The food is very filling and honestly the best food we've tasted here in Stuttgart! This is an authentic gourmet restaurant with a Michelin Star; these are earned, not by yelp reviews and random people, but by the big wigs. They've earned it and have maintained that reputation regardless of what other reviews show. My wife and I had the duck and deer for the main courses. Both were incredibly amazing! We cleaned our entire plate and were tempted to lick them clean. We ordered the beef tartare for the starter and we probably had the same euphoric reaction a Lion would biting down on on some caribou. For dessert, we chose the Sorbet and the Almond Pudding/Cake. 20/10 for all of the food; all of which was recommended by Rusty so thank you for that! Danke schön! We were recommended, by Rusty, the Primitivo red wine and the Lugano white wine; both Italian wines were incredibly delicious and a perfect pairing for the meal! We tried a glass of both to start and decided to buy a bottle of the Primitivo; good choice! There are many more wines and more elegant/High-end wines but we stuck with the recommended Primitivo. We loved the ambiance, and the spinning clear dome chairs suspended from the ceiling were a nice way to get a little cozy together. The music varied, but all tunes were perfect for the mood! They had R&B, Alternative, Jazz, and other good tunes! A lot of individuals are saying it's expensive; most likely due to the "small portions/price,"but as mentioned, these proportions are perfect and the taste is worth the price! A good filling meal and a great night; we will definitely return for a future endeavor! Johanna and Rusty were tending to our requests and we couldn't be happier with their performance, professionalism, kindness, sociability, and the service! You both were awesome and we thank you! To the chef and all the kitchen; BRAVO! Thank you for the meal.

It was a really lovely beer - my only complaint is that others at the table got twice the amount of foam on top that I got. For food, they have a main menu of all the typical Swabian biergarten foods and but there are also seasonal specials. Right now it's asparagus and strawberries in season, so they were featured prominently. I had a dish of asparagus with crepes and hollandaise, which was very memorable! The asparagus was cooked to this almost creamy consistency while still maintaining the brightness of fresh vegetables. The crepes were buttery and very good. I don't get why it was so expensive though - it was €22 which was more expensive than most of the meat dishes on the menu and it was just a normal-sized dinner. We were in a huge group that reserved the whole restaurant, and for the most part the staff sufficiently managed the big group. There wasn't too long a wait to order and our food came out in a reasonable time.

We had the Weiner Schnitzel and the Schwabenstolz, as in everything from the Schweber kitchen. The spatzle and maultasche were outstanding! So many that my friend Achim from Bavaria refers to them as the "Bavarian Embassy!" I have hit many Paulaner restaurants in Germany over the years, but this is one on my favorite spots, nestled in a little square under the trees and surrounding a nice water fountain. I come here on every visit to Stuttgart. I have actually hit this spot twice in the past year. The last time was during the World Cup, when I managed to get a seat next to the fountain with a perfect view of the TV. On the most recent occasion, I sat on the other side of the fountain. This place is usually bustling, and it is difficult to grab a table outside, but the staff always seem to accommodate me. I always order a nice, fresh and cold Hefeweizen beer, and even though I peruse the menu, I get the same thing- Schweinshaxe, or Pork Knuckle, they do it like no one else- it's ALWAYS consistently good, juicy, crispy, perfect. The last time I came with friends, this time it was just me, and I struck up a conversation with a local, such an enjoyable time, and happy to see the locals frequent this place. My mouth waters thinking of the food and I look forward to coming back again next summer!

To end the evening, we ordered a dessert we've never had before called "Des Kaisers Liebling" which was fried dough with powdered sugar and some fruit compote. Again, it was good, but maybe wouldn't order again. I gave this place five stars for the service and how mom and pop the vibes felt.

You get the standard spaetzle but this version is with melted cheese sauce so it's exactly like Mac and Cheese! There's a slab of some mystery meat - the jury's still out on that delicacy. To round it all out you get the "meat ravioli" which is really just a greasy meatball wrapped in a soggy pasta tube. THEY DON'T SERVE APPLE STREUDEL HERE. This should be illegal in Germany. It's just not right. How can you call yourself a German establishment and not serve the national dish? Good beer though. And the crowd is really into their soccer. Waiters aren't too friendly, so don't expect epic service. When you have your fill try scoring a goal in the loo.

After passing some mediocre looking Thai and Chinese places, I spotted the tiny entrance to the Calwer. Looked vaguely familiar. After sitting at the bar all of two minutes, major flashbacks to 1997 came up. Found the same place by accident in '97 while then too walking without Yelp direction with hunger pangs! Calwer then and now is unique in Germany - a brew on premises pub. What's a little disappointing though is the lack of of Mazen or something hoopy like a Jever. Yeah, I know about the micro-region styles of Germany. A pils, hefe, dunkle and that.s it. Previous visits here coincided with the cannstatter volksfest, so they usually had a rich Marzen on tap (that always had a faint sulfur aroma). The food - textbook Wurtemburgh ~ Swabian German. But they were out of Schwinhauxxen (not unusual for many haufbraus). Had the sauerbraten with spatzle instead - meat was tough, gravy was great, onions were not cooked enough. Big plus is they have a house made Schnapps made from beer. Its good.
