I am always nervous to get ombre as i have super warm brassy black asian hair. I did not want to go back to my previous salon where i got my balayage done as it came out too brassy and i had to fix with manic panic myself and i had spent almost 400. Joshua was different! He really understood what i was talking about in terms of wanting to blend in my balayage with my dark roots like an ombre. He toned it neutral/ ashy which i love. The cut he gave me was the best cut I had ever in my life. He kept the length , the ends are flowy, and my heavy mass of hair was lifted. The price was very reasonable- I wouldve never been able to pay that price for the quality in downtown Portland. I'm unsure if it was a loss of communication or if I was very unclear of what I wanted but I am very disappointed in my visit with Danielle. I have always been very hesitant letting anyone touch and cut my hair, the last person prior being a friend of mine almost a year ago. Having curly hair I was excited to come across such a cute salon with stylists that were familiar with curly hair in my neighborhood. Danielle had awesome reviews and fit my schedule so I made an appointment- that I anticipated for over a week. I came in with long curly hair when dry reaching half way down my back. After talking with Danielle about what type of cut I would like she explained to me how the cut I wanted wouldn't turn out how I wanted. How my curls grow differently and the volume on top of my head would only come from styling it. Ok. I was ok with the information. I knew my hair was choppy from the last trim so I thought we came to the conclusion of just a trim, evening out my hair, keeping it past my shoulders. I guess I shouldn't of made the comment, "I'm tired of combing it.' lol She began dry cutting my hair (which I know is how curly hair should be cut) so I enjoyed my rare salon visit, the atmosphere, and just relaxed. When she finished cutting half of my hair and showed me, it was waaaaaaaay shorter then I would've wanted. I've had short hair growing up, so I stayed optimistic with the dry cut and let her continue. With the cut done, hair rinsed, a few different products added, she then put me under a blow dryer. Which I thought curly hair should dry naturally or be towel dried? I sat under the dryer for ten minutes and I could awkwardly see her in the mirror check her snapchat, and send a few texts. Made me feel like I needed to pull out my phone. Awkward....After the dryer she ran her fingers through my roots just frizzing and poofing my hair, and I could finally see how short my hair was. DEFINITELY not past my shoulders, I was devastated. I have short hair, and I kind of feel 14 again. Don't think I will be returning. read more

The products used in my hair made it completely straight- it took me three washes to get all of the powders in my hair out. Update (6/2016): I sadly have to update this review. It appears Taylor has since left, but I decided to support the business and made an appointment with Emmanuel. I have to say, I've never left a hair cut appointment feeling bad about myself, but I left One Design feeling just that. I think it's just in poor customer service to poke fun at your customers or make comments that put them down. Even if it's in intended to good fun. Getting a haircut with someone new can be a pretty intimidating experience, and I didn't feel welcome from the moment I arrived. To go as far as to ask if my hair was burned when I was lighting up is unnecessary. Unfortunately, I don't think I will be returning which is sad after initially having a great experience with a former stylist. 6/2015 I hate getting haircuts. I have very curly hair and the haircuts I get typically leave me in tears. I hadn't found someone in Portland yet but I desperately needed one. So I went to Taylor and boy am I glad I did. He was very knowledgeable on how to cut and style curly hair. He does a dry cut that, for all you curly girls, is essential to a good curly haircut. I'll start this review by saying that I don't get haircuts frequently, and when I have it's been with the same woman since I was three. After having moved from NYC to Portland, it's been a challenge for me to let go and hope to find someone out here who would know what to do with my naturally wavy, hispanic hair. Today I finally just bit the bullet. After a rough day at work I decided I needed a bit of pampering and called up One, hoping that, somehow, I'd be able to get squeezed in. Taylor answered the phone and, to my delight, was able to take me right away. The experience once there was even better- not only did he walk me through what I wanted done (making sure that I was, in fact, prepared to cut all of my very long hair off like I insisted that I did when walking through the door), but helping me to feel at ease about my decision even while my friends and family weren't 100% sure. In the end, after talking it through, we settled on a bob- all the while having great conversation. It wasn't long before he had it at the perfect length and cut in a stylish, age-appropriate way (it's easy to make me look much older than I am). I can't even begin to describe how happy I am with my new 'do and I am definitely going back to see him when I need a trim. All around a great experience :D read more

