We've been to the truck multiple times, once here in the days of Covid. Unlike some others, everyone on the truck was wearing masks. Although they weren't "enforcing" the line at the truck, and people waiting, everyone was pretty good -- considering UC people rarely think masks are a good idea (and we are reaping those behaviors). Anyone who thinks places are going to accept bills and return change is clueless (see review below). Use a card. The food came out in a reasonable time, and was still nice and hot by the time we got it home. It's the real deal. I've had fish and chips in London worse than these. This a review for the Food Truck On Saturday it was a beautiful day. Everyone was out. I think they were sick of being quarantined and the line was long. I thought well they must be good for the line to be through the whole parking lot? For one order of Fish and Chips you get three huge pieces of Fried Cod and French Fries for about $13 The batter in the Fish was delicious. I wish in fact I could just order that with no Fish attached. This brings me to the fish. It smelled a little too "Fishy" for me. I take that as a sign that maybe the fish isn't so fresh? Also it didn't stick to the batter. What I mean by that is they fish was slimy but the batter was crispy and my tongue was confused. The fries tasted like Fish and they got cold and slimy fast too. Went here for lunch with my mom in Topeka, KS. Not only is the food way overpriced for what you get - three strips of fish and a very small portion of fries for $16 per person - then they ask you to give a tip with no way to decline except to explicitly say you don't want to. Almost as if they are trying to guilt you in to paying even more for their lackluster service and food. They ask what's a good name to call when your order is ready, but then act like you aren't the person they called. Then when we get our food, it looks NOTHING like the pictures on their website. We got strips of fish, rather than fillets, which is what we were expecting. As with other recent reviews they were abiding by COVID guidelines and the staff was wearing gloves and masks. Fast forward to today, I saw the food truck as I was grabbing lunch and knew I had to come back to pick up dinner. Let me say, yes there is a steady wait and stream of people ordering, but they are able to deliver fish and chips orders fairly quick. I think we waited approx. 10-15 minutes total from the time we ordered and picked up the food. The guy taking orders was pleasant and personable making light conversation. Great first impression and customer experience. Extremely simple menu - Fish and Chips, Fish only, or chips only. Coming from Alaska, I can say it compares and it probably one of the best I've had. The large piece did have one area where the batter was a little on the soft side. I prefer my batter crunchy.. The batter probably the thickest I've had as well, but each piece of halibut was cooked perfectly in all our orders. They are larges pieces of fish as well! Chips were good, but most places can dish up a mean fry. I do like that they give you siracha mayo and if you need more tarter sauce you'll need to ask for more because they only give you one if you order both fish and chips. Fish was perfectly cooked. Long line ahead of us but we only waited around 7-8 minutes for our order. Fries cooked and seasoned to perfection. We love the simplicity of their 3 item menu KUDOS! Prices were good for the well balanced portions of fish and fries. Plenty of parking where they chose to park. Just be aware that they do not sell drinks, nor have tables in the parking lot for you to sit. But I think the fish needed to be cooked longer. The customer service was also not on the best side. When paying they ask if you'd like to leave a tip. Today I did not, running low on cash and just wishing to taste the food for my first time. The woman that took my order seemed irritated from the lack of tip and proceeded to slam the window on me after I paid. I wanted to love this food truck. I read the website and got a notification they were coming to my area on Facebook. When I showed up there was a line of fans all talking about how great it was. I like finding special food trucks serving unique cuisine. On their website they talk about line caught fish, signature house made dipping sauces, and fries. I love fish and chips, so I was in. Unfortunately, the first thing I noticed were the commercially packaged dipping sauces in my box. To me, that isn't house made at all. On the Hook uses private label, commercially produced and preserved sauces. The fish was indeed good. The breading was ok and the fish was fried well. It wasn't great, just good in my opinion. I could tell it was a high quality cod and it was breaded and fried on the truck. I tasted some seasoning in the breading which was crunchy and airy but it was a bit bland. The fries were the type with a coating which are not my favorite. They tasted as though there were frozen and processed, not fresh and locally sourced. I learned after the fact On the Hook is really a fleet of trucks spanning several states. If you want a local, small experience with unique food, this chain of trucks has outgrown that idea.
