And just because you've left your homeland doesn't mean that you haven't forgotten your old rivalries. The traffic light was erected here in 1925, but the locals believed that the location of the lights sent a subliminal message. The red light in the traffic signal, which appeared above the green, was regarded as Britain having a higher worth. Vandalism ensued, with proud Irish rock throwers targeting the red light. The light was repeatedly restored, but the neighborhood's Irish pride was unwavering, and the red light continued to be smashed. From https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/upside-down-traffic-signal, "A local Alderman named John "Huckle" Ryan proposed that the green and red light positions in the signal be switched, so green would appear above the red and the Irish vandals would be put at ease. The town agreed that it was a good solution and it worked perfectly until the State of New York overruled the idea and made them change it back. The State of New York apparently didn't understand Irish pride, because taking away the solution only caused the vandals to become even more incensed than before, and the light continued to once again be broken regularly. "Finally, on March 17, 1928 a meeting took place with local residents and city officials, where the residents stated in no uncertain terms that the light would continue to be broken if it remained. City officials caved, and the light was changed back to showing green on top, yellow in the center, and red on the bottom, the configuration that remains to this day." The room is a kind of small so they can only let in a certain amount of people at a time. Everyone was very patient. The long tables are set up full of books and when a box is emptied there are more books put out. They are only divided by Fiction/ Non Fiction and Children's. It is $5 per bag - Holy Cow....WOW! I really want to give a big shout out to all the employees who were working the sale on Saturday.,.they were incredibly friendly and helpful. (It was my first time there) They helped me to my car with 3 bags Full of books.... offered me a chair when I was finished and waiting for my friend. Thank you Liverpool Library!

Each book section is well labeled and there are always computers available. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. They help with so many aspects of library life.

It's advised to call in advance to make a reservation, but there were several walk-ins when I visited and they were easily accommodated. Admission is $7 and includes the tour. The historical site is operated solely by Reverend Paul, a highly knowledgeable steward who had such a passion for honoring and celebrating the life of Harriet Tubman that he quit his job in Washington, DC and moved to Auburn to run this landmark. Paul was a fantastic guide. He checked everyone in at the start of the tour. If you arrive early, you can wander through the visitor center on your own, which has photos and facts about Tubman, her contemporaries, and other relevant details about the Underground Railroad, abolition, the Civil War, and women's suffrage. Once the tour starts, attendees sit while Paul spends about an hour telling Tubman's life story in great detail, from childhood to old age. Paul's talk is thorough, humorous, and wonderfully educational. He asks for audience participation throughout to keep the group engaged. After the talk, we moved to one of the houses on the property that was open to the public and where Tubman actually lived. Paul shared additional details about the history of the abode. It contained furniture pieces to exemplify what might have been inside the home when Tubman lived there. After the tour, attendees were free to walk the grounds, return to the visitor center, or peek inside the other brick home on the property, which was not open for entrance. I would budget about 2 hours for the experience. Great opportunity to learn about Tubman, a remarkable and legendary figure who shaped our nation's history.

However, from time to time I have found myself on various parts of the "Scenic Byway Route 20" and seen the signs indicating such. So recently I drove the whole Scenic Byway. Its about 100 miles from the beginning to the end (US Route 20 is longer than that). It is part of the historic (1927) Transcontinental U.S. Route 20 highway, which is 3,300 miles in length, from the Atlantic Ocean in Massachusetts to the Pacific Coast of Oregon. From the website: "The Route 20 scenic byway corridor celebrates Central New York's diverse heritage, natural beauty, and agricultural vitality, and is defined by rolling hills and broad vistas framed in a working landscape, lakes, tranquil communities, and historical places. The visitor experience is a reflection of Americana, a slowdown of time from the stir of the city, a chance to imagine how travelers used the corridor through history and an opportunity to explore a working landscape." If you find yourself with some time on your hands, this is a very nice drive on a nice weather day. I'm not sure I'd want to do it in a snowstorm or driving rain, its twisty, turny and one lane in areas. But on a nice day, its a great ride. Through some smaller towns in NYS, the Montezuma Wildlife Preserve, a college town or two, all very quaint areas. I am looking forward to having the time to do this route again soon. I encourage you to do it as well. 5 stars because its interesting, fun and a nice way to take a drive.

Generally speaking, small town libraries are, well, small. They tend to have few programs and a…read moremodest catalog. So I was pleasantly delighted when entering the Lang Memorial Library in Cato, NY. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and they clearly have good outreach to the surrounding town - everything from a robust mail service to people who cannot get to the library during open hours (shut ins, new parents with sleeping babies) to a knitting class to summer kids' programs. You can have something faxed, check the internet, get a movie or a book. Parking is no problem, there is a good sized lot behind the library. This place is a gem, and I salute them for the work they are doing! Next time we are in Cato I will be certain to pay them another visit.
