I'd been hearing about this place and their famed sub-$50 jeans for a while and really didn't…read morebelieve the hype. I'm now more than happy to report every amazing thing I'd heard about this place was true and I'm now the proud owner/wearer of two pairs (and subsequently my new two favourite pairs) of jeans. They just do jeans (unlike Just Jeans strangely), nothing else. They therefore know their shit. They make them on site and the bloke and lady who make them will also sell them to you. It was funny, mine fit perfect first time (though they did need to take them up, which they did for free on the spot), but my gf was having trouble. Enter the Dejour guy. He made her go for the smaller size, insisting the denim would stretch and soften to her arse. He then told her how amazing they looked (which they did) and told her she looked like a teenager again (which she did). He just knew what she needed, and he forced her to let go of any size preconceptions and boldly try for some hot fitting jeans that she now loves so much, she's going back to buy more next weekend. And they're only $40! $40. Do it before you're dead.

Located on Sydney Road in Brunswick, you could be forgiven for walking past Dejour Jeans and not…read moregiving it a second look. But you would have missed out on some pretty killer jeans. It's another place definitely in the hidden gem category. I find jean shopping to be an absolute bitch. I don't consider myself to have an abnormal body shape but wherever I go I'll have to try on about ten pairs of jeans before I get one that fits. And even then I'm not sure if I like them. In Dejour however, I tried on three different pairs of jeans and every single pair fitted like a glove. At $40 each I was tempted to buy all three but ended up just plumping for two of the pairs. The Vietnamese guy who runs the store - who is a really easy-going and fun character - even shortened the legs slightly for me so they fit perfect. I've pointed friends in the direction of Dejour since and they say just how amazing the jeans fit too. The guy also has the latest fashions, cuts and colours in as he pretty much conducts market research on you as you get tailored. I challenge you to go here and not come back with at least one pair!

Don't even bring your wallet, just stick a $20 note in your pocket because that's probably all you'll need to buy the load of clothes and bric-a-brac you're inevitably going to find. This store is enormous and it's full of crap. I'm not being mean, I'm sure they'll tell you the same. The fact is, if you have the eyes and the patience to spot the diamond in the rough, and you don't mind trawling through racks and racks of rough stuff, you'll get your bling, and you'll proudly tell people that it only cost you a fiver...even less possibly, 20% less if you're a student and you buy it on a Sunday, or a senior and buy it on a Monday. Savers provides little red baskets on wheels for you to drag your loot around in until your arms and shoulders are shaking with exhaustion and excitement, and you know there's nothing left to do but to queue for ages (sometimes) for a change room to make sure that flowery, mid-80s, Sussans shirt goes with the long, Indian skirt you found in the Long Indian Skirts aisle. This goes with that, you know the jingle.

Another admirable collection of the finest the op shops and warehouses had to offer in second hand…read moreclothing and accessories, all sourced into one compact store. Unlike a lot of the other retro stores in the area, a hefty portion of their goods are from decades farther back in time than the 1980s. A lot of the accessories are real statement pieces, and will not appeal to anyone wanting to fade into the background, although that statement also applies to pretty much everything else this store has to offer, too. Most of the sizes are on the smaller side, which is to be expected considering the eras from which they are sourced, but occasionally you find something cut so the modern day average Australian woman can shine, too. Like most vintage stores, it can be a bit pricey, but you're unlikely to find anyone else with the same thing. There's about the right ratio of stock to store space, so there's enough to keep you occupied for a few minutes without feeling as though you're drowning in an avalanche of potential finds you simply haven't the energy to sift through. The staff are friendly and helpful if you need them, but don't get in your way if you don't. There's always a few sparkly and metallic numbers amongst its wares, so the magpies among us will usually be entertained. As with most shops of this genre, you have to happen by at the right time for the store to be open, but I've somehow managed to sync up with its' timetable frequently enough.

Rewind, turn back time and retrograde yourself into this glamorous little vintage clothing store…read moreand channel your inner Audrey/Joan/Grace/Sophia (god knows those ladies are still infinitely more interesting than today's Britney/Rhianna/Cheryl/whatever). There's loads of animal print, bling, leather and fur in this one-stop glamour shop, and interesting little brooches, rings and sunglasses for flamboyant accessorising. The vintage dresses are in excellent condition, freshly dry-cleaned or laundry washed, and they are all gorgeous. The price reflects this so it is quite expensive, but if you're after a one-of-a-kind dress for a special occasion, and you don't want to buy new, this is the shop to find it. I came in here to find black, lacey gloves to wear with a vintage dress to a 'Mad Men' party. There was nothing in store, but the lovely owner reckoned he had some at home and asked me to come back tomorrow. I returned the next day and, true to his word, two pairs of black lace wrist gloves for my eyes only. Such service, such style.