I really really want to like this salon but after 3 appointments I can say that it is just not a good fit for me. I recently moved to Portland to New York and I came across One Creativity on Yelp! My first appt was with Emanuel. I told him that I was hoping to do a soft ombre. He told me that there wasn't enough time to do ombre and he wasn't sure what color my red would lighten up to. So my only options were to either do a balayage with a small amount of highlights or do one test strip of hair and come back in later if the color was ok. I opted for balayage. The end result was underwhelming to say the least. You couldn't see the highlights and I felt like as if I paid extra for a service that he did just to appease me. My next appointment was with Danielle thinking she might be a better fit. She definitely gave me the ombre I wanted but was unable to make the color seamless. I had hot red roots, medium brown middle, and blonde ends but it was much closer to what I wanted but not perfect. Finally my most recent appointment, my hair doesn't seem to fade well with the red so I look like Neapolitan ice cream, lots of layers of color. I asked if she could try and get rid of all the lines of demarcation while keeping the ombre. This proved to be impossible. I ended up with bright red roots, brown middle, and blonde ends each with a strong line of where the color began and ended. I expressed my concern to Danielle and we decided that it's not possible for me to have ombre hair because it doesn't hold the red pigment well. So I opted for all over color instead. Without consulting what color red I wanted Danielle mixed up a glaze and went to work. I am now 3 shades darker than I want to be. It doesn't match my skin tone and it's going to be a pain to fix. I know that I am perfectionist and that can be super annoying in a client. However I have never had so much trouble trying to attain the color I want. Side note with exception to Taylor who is incredible no one is very chatty or welcoming. At no point did Danielle or Emanuel try to talk to me or get to know me while I was in their chair. read more

I made an appointment here for a cut and color. The online appointment system is very convenient. My haircut was well done and I would actually consider going back here for a haircut in the future if I didn't need highlights. However, as a dark blond who prefers to be a lighter shade, I would not recommend this place for highlights. No toner was used and the highlights did not blend well. I was really unhappy with the color used (kind of ashy-bleachy), the lack of cohesion, and the dark roots. Sorry... but if you're blond, I'd try another place in Portland. read more

After a recent move I needed a new stylist (more conveniently located to my office) - always a daunting task in this city where most stylists get a mixed bag of reviews - half of the people rave and half of the people threaten legal action. Months ago a friend of mine at Portland Bride and Groom Magazine had handed me a card and said, "You MUST call Emmanuel. The man is a genius." I put it in my wallet, but content with my old stylist didn't think much of it - until a recent move made her location incredibly inconvenient. I'm in the process of growing out an asymmetrical cut, which is a dreadful thing to go through, and also trying to figure out my long-term hair style, and trying to find someone who can do a great job with color. These are three challenges in this city - trust me. But it's hair, I made an appointment figuring if he wasn't the genius he was made out to be, whatever. Emmanuel - I love this man. Within moments of talking he knew exactly how to handle my hair, totally understood my concerns (for example, my hair is very fine and if you layer it too much, it doesn't look like a great haircut, it looks like rats have been chewing on it - and despite yelling at stylist after stylist to never layer my hair they always, always do, insisting it will look fantastic - he promised he wouldn't and hasn't!), and was ready to embark on the next few months with me as I grow out my hair. I've been in three times now - and the last time I went I practically left in tears of joy. I have been looking for over five years for someone who knows how to do color in this city - truly do color. I had a woman in NH who would highlight my hair in such a way it simply looked natural, not like highlights at all, and as such you can grow your hair out for months and it still looks fabulous and natural and not like you were attacked by a salon student with bleach. Emmanuel set to work on my highlights and I could see immediately he was doing it RIGHT - and sure as hell, after rinsing and drying and trimming me up so I would look fantastic for my Korean vacation, I couldn't believe how amazing and natural my hair looked. I love him so much I have sent my boss's wife (an LA transplant who has also hated every stylist and colorist in the city) and she is just as in love and enthralled with him as I am. We cannot stop talking to each other about how much we love our hair now! His work is incredible, he's thoughtful, and his prices cannot be beat. If you have curly or wavy hair I HIGHLY recommend scheduling an appointment with Josh! I have been to numerous of hairstylists and Josh is my absolute favorite!: Josh is a wonderful person and stylist. I don't like to ask a lot from my hairstylists because I know it can be difficult working with curly hair. But, I recently decided to completely change my hairstyle: I ended up cutting