My 6 yo daughter had been wanting to start karate for a while now so I went with the top rated place near me. It's no wonder why they have the rating they do. We both LOVE One Martial Arts. The entire welcome experience could not be more perfect. You book a free trial class easily online and show up to find your kids name on a big sign with a free t-shirt waiting. They are super supportive in the class and let the first-timers do a board breaking at the end so they get absolutely hooked from the jump. The joy in their faces after that board breaks and they feel so powerful is priceless! Arrive for your first real class their uniform is at the ready on the front desk. Seriously, so organized! We love the instructors. They break the kids into smaller groups so she's gotten to work with Shīfu Bender and Shīfu Fidler and Shīfu Lucas Dela Cruz who are all wonderful. They have an app that makes everything super easy. Including instructional videos kids can use to practice. When you arrive you just check your kiddo in on the ipad (they are located right next to the after class lollipops). The class itself is the perfect blend of skill-training and fun. They learn respect, discipline and hard work, then they get to play a fun game at the end like freeze tag to get all their energy out. They also earn sticker stripes leading up to the different color belts. My kiddo is highly motivated by this and always looks forward to the "earn" days. The support staff is super responsive and helpful with inquiries and questions. There are plenty of benches to sit and watch but it's in a great neighborhood so always fun to run out and grab a snack or bubbletea. read more

My son has enjoyed summer camp at One Martial! He has gone when he was 6- and 7-years old. Throughout the year, he talks about how fun it was and asks when he can go again. The counselors are engaging, make sure the kids have a great time, and the lead instructor had great communication (including, sending photos of my kiddo) and really connected with each camper. One marital art's instructors are strict, encouraging and often times very positive. Some students have different personalities and abilities, the instructors are generally very patient with the children. They teach kids good characters which is very important to our community. My son can be stubborn and easy to lose tempers. This class gives him a sense of the importance of discipline and sense of community building. read more

It's not intense in that there's any shaming or punitive approach to the instruction. I was trying to assist a young homeless mother and finding an activity for her son and came across this place with a free 45 minute session. Upon arrival there was a big sign personalized for the young man with his name welcoming him and this was so heartfelt and touching, the staff was courteous and kind. They sent home plenty of information, coloring activities, and personal badges or patches. I should say that could be added to the uniform, or even just a T-shirt if you choose to do so unfortunately because the mom is homeless, she is unable to afford the Lessons. It's unfortunate as the young man is still asking about karate lessons. It would be nice if maybe scholarships or partial scholarships could be awarded for such situations like this hopefully in the near future we can assist with getting the young man back on track with the lessons because he thoroughly enjoyed him. His instructor was very engaging took his time and made the experience all that much the better thank you for a memorable day. read more

This review is for the birthday party that we had on 3/10/19 for my daughter's 5th birthday at One Martial Arts SF. If to say in a few words: It was AWESOME!!!!!! It definitely exceeded my expectations. First of all, It was very well organized. They did such a great job decorating the party room with themed balloons and the customized birthday banner. Even water bottles had a theme label on them! Second, the staff was very friendly, attentive and engaging to all kids. I was pleasantly surprised how many staff members they had present for the party. The games were really fun and entertaining, like dodge ball, zombie tag etc. and of course the favorite of them all - the breaking board part :) Very well done!!! read more

I was fortunate enough to have a few months off work. During which time, I started attending the weekday kickboxing classes at OMA to try something different. There isn't a lot of fitness options here in the Outer Sunset, and I needed something more than running. I was hooked after my first class. I love that the class is intense, but you can still go at your own pace. After a few classes, I noticed the difference in my overall fit. Two weeks later, I dragged my husband to join me in a Sunday class, and now he loves it, too. All of their instructors are great! I've had Jason, Dexter, Gail, TJ and Lucas. Each have their own style but are consistent in that they really motivate you. I am grateful to OMA for helping me getting into better shape. I am sad I won't be able to attend the weekday classes for much longer...but I am hoping they eventually offer early morning classes to accommodate those who work, and may not be able to make it to their night classes. read more

