Loads from the US and Paris too. It's priced accordingly, but not terrifyingly high end. I lucked out by looking at winter wear when one half of the store was all 50% off and scored myself a nice jacket at half price. The girls in the store are lovely and really helpful without being pushy. Bonus if Winnie the Whippet is in store to have a sneaky cuddle with. Stocking everything from Ancient Greek Goddess sandals to keypad covers for your mac, gorgeous clothes from around the world to jewellery conversation starters made by some sisters in Queensland - you will be impressed by Laine. But quality stock is not the only thing Laine has going for it, the other key attraction to this store is the friendly assistance and guidance provided by it's lovely owner, Alyce. Oh and her sweet pooch Winnie is there to help too! There is no website or mailing list yet but you can get your fix of new arrivals from the Laine facebook page, even make an order from the photos for some items. There are items to suit all budgets and styles. Must go now, I have shopping to do.

It's the bargain hunters dream come true - but remember it's a warehouse store, not a boutique - so you really have to look carefully and dig deep. I'd give yourself at least an hour depending how much you want to spend. The best thing about this place is, you're free to roam about without pesky sales staff following you around.

If jewellery is your thing and you're on a tight budget, check out Lovisa. They have a great range of classic and cool styles. Much of it is a lot cheaper than their normal stores. Thanks to their outlet, I now own more pairs of earrings than I will probably ever wear. The Cotton On outlet is enormous. In addition to the standard Cotton On men's and women's ranges, they also stock sister brand Rubi Shoes. They often have cute shoes crazy cheap eg. 3 pairs for $10 deals are not uncommon. Look out for the cute $2 tote bags too. As the normal Strandbag stores are pretty reasonably priced the savings at the outlet don't tend to be massive but it is still worth a look. The outlet has a great selection and I've always been really happy with the quality of what I brought there. If you're into stationery don't miss checking out Typo. They often have great journals and notebooks on sale. I really need to stop buying those! Trade Secret is an interesting store to have a browse in. They stock a very large range of assorted fashion and home-ware items from a range of designers. There isn't many of each particular item so it takes a bit of rummaging through the racks. Personally I haven't had much success in there but you're a size that a lot of designers like to make for you might get lucky.

And after walking in 30 degree heat (it was actually very humid too), I was feeling like chocolate might be my only hope. Then I stumbled across a boutique called Desire and wondered why I had never been in this shop before. I took one last look, not expecting to find anything and instead found three dresses. One was a long flowy floral dress (perfect for summer) with a slim woven belt ($59), a polka dotted dress ($59) and a stripey sun dress for weekend wear. I left with a full bag and the damage was minimal compared to what I would have spent at other more known boutiques. I do admit that there were some tacky, cheap looking suits in there which were much to be desired (pun intended) but funnily enough, they also had some pretty cool stuff.

They carry a good range of jeans - Nobody, True Religion and Mavi, and all of the dresses, tops and trousers are arranged by colour rather than brand. I find this a really easy way of picking out pieces to try on together - it's obviously a clever attempt to get you to buy more and I admit it sometimes works on me! Don't miss the jewellery in the glass counter as it's super-cute, and they've got some brands I haven't seen elsewhere.

I enjoy the shirts and a great thing about them for me (being nearly 2m tall) the shirts are trim but long, fit me perfectly!

The look is sleek and very modern with minimal colours and interesting textures. Both men's and women's wear are gorgeous and made with love and expertise. This is a brand that we should be proud of and was started here in Melbourne - no wonder it is so great! It has more of a European edge to the clothes and makes a nice contrast with some of the lighter and more casual stores along the strip. The space is really interesting - it is only small but they have worked hard to make it appear spacious, and they have succeeded. The clothes are scattered around and there are designated racks for men and women's sale items (yay!). Expect great service, a warm welcome, bold fashion and beautiful fabrics. Bliss.

As the name suggests they exclusively stock.....buttons! This is the store you dont know you need until you rip off a shirt in excitement or a well loved jacket loses one of its difficult to replace leather knot buttons or a wooden toggle clasp. Think hard (impossible) to replace buttons. These are not needs I had anticipated until working in high end retail where if a button pops off a $500 jacket a customer expects a replacement. UM ...........what to do...........Buttonmania! There is literally thousands of buttons in all different styles, sizes, materials, prices, colours, shapes etc etc. A good trick to smarten up an older/vintage jacket or to make a charcoal jacket stand out is to replace the buttons. Its a really simple but rarely considered concept that can change the whole look of a piece of pre loved clothing. Buttons range from .50 to $5 per button for the really fancy ones. A set of four tortoise shell suit bottons will set you back around $12, not a browse for funnsies, but "good to know" store.

A refreshing haven from the overstuffed racks of the local op shops and knock off chains, Rred does…read moreboutique beautifully. A stark, light filled white space wreathed by lipstick red on the building's outer shell; Rred instantly pushes the focus onto its' stock and it's stock alone. All this is generally supplemented by the sounds of indie-electro-pop-alternative, depending on the day and season, which is as good a reflection of the clothing on offer's style as anything else. As for the clothes, Rred produces only a few simple basic clothes designs each season, but makes them with one off or limited run textiles and fabrics, so there's only a couple of each particular garment. Annoyingly, many of the clothes are often 'one size fits all' with all the usual ambiguity as to what exactly that size is, but the stiffer fabrics are generally utilised for the looser cuts and stretchy fabric for the tighter fitting items. There's also a rack of retro/secondhand clothes that throws out some real finds. Among the things that Rred does best is shoes, with a range of boots and/or footwear each season in a wide range of colours, but often themed around a similar, modern-idea-of-an-old-time-y-cobbler's-work aesthetic. Prices generally fall between the $20 to $150 bracket. The clothes are all well cared for, and the staff helpful without being too pushy.

LIFE with BIRD is expensive. No joke. But it's also beautiful. No, not some missive about how…read moreexpensive it is to keep a wife - I'm a liberal arts grad for heaven's sake - but a glowing endorsement of one of Brunswick Street's best little fashion boutiques: the aforementioned LIFEwithBIRD. Doing a fine line in little silk dresses and surprisingly flattering harem pants rendered in natural fibres such as silk and cotton, LIFEwithBIRD's cuts are exceptional and its patterns divine, with the label coming up daisies with everything from minimalist but Avant Garde basics to digital print dresses twisted and pleated this way and that. With prices ranging from $80 for a basic slip to just under a grand for something pretty spectacular, LIFEwithBIRD's sartorial wares are definitely on the pricey side, but the quality is incredible. As such, it's wise to wait for one of LIFEwithBIRD's legendary sales. Or send an aesthetically tuned in boyfriend who's liberal with his cash. Sexism is alive and well.
