male black belts. Many advanced level coaches as well, plenty of adult training partners, and a small army of Genesis kids! Very reasonable pricing, no contracts, tons of class times, and great people. All levels, from beginners to black belts, train here. The environment is very welcoming. Competition is encouraged but not required, and there are many very successful competitors here in different age ranges, weight classes, and belt levels. Focusing on the kid's side for this review: Started about 3 years ago with my 4 year old daughter. We came for a trial class and enjoyed it, so decided to keep training. Another big factor was the female ownership and strong female membership. I wanted my daughter to have those examples to look up to. We have never done any martial arts or wrestling before, so I wasn't sure how either of us would fair. My daughter loves her coaches and they really do a great job of keeping things fun yet disciplined and engaging. They all genuinely care about their students. They make sure everyone is safe and working together in a controlled way. Coach Jen and Coach Kat started her off with Wee Warriors and the basic skills. She has been able to move up and promote into the more advanced classes with Coach Kari and Coach Eli. She also loves helping with the younger kids whenever she can with Coach (and owner) Karen, Coach Eli, or Coach Jen. It's nice that all of the coaches generally work together and help eachother, and there are many other coaches that I am sure I am neglecting to mention who have contributed to my daughter's progress. The lessons are consistent no matter who is leading the class, and generally build on the previous lessons or review skills already taught. Plenty of private and small group lessons available as well for extra training if desired. The more my daughter participates and engages with her coaches, friends, training partners, and other competitors, the more she enjoys being at Genesis Jiu Jitsu. My daughter started at Genesis at the end of the school year and she loves it. The child who never held an interest in anything longer than a weekwants to go everyday. The environment there is awesome; not only are the coaches great with the kids, but the kids are supportive of one another. They're even mini coaches to the newbies. This place rocks!! Wow I don't have enough good things to say about this ju jitsu gym. The instructors are so kind and diligent and are honestly true bad asses! I love the way they teach my child. They are helping kids gains life skills and confidence with every class. They feel so family oriented and take time to get to know the kids and the families! They make sure the girls feel just as welcome as the boys. They have pink ghees for the girls and I can see they put a lot of thought into all aspects of their business. There are a lot of kids who attend the classes but they work with each group one on one and coach them through each move and different scenarios. They also teach the kids the proper way to handle a confrontation using their fighting skills as a 2nd resort not the first! It has taken me this long to write a review because the last 2 1/2 years I've been in shock and awe over Coach Karen Kovach and Genesis gym. Coach Karen Kovach has a unique gift of not only the art of Jiu Jitsu but how to teach others in their own unique ways. My husband and I had, reservations about taking our kids to train somewhere, and our desire to be part of a studio that was family friendly! She encouraged us to visit the studio and only do as much as we were comfortable with. Whether that was observing, participating or doing the 7 day trial. We brought our son (now 9) and daughter (now 8) here for the 7 day trial, 2 1/2 years ago, and was immediately impressed with the family friendly atmosphere at Genisis. Professor Karen Kovach quickly introduced herself and was very friendly, encouraging and passionate about BJJ. The students and coaches went out of their way to talk to our kids and make them feel welcome. One of the criteria we judged a school on was making sure it was a safe environment for our children. After a month of training under Professor Karen Kovach and her talented team of coaches, and after observing the kids program, We knew Genesis was going to be a place we could settle in as a family, and train together for years to come. You often read reviews about 'no egos' and 'family friendly' but this was the first studio I've seen that had those qualities day to day. Our children have been part of the kids program for 2 1/2 years and it is still something they look forward to. Each of them have goals they've set for themselves. They've been pushed and encouraged to work toward those goals and seeing them reach them is priceless as a parent. Jiu Jitsu isn't something we have to drag them to or something they dread attending... instead, its something they delight in. They beg us to go to class, sign up for every tournament we can afford to send them to, and even practice at home with each other for hours a week! They've made friends with other students, made significant gains athletically and technically, and most of all...they've have fun doing it. Professor Karen has been fundamental in their journey beyond their first day as a white belt when they walked into Genisis. She's been patient, thought provoking, and has been willing to walk down different paths on their journey to help each of her students as they each seek to find their own way. Watching her competitions, you see that the Jiu Jitsu she teaches is extremely effective and she is quite skilled at imparting her knowledge to her students. Her unique way of teaching children is unparalelled and rivaled in the Jiu Jitsu community! Their is none better! She's not dogmatic about the way we learn and encourages everyone to take hold of Jiu Jitsu and make it their own. Its also encouraging to see that she herself is still a student of the game and brings passion and excitement to the mats. She leads by example. Her ability to teach people of all ages and backgrounds is very impressive. Especially with children, her background of being an educator in the local area, and specializing in early childhood development, makes her shine, in the way she is able to coach children. The other coaches are also extremely dedicated and committed to the learning of the students. I hope you will at the very least visit the school if you are looking to find a place to train. You won't be sorry. I could write so much more about how strongly we feel toward Genisis but the biggest endorsement we can offer is that our family has been here for over two years now and doesn't plan on going anywhere else. The coaches here are amazing! My daughter has been training here for 2 and a half years and she has grown so much. The coaches work with every kid at the own levels and teach them discipline and the art of jui-jitsu. Kids are competing and winning medals as young as 5 years of age.