I honestly have nothing bad to say about this place. I started going to OMA with the 5 classes for $30 deal. Initiallingy I was sold because it came with kickboxing gloves and I thought (what a deal)! After my first class I was hooked. After my 5 classes were used up I ended up buying a 7-month membership which allowed me to take as many classes as I wanted for 7 months. For kickboxing classes there were two time slots each day which made it more flexible for my schedule. Every workout was amazing. I would leave drenched in sweat and feeling good about myself. There were so many days I did not feel like leaving the house but I'd drag myself to go and I've never regretted doing so. The staff there is wonderful. I'm a pretty shy person but eventually I did become very comfortable there and I've never felt embarassed or judged which I find really important in a fitness environment. Sometimes classes can be packed but it never impacted my performance. Instructors go around helping everyone to fix their technique. There is warm up and cool down. For the most part you just follow the instructor's actions but there are 3 rounds of free-for-all where you can go at the bag however you please. The environment is very positive and motivating So what were my results like after 7 months? To be honest there were months I would go very consistently, and months I only went a few times. But I went maybe an average of 3 times a week and my arms were so toned and my body felt tighter. This is without dieting by the way. In those 7 months I was at the best shape of my college-life (so far). Unfortunately, I have not renewed my membership because well, I am a 21 year old struggling college student. I do hope to return some day! read more

I switched to this cardio kickboxing studio after starting a new job in the city. I definitely like all the late night cardio kickboxing classes. All the instructors are really great and willing to teach you new, exciting moves to go along with your work out. They always push you to challenge yourself for a better work our each time. It's definitely a lot more crowded than what I'm used to with my old studio in Emeryville. The space is small and when they run promotions, a lot of people take advantage and it gets even more crowded. I would recommend coming to class early to get the spot you want. It's also pretty expensive without having a lot of class options. It's mostly a 6:30pm or 7:30pm class depending on the day so if you're like me and constantly working late hours, you have no choice but to miss class. If you're looking to do heavy bag work outs, DO NOT go to the morning 9:30am classes. I made that mistake and was extremely disappointed. What was more disappointing though, was that if you're new to the 9:30 pure cardio workout, the instructor will not provide clear instructions so that you can follow along. She pretty much leaves you to trip over yourself. read more

Our family loves everything about OMA, not least is their focus on the community- the OMA community, but also the community at large. OMA teaches not just the student, but the whole family. Family and student are greeted at the door, there are community events to celebrate various holidays, kids camps, and an annual tournament. Our son learns martial arts physical techniques, but also respect for himself and for others. He's learned the value of practice, the value of focus, and value of fun. For purely selfish reasons, I thought twice about writing a review, because kickboxing classes here have gotten so popular, it's starting to get really crowded. I bought the $50 10-classcard from Groupon, which also comes with free gloves and a bottle of water. I have to say, it's the most challenging cardio class i've ever attended, and I'd give myself a fitness rating of about 6-7. I am a couch potato by nature, and on any given day, would rather be watching a real housewives marathon than working out. But i enjoyed the physical challenge of the first class so much (i didn't think i'd make it past the warmup---consisting of a light jog, jump rope, jump squats, push ups, burpees, planks TO START) but so far, I've attended 5 classes, and I am starting to see some definition in my shoulders, arms and abs. No 2 classes are exactly the same, and the instructor, Anabelle is a great motivator. If she catches you slowing down, she will run over and motivate you to give it your all. I always leave feeling exhilarated and wanting to come back for more! read more

Ramp up your cardio with their bagwork-based kickboxing class. I got in on a sweet Groupon deal and have been to five classes so far. They don't discriminate against Groupon people - you do have to call in to reserve, but that can usually be done the day of with ease. They don't pressure you to join, but instead give you a big discount if you do before your Groupon classes run out. Kickboxing class is a cardio workout and it's great if you come in with that expectation. They do primarily bagwork with some conditioning (squat jumps, crunches, push-ups) mixed in. There are no partner padwork drills or long, challenging combinations - go elsewhere if you need something more advanced. That said, this is a great environment for first timers because you can go your own pace without feeling bad about keeping up with a partner in padwork. Even when you have to share bags (classes can get really full), you both can still work at your own level. However, since it's cardio based, you don't get much personal instruction other than the instructor holding the bag and encouraging you to go harder, or very basic introductions to moves that are new to you. Instructors will not stop and help you improve your form, even if it's bad. It's best if you already sort of know what you're doing to get the most out of the class. Facilities are great. Small but multiple bathrooms on both floors. Mats all around, vacuumed daily. Street shoes are allowed on the mat if they're sprayed with cleaner and wiped off. (I still wouldn't advise put my face on the mat during stretching) You can watch part of kids class before you go to kickboxing. Very cute and motivational to see how they inspire the little ones too. If I had a kid, I'd take them here! read more

