I was there during a sidewalk sale, and they had $2 costume jewelry out front; a seasonal red/white/blue display, and vintage purses / hats in addition to jewelry. Jewelry is arranged by type; there's a large selection of pearls; dozens of cameos; and, when I was there, a large display of Bakelite and other vintage plastic bangles (with a magazine article on how not all vintage plastic jewelry is Bakelite). Some southwest/turquoise; a bunch of diamonds; lots of colored stones; and even some enamel pieces. If you don't see what you're looking for, ask; I wanted to see amber and they brought out a bunch, and they also had additional mourning jewelry in the back. The people serving me were very helpful, finding bracelets in my size, helping with tricky catches, etc. and they knew their stuff (what era jewelry was from; no, we don't have jet but we have bog oak...). Several customers were obviously regulars; one approached me out of nowhere to tell me how good the staff were to deal with. Prices are very reasonable; I was very pleased with the vast selection, spent less on a couple of pieces than I expected, and went home with some treasures. This is on the main street right next to the Catlow theater; there is street parking and 1 hour and 3 hour unmetered parking a block away at the Jewel.

First off, and probably most importantly for them, and maybe you, is its location. Right at the corner of one of the busiest intersections in more private roads. Downtown Barrington is a hotspot for small business, and Long & Co. most likely stands out the most due to its presence and locale. Second, would probably be the people inside. A bit of a personal backdrop that keeps me coming back: A large coach bus hit my Mom's car that was parked in front of the antique store next door. The owner of Long & Co. immediately jumped out of the store and chased the coach bus down until it stopped all while writing down its license plate number. The whole ordeal was suppressed because of him, really. His generosity can also be reflected in his business structure. After eyeing a gorgeous Bulova Accutron in the store, he gave me a great discount that allowed me to jump on it immediately. All the employees are warm, modest, and know what they're talking about, most importantly. From their watch selection to their Jewelry, but their selection, is primarily where they lose the last star. It can be seen as fairly limited, especially the time-piece collection which consists of Bulova and Victorinox. However, their pre-owned selection yields some VERY interesting pieces. The typical Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust of course, but as of recent, A 1980s Audemars Piguet and Piaget and Cyclos. Top tier names that are actually fairly difficult to find in a Suburban setting, especially the latter. Their other jewelry is top notch, of course, and with a solid history, Long & Co. is an excellent venue to purchase from among the other competition. These people take care of their customers, and for sure want them to know it, and its good to find an institution that authentically knows about the details of what they're selling.

I figured I would give them my business when I needed to get appraisals done on all of my jewelry. That's when my first interaction occurred with the owner Brian. Working in Retail as an executive for 15+ years myself, I'm experience in great, good, mediocre, and abysmal service. When the appraisal for my wedding ring and Rolex came back 30% lower than the appraisals from the place I originally purchased them at, I called to inquire. He spoke to me like I was ignorant and talked in circles about how he did me a favor by low-balling the appraisal. I found him to be incredibly untrustworthy, demeaning, not truthful, and someone I would not encourage giving your hard-earned dollars to. It will spoil a lovey experience like buying jewelry.

How do you think they can afford to be in their high rent district location in Barrington. I won't say don't go there....but if you do, use them the way they try to use you. Get their price on what is essentially, bidding for your old gold and take that as your base price. Then go elsewhere...you will probably do better...I know I did....got about 20% more for my ring ! You might not get a huge amount more, but you will feel better about your experience and your transaction. Be patient and good luck in your efforts.
