The change in the way the shelter is ran has drastically changed in the last few years due to new management. they have enrichment for each animal that's in their care. Yes they are a kill shelter if due to aggression or medically compromised that a rescue partners can't take on. They have made drastic measures to have people stop dumping their animals. Its not just on the county shelter to house the strays. Its on the owners of the property where they are located. Stop making it someone else financial burden. Take ownership. If I had the chance to walk into this facility (I was told I couldn't visit)- this review would be much worse. They euthanized a beautiful gentle loving puppy. My neighbors and I have video of him playing with a toddler, sharing his food with other dogs when starving, hugging me and letting strangers bathe him. He couldn't sleep if someone wasn't touching him. Yet even though I emailed constantly saying we had a family for him- yOu decided to kill him. If you're going to work this way at least be honest. Where do I begin? I've called time after time to set up an appointment and either no one answers or there is NOTHING available. Even though the website shows the variety of their available dogs. Anyways fast forward a few weeks, my husband and I are beyond annoyed, so we finally just show up. There was probably one nice lady out of the whole place, and she actually let us see the dogs and choose one. We were able to adopt our beauty and take him home, yes, but the process was not exciting whatsoever. The staff was incredibly rude and were trying to rush us out of there? Even though we were trying to take a pup off of their hands ‍. My husband and I remained adamant though and we were able to adopt him. All I can say is this place is very lame. The staff is incredibly rude except for the nice lady up front, you know who you are. Good luck adopting from this place! Fortunately there are awesome puppies there waiting to get adopted, just don't let the staff bum you out!!! read more

This shelter is a kill shelter there was a cat that was pretty old that I planned on adopting which just disappeared and when I asked they said they weren't sure if he was adopted sure enough I went back he was gone. Not to mention when we asked if they were a kill shelter they admitted it immediately. The staff there is insanely rude and disrespectful. I don't recommend this place at all. read more

It is my sincere pleasure to give OCAS as much props as I can. I have to take my time in writing this so I can paint the proper scenario. We live in Jville and our hearts were broken as this beautiful dog kept coming around and because my partner is scared of dogs and the fact that we have 6 cats I would have to routinely 'shoo' him away. The thought being that like so many other 'transient' dogs he lived nearby. I will state that the attitude in our neighborhood is very hands off and more or less apathetic toward the animal population. I recently had the absolute heart rending task of scraping a sweet kitten off the developments road and burying him/her in our backyard with too many tears to count. I wish everyone would have empathy but they don't. To paint a clearer picture there has also been 5 happy dogs running amok in the yard. They all had sweet personalities and just wanted to play. I have no fear generally of dogs and these were so beautiful and innocent that I many times picked up the littlest baby pomeranian and took him home as I found out where that was. The dogs had no trouble digging themselves out repeatedly and through no fault of their own ended up here. That activity has since abated. The one thing that really totally upset me was seeing this beautiful collie/retriever caught in a storm late at night soaked and searching for some kind of shelter of which I would have found a way to give him if I could. I would have happily opened up the garage but he was understandably confused as to where he would be welcome and safe. Our next door neighbors shooed him away as well so the next am I called Onslow County Animal Services and they showed up very quickly. A very sweet happy man popped out of the truck we spoke and we found the dog who we later found out was ' Lucky.' This very kind Officer's name is Offcr Mechaet. Working together we got Lucky to come closer and soon she was completely submissive showed her belly, had said belly rubbed and when offered water and a giant can of food she happily bound into the van and had a huge friendly 'smile' as did we. I asked the officer as we said goodbye if he was Hawaiian. I surf so it kind of felt right to ask. He replied yes and it just underlined for me that warm spirit that Hawaiian's have it's hard to describe but I guess the word that comes to mind is love. This officer is a credit to humanity and as a representative of the affect that caring can accomplish a much needed 'delicate force' for animals and by extension people. To end while there is so much crap in the world today every once in a while someone comes into your life that you can revere and feel good about. I am so glad that we called. Due to the method that OCAS uses Lucky was returned to their rightful owner and they should feel damn lucky to get her back. I say this because truthfully people if they are going to have animals just have to be more aware and most of all caring. Animals are so loving and trusting and have no voice. I am happy to say I am their voice. MAJOR PROPS TO THESE GUYS. Much like a good mechanic or doctor I now have found animal advocates I trust. And that is a great feeling. If I could give a negative 50 I would. I realize we live in a town where there is an enormous amount of homeless animals. But I have lived here 49 years and the shelter is still a kill shelter, over run with baby kittens and dogs and still not enough vouchers to have these pets spayed or neutered. It seems to me more money toward vouchers would reduce the number of babies that are killed every Friday. Unless the day has changed since I worked fir the city the animal control would meet the vet on friday to do their weekly put down. there are not enough animal control on the road to service this county. I wish the county would take more initiative to look into the shabby manor these poor animals are put thru and try to help instead of building some things, like Burton park. Just imagine how the county could have put that money to use to help animal services instead of buying mostly unused land. I see why people don't have their animals fixed. It can be almost 350.00 to spay or neuter 1 animal and a lot if people don't have that. Let's get some vouchers or lower cost clinics here in Jacksonville. And some more animal control officers that when you have a loose feral animal coming into your house thru the doggy door they actually help rather than tell you to lock your animal in the house so they cant go out to the bathroom or I'm not doing anything to help. Well thanks. I went out and paid 200.00 for an automatic doggy door opener that only lets my pets in and out and not the freaks. Thanks for the assist animal control. I handled it. Now you can move on to give out more useless assistance. read more

This shelter is great! They are all very friendly and hard working staff and volunteers. Often times they are short staffed but that is because of funding not because they do not want to provide excellent customer service. They always have tons of animals including cats, dogs, and more sometimes. There are many foster homes so all of the animals that they have are not all held at the shelter but can be seen on their website and you can always set up a meet and greet. The best way to get help is to message them on Facebook or to go down and see them in person. As with any business, be patient because they all try their best to help people and take care of all the animals that other people dumb. read more

I have to brag about this place! The first time I went in, I was completely appalled at how horrible it was being run. I was greeted upon entering, by worms coming out of a cat's butt, but not a human working there. Then told by a volunteer that I was not allowed into the dog kennel area, and that I must look at the dogs available on a computer before deciding if I wanted to meet him/her! I decided to give this shelter another chance today, and I have hope that it can and will be a much better place for the animals who live here! My family was able to walk through the dog kennels and walked a couple of dogs, and my husband and I fell for a gorgeous cat. The only thing is the off-putting smell as soon as you enter the shelter, then again as entering the dog kennel area. The staff is super helpful and friendly and very informative. I understand that they are hoping to get better ventilated in the near future, too, so I'm pleased with the positive changes they've made and the ones they plan to make as well.