I bought a groupon for 10 kickboxing classes. This place is a good start for beginning kickboxers but the limited facility handicaps your fitness potential. Coupled with the high cost of regular classes, this place earns an "A-OK" for trying but doesn't fit within my fitness goals. My main problem is the facility. This studio resembles a converted house, with the walls taken out on the inside. That means low ceilings and a cramped floor. Also, the studio's main income seems to come from kids karate camps (judging by the pictures on the wall; the newsletter that focuses on kids karate camps; and the all-kids-karate programming at the studio). The studio converts into a kickboxing class by using portable bags weighed down by sand -- extremely annoying as each person eventually kicks their bag into each other. The instructors are ok. After taking several classes with the studio owner and Anabelle (sp?), I get the feeling that both are more aerobic instructors than actual kickboxers. You'll focus more on keeping your heart rate up, instead of actual boxing technique. Even if the instructors tried to focus on technique, the classes are simply too large to have any meaningful improvement. In all, this is a decent place to start your fitness goals. Any kind of movement is going to be beneficial for potato couches or people who are not generally active. However, the limited facility handicaps this place's potential. Also, the classes (they sell monthly passes or X-class passes) are expensive. Try it out via groupon; you may or may not like it. read more

As you get to know the instructors, you can tell they are awesome folks who are there to help you get into shape. In regards to the music- depending who the instructor is, you never know what will play. But I guess new CD's are being made and new songs are popping up as well. Good job for paying attention. It seems more and more folks are signing up, so give it a try folks and who knows, maybe you will love it to the point of wanting to do it everyday. I know I do. Soon to come maybe a review on the martial arts portion of the studio. Once I get my schedule straightened out, Ill be posting more about that. I'm a member of One Martial Arts cardio-kickboxing classes and I absolutely enjoy it! Classes are offered 7 days a week and the workout is great! It entails cardio and weight and strength training. the best thing is that most of the people in the cardio classes go almost every day and have been for months or years that you see the same familiar faces. You get to know each other and enjoy the workout with not strangers, but more like friends. The staff is friendly and Professor is a great positive role model for ALL members of the establishment. Not only is it a great place for cardio kickboxing - i would highly encourage people to have their children of all ages join the martial arts classes. I watch how the instructors teach the classes and they are nothing but postive and encouraging towards children but at the same time they build discipline. They stress the importance of family, self-esteem, discipline and well being. Adult classes are also offered and i see the same positivity in those classes. Try it out! Since moving back to San Francisco, I have tried out 3 locations for kickboxing and I think that this one is going to be my go to choice. One martial arts not only provide a great workout, but it is located close to my neighborhood and the employees are fantastic. In the past, I have done muay thai training but One Martial arts still kick my butt during their kickboxing fitness class. I love it. The only reason I have not given them 5 stars is because of all the places that I have tried out, One martial arts is the most expensive. Being a small neighborhood gym, I expected them to be cheaper. They do offer first time deals but after that expect to pay well over a hundred a month for membership. Overall, great gym with butt kicking workouts. I will definitely recommend but not to those who are trying to save money. read more

I stumbled upon One Martial Arts on a great groupon deal and 1 yr later I am still going strong! Their kickboxing classes are great for people of all fitness levels from your typical couch potato (this was me), to the relatively fit, to the actively fit. The instructors are all very nice and wonderful motivators. They will push you to work your hardest and go beyond your comfort zone. First class under my belt and so far so good. I've been pretty inactive for the past year and I've definitely gained a few lbs since. Something drastic had to change since I'm getting married in about a year. For support, I've enlisted a whole bunch of coworkers to join me and they all love it. Class sizes apparently range from about 15-25. It got a little crowded so you have to sign up early and be prepared to share a bag. I was a little surprised when I saw all the little kids running around but be rest assured that the classes are all adults. It's been two days since my last class and I'm hurting so good! read more

