We are brand new to the area and searching for a home. I have an ADA medical alert service dog (who I cannot be separated from) and we were greeted at the door by a blonde woman with "we do not allow pets in the office." Totally understand and I proceeded to tell her my dog is not a "pet" she's a medical service dog - providing a service to me, a disabled person. This woman then (illegally) asked to see my dogs papers - which I have no issues providing IF we were to decide we wanted to apply to live there. Her reasoning what's that my dog didn't have a service dog vest - which means nothing and anyone can slap one on their pet and call them a service dog. Had she looked, my dog does in fact have a bright tag/label stating she is a medical alert service animal attached to her. I then explained that legally she has NO right to even ask me that question as I'm protected by law. She's lucky I don't file a formal complaint with the state. Let this serve as a warning that asking someone to explain or prove their disability is never ok and 100% against the law! read more