off 12 inches and getting bangs. Asking for this on top of having curly hair can be challenging. Yet, Josh was very kind and helpful throughout the entire process. Josh was respectful of my desired hair style and even gave me plenty of (affordable and at-home) recommendations in taking care of my curly hair. My appointment lasted for two hours but seemed like less as I had such a great time. I was also his last appointment for the day so I felt bad for making him work so much! I had Emmanuel, the owner, and he has to be one of the most gorgeous, attractive men I've seen in Portland. But, that's besides the point. Rather than asking me what I wanted, he told me what I needed - and was exactly right. This is what I'm always trying to find in a hairstylist. They're the experts, they should know what to do ... and he did. I have curly hair, long and frizzy and he transformed it in one visit into something lush and silky. Best of all, he focus on all natural products - taking it one level more than your typical "green" salon, where he wants to develop his own potions of product. I almost hate to spread the word because it's just the two of them, and they'll be booked out til forever. If I could give more than 5 stars, I completely would. I just moved from Florida a little less than a year ago, where I had an amazing hairy stylist I saw for 10 years. In the 10 years we experimented with color after color, leaving my hair (which is pretty strong) damaged, but not too damaged. When I moved to Portland in January, I had to have my bleached white-blonde from my original nearly-black hair for a theater production I was a part of. I ended the process with terrible, beyond repair damage that included breakage in the worst places and frying my beautiful, natural waves. I went to another salon in Beaverton saying I wanted layers and smooth bangs, etc. Long story short, she BUTCHERED my hair. THIS is where ONE comes in. I booked an appointment with Emmanuel and honestly, I feel like this is the absolute best money I have ever spent. I am not lying. I know what good hair looks like, and while mine is obviously still damaged (it was pretty bad) it looks better than it has EVER looked. One Creativity and Design is conveniently placed and easy to find. The most difficult part about the process was opening the door. I was greeted by Taylor (I think that's his name) who was very kind and offered me drinks immediately. As I waited, I saw Danielle and Emmanuel both working on other clients, who both also looked amazing. Emmanuel very carefully analyzed my hair and told me exactly what he could do to help me and what needed to be done. I had about half a foot of fried, frizzy hair, and choppy bangs for him to work with. But he is an artist. He started cutting and he was very focused, yet very laid back. Through out the process, he gave me amazing tips on how to help my hair become stronger again. I also got a color done and I am so impressed with the color he gave me. I told him I just want a clean slate, and my hair to be as back to "normal as possible". He gave me that and so much more. He taught me how to curl my hair best, and the curls he gave me honestly surprised me, as they were ringlets I hadn't seen since I was probably 8. I'm sure I've reiterated several things in this review, but I can not stress enough how WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY THIS IS. Also, side note. I sat next to Danielle as she colored this other woman's hair to a bright, vivid red. I was pretty mesmerized by it. Everyone here is so professional, nice, dedicated, and they all know their stuff. Had an appointment with Josh today. I admittedly was 7 or so minutes late. When I walked in he was getting his haircut by another stylist. I thought that was fine, I could wait a few minutes. 15 minutes later while they chatted, threw around the f bomb and ignored me, I stewed and thought how to just say never mind and leave. I really needed a cut so I stuck it out. Said I wanted layers in the back but to keep length. 10 minutes later and my hair was 2 inches shorter. He did only charge $40 since it was a short appointment but still not worth it. Super lame customer service. It's like you have to be cool to be seen. Whatever. Won't be back. read more

Amazing! I decided to try this salon because they had a Groupon and I was fed up with my hair. My hair is on the thick side and was down to the middle of my back. I went in thinking I was going to chop it all off and have like a bob or pixie style cut. What I wasn't expecting was a stylist who listened to me and then told me that they had something better in mind. And it turned out great! I love the cut Danielle gave me. It is sleek and frames my face wonderfully and the color is amazing! Danielle took what I said and took it a step above and made me much happier with my hair than I expected. Not only that but she took her time. I didn't feel like she was rushing at all and she took a full 3 hours on my hair. She took her time an made sure the style was good and the color was good. The salon is small, which is pretty awesome, and comfortable. Normally I feel lost in salons an hate going because the stylists tend to gossip with each other. Not the case here. The stylists are very attentive and offer coffee and tea to their customers. The atmosphere is very relaxing. This would have been a 5 star rating but I still have some dye on