I've been a member there for the past 2 years for their cardio kickboxing classes. It's the best place in town for sure. Before I paid my money I researched and I tried places. When they offer you Cardio Kickboxing classes at the GYM (which I tried more than once) you can't even compare those to the workout you can get at ONE. Be prepared to work hard, it's not easy for those who just start, but don't get discouraged --- the harder you work, the luckier you get! Remember... Brannon who is the owner and my favorite instructor is the best. He is welcoming, supportive and will make you feel good about yourself no matter what shape, size you are. When he teaches he motivates you to be your best, to your hardest and never give up. I love working out with him and I know you will love it too. Other teachers are great as well. Jennifer is a kick-ass instructor and she will work you out hard!!! Friday is the day with her... They also have I think twice a year so called "body-challenge" program where Brannon will work with those who sign up, he will review your food chart every week. I lost weight that way. He helped me in so many ways. Just being there I already feel energized and feel like I am a part of a family that motivates me. It's not only a work out for your body, but for your mind as well. I got the Groupon for 10 kickboxing classes, gloves, and a private lesson, and I am really excited to go to more classes. I've only taken 1 class so far, and it was great: fast paced, challenging, and very fun. The owner was the instructor, and he was helping correct students and motivating the class. There is music going on in the background. Every student gets his or her own punching bag. Through class, you alternate punches and kicks (cardio) with lots of strength breaks like push-ups, situps, and other strengthening exercises. You can do it barefoot or with shoes. The class is mostly women, but there are some men. There are lots of staff to help you check in, and the free boxing gloves are a huge perk! They are 1 pound, so having to hold them up definitely adds to the workout. The only downside to One Martial Arts is the location. It's not accessible by BART. I had to take the bus, and coming from Daly City, this is very difficult. Also, it is a very small space, so be prepared to get rushed by a bunch of kids when class gets out. SUPER kid-friendly place. I saw the owner talking to a new student, and I was so impressed. I would bring my kids here (being 21, I'm happy to report I have none to bring at the moment). read more

My daughter started with One Martial Arts when she was about 5 or 6 in the Little Ninja program, but she quickly progressed to the Kids Karate program. After checking out four martial arts programs in the Sunset, we chose One Martial Arts because: 1. It is clean and tidy. 2. The teachers are oriented towards kids and are constructive/positive. 3. They teach more than karate but also good family and life values (teamwork, focus, discipline, good sportsmanship, respect). My daughter is now a brown belt, and still loves the program. We believe this program has taught her a lot of skills, and indeed she is both a fine scholar and athlete. While some classes can be crowded, try and find the less crowded classes during the week as opposed to Saturday. The school also hosts an annual annual picnic in Speedway Meadows which is a lot of fun for the whole family. We give it a double thumbs up. read more

I purchased a groupon deal for the kickboxing classes for $50 for ten classes. I was a little skeptical in the beginning because I've had terrible experiences with fitness classes when buying it through groupon, but one martial arts has been top notched! Right from the beginning they answered all of my questions I had and they were consistent with customer attentiveness and attention to detail. In addition, the instructors make an effort to get to know you as a person and the front staff as well! Katy is the absolute best! I enjoyed all my class sessions and the scheduling of classes was not difficult. I do recommend arriving to class a few minutes early so you are able to claim your punching bag. The instructors are awesome and they really push you in the conditioning and make you aware that this is YOUR workout and to complete exercises your body is up for, but simultaneously asking you to challenge and better yourself. My nephew is also in the karate class and he is also having a blast! The instructors use positive approaches and my nephew enjoys attending and practicing what he has learned at home. The instructors are wonderful, very attentive to new people. There's no feeling of intimidation here, not like the feeling you get when you walk into a gym and try one of their classes where everyone's competing for some reason and girls mugging at what other girls are wearing and what not. Our 4 1/2 year old daughter loves One Martial Arts! We had the opportunity to try another martial arts place on Lombard (whose name I shall not list), however their monthly dues and teaching practices made us look elsewhere after our first month was over. They also taught Kempo Karate, however didn't include the additional life skills teachings like fire safety, stranger awareness, and danger recognition among others like they do at One Martial Arts (...hows that for a bonus!). At One Martial Arts, their positive reinforcement is second to one. In fact, they are number ONE. Whether it be the skills merit badges that your child can earn, or the special life skill stripes they can also wear proudly on their belt, One Martial Arts not only teach discipline, but also expose them to the core fundamentals (focus, teamwork, self-sontrol, memory, balance, fitness and coordination) prior to teaching the more intricate martial arts moves. I myself went through Shotokan Karate as a child so I can say first hand what to expect. However, the instructors at One Martial Arts make learning fun for kids! If your kid has fun, the learning part stays with your child longer. The "games" they play are great for the kids and build up their martial arts fundamentals without them even knowing it. We have been at One Martial Arts for over a month now, and I can definitely see the difference in our daughter. Her self esteem is way up and she's so proud that she shows off her kata (martial arts routine) to her Grandparents! read more