my skin that I'm trying to get off. Other than that tiny thing. Wonderful salon!!! I am likely to go back again. I had an appointment with Emmanuel earlier this week, and left feeling disappointed. I think he knew to some extent that I felt this way, because he told me I could come back in a few days if I wanted any changes made since it was the first time we meet. The sentiment was nice, but I don't trust him to touch my hair again. Here's the story: I went in with unwashed hair, expecting that most salons shampoo before a cut. He did not, and told me that I should only be washing my hair every three to four days anyway (btw: it was super greasy). He did not wet my hair, and decided to cut it dry instead. I felt like he was in a rush to get me out of his chair, and actually seemed annoyed when I told him about how much I liked my previous stylist who left the salon to move out of state. I tried to verbally engage with him, but he had no interest. I ended up with hair that was an inch longer on one side (not intentional), a missing chunk from a layer in the back, and jagged edges. Seriously, I think I might have been able to do a better job myself. I left the next day for vacation, and I decided to get it fixed on my trip because I felt so uncomfortable with how I looked. read more

This was the worst haircut experience I've ever had, and the first time I've ever cried over a haircut. I got my haircut with a tall blonde lady who never told me her name, she was eating when I got there and took time to finish her food before acknowledging me. Which was awkward because it's a tiny salon and only one other person was in there when I walked in. She couldn't say hello? I had an appt after all. I explained to her that I was trying to grow my hair out and that I wanted the black roots of the partial blonde I have to be bleached. I explained that I had a little breakage in the blonde and I knew that but I was working towards a specific style and that I wanted her to work on the blonde separately from the black. I said trim 1/4 inch off the black and a seperate 1/4 inch from the blonde. I told her I knew it would be uneven and that I didn't care, that I was growing the length out. I told her I LOVED my layers and wanted to keep them. She told me she wanted to cut a little more, 2/3 of an inch tops because that would make it healthy. About the blonde: I told her I ONLY WANTED THE ROOTS DONE. I had to have said that 5 plus times. I explained that even if the new blonde roots weren't an exact match to the current blonde I was okay with that because I didn't want to do more damage to the currently bleached hair. She told me that was great and that she'd just tone the new blonde to match the rest as best as she could. She also said she was going to do a glaze on my hair to make it shiny. I told her I didn't want to dye the black hair and she told me not to worry that all it would do is make my hair shiny and the color more vibrant. So she did everything and in the end she washed the black hair and fresh bleached hair together in the same tub and this "glaze without dye" bled black into all of the blonde and turned it a dark brown :'( she also cut over 4 inches of hair off and didn't blend in the layers at all. She cut it all one length, so I can't go get layers put in without losing even more length. I came in with a side part and my hair styled straight. She cut it with a middle part saying it was what was best, even though I told her I ALWAYS part it to the side on the right. When she was getting ready to style it she asked how I described my style and I said "borderline gothic" which is true, she laughed so hard and even told the other stylist what I said and they laughed at me together, then said "oh, you're serious??" Then proceeded to curl my hair all over. The entire time my hair was processing, over an hour, she was upstairs in the loft of the salon and she didn't come check on me once. She didn't offer me a magazine, or a drink even though everyone else in the salon was offered. While she was cutting my hair I kept trying to talk to her and make small talk, but she was responding with one word answers, and didn't ask me anything about myself so I felt like I was bothering her. To top it all off, I had on a white top from Nordstroms that was expensive and she ruined it with the glaze, it bled through the cape, and stained the whole shoulder black. As well as my skin underneath and on my face! I will never go back to this salon again and really hope that they will reconsider who they hire on and label a "professional" if I, as the client, know you're screwing up, YOU, as the stylist who graduated from a credited school should know as well. read more

Curly haired girls: listen up. This place is a great option for a haircut! I had my haircut with Lindsay and she did a great job with my curly, longer hair. She was great at listening to what I wanted but still giving my hair the cut it needed to look healthy, and also a wealth of knowledge as far as taking care of my curls and maintaining them. I also appreciated that she didn't push buying product on me (despite the fact that they use a specific product system for curly hair). She was running a little late for my appointment, and gave me a conditioning treatment on the house since I had to wait, and I really appreciated this gesture as well. I also appreciated how accommodating she is. I have a weird work schedule, and she told me that if I called ahead she would stay a bit later/come a bit earlier to fit me in on a week day if I wanted. As far as the space goes, it's a cozy joint with just a couple of chairs, it's very clean, and they had some great relaxing music playing in the background. They offer you coffee/tea/etc for your appointment so all you have to do is show up and relax! Make sure you check the website - there are specials for cut/color prices. A few months ago I had an appointment with the owner, Emmanuel. I scheduled my appointment the day before using their online system and had also scheduled an appointment at the same time for my sister. We both arrived about 5 minutes early. Right when we walked in, my sisters' stylist greeted her and took her to get started. I saw Emmanuel finishing up with another guest and just took a seat. At 1:30 when my appointment was supposed to start, Emmanuel was still working on the previous guest's hair. At 1:40, he was still working on the previous guests hair, slowly snipping away at her short bob, and I was worried that maybe he didn't know I was his 1:30 appointment and I had arrived. I thought I would just give him a bit of extra time and told myself that at 1:50 I would say something to him just to make sure he had seen me. At 1:50, I walked over and said, "Excuse me, I just wanted to let you know that I'm your 1:30 appointment in case you didn't know I was here." To which he replied simply, "I saw you come in," and turned back to chatting with his other guest and taking small snips at her bob. At this point I was extremely embarrassed. I was trying to be very polite and conscientious of the fact that he was still working with another guest and there were three other ladies also in the salon who heard our encounter. I sat back down and contemplated leaving the salon. I didn't want Emmanuel to drop everything with his first guest to get started on my hair, however I was expecting a bit more of a polite interaction with him. It was obvious that he was enjoying chatting with his customer and making her bob perfect and I appreciate the fact that he was doing his best work however I would have also appreciated some recognition if he had seen me come in and it was now 20 minutes over our scheduled start time. He could have said perhaps, "I'm sorry, I'm going to go a little over with the guest before you. Just wanted to let you know." Something as simple as letting me know that he saw me and not making me feel foolish for letting him know I was there. I should have left, but I stayed. At 2pm, Emmanuel had finished the previous guests hair, then took some photos of her and still did not acknowledge me. At 2:05, he was helping the previous guest check out and I heard him say to her, "Your appointment ran a bit over, I'm going to give you a discount." At 2:06 he acknowledged me and I was able to sit down in the chair, 36 minutes after my scheduled appointment. My hair cut was pretty quick, and I was very happy with how my hair looked, however, even though my appointment did not start until 36 minutes after it was scheduled, Emmanuel did not give me a discount. I was extremely embarrassed by the entire situation and the way I was treated. Emmanuel does do a really nice job cutting hair, however his customer service seems to be severely lacking. I will not be going back to this salon ever and it saddens me to say that and to even be writing this review. I wish I would have said something at the time and stood up for myself, however I should never have put in this situation and made to feel foolish or embarrassed for simply speaking up and asking about my appointment. I've been into One Creativity & Design a couple times now. My first time in there, the owner offered me various drinks - I sipped on a red wine while I had my hair worked on, which was delicious (definitely not in the same league as the box wine you usually get offered at other places I've been to). The first time I went in was rather short notice, Lindsay got me in there for my random "hairapy". I did wander into a completely different salon looking for her. I didn't think to look up the address before heading over... I'd say that you should definitely look it up first on a map. I swear, a good cut or color is just as good as a Swedish massage for stress! She was super helpful as I theorized about which colors I wanted and patiently mixed colors for me. The space itself is really delightfully relaxed. I like how small it is, and there's a really nice vibe. The second time I came in, I was about half an hour early for my hair cut, but I hung out on the couch and listened to the conversation going on. Lindsay is super sweet and definitely has a way with people! I love my recent cut-- I was a little bit nervous about it, but Lindsay was confident that it would look good and her confidence made me feel better about it as she shaved off half of my hair (yes, I got my first mohawk). I'm still super happy with it a week later and am happy to refer my friends to this salon, for any kind of cut, be it alternative or whatever the latest LA trend happens to be. read more

I just recently came here to get my hair cut for the first time in almost 6 years! Having naturally curly hair, it's been hard to find someone who cuts curly hair well. I went to Josh, and I've never been happier leaving a salon, my hair is adorable and he is an amazing person.
