As far as gear goes, I'm an astrophile, so I loved the galaxy look of everything right away and was ecstatic to find that not only did it look good, but performed even better. The gloves I purchased are some of the most comfortable and durable that I own, and I cannot WAIT to grab rash guards and spats! As for training, I came to Alex and Jess from a traditional Okinawan karate background and found that they were able to identify some of the habits of the style right away. This helped me to understand how to quickly translate the knowledge I already had to pick up more of the boxing, MMA, and Muay Thai techniques that they specialize in. I think what I appreciate most is how they approach training for newbies and kids. My teenager had almost no prior training background, is introverted, and is not very physical by nature, by the end of a pretty intense session she was asking about getting her own gear! Truly a place where you will be treated like family and pushed to be your best, no matter if you're looking for fitness, pro coaching, or self-defense.

DC Fighters is the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school to train in Colorado Springs. I have trained in…read morefour other schools throughout my BJJ journey, and here are the top seven reasons I think DC Fighters is the best. 1. Professors Mike and Alec bring the most up-to-date BJJ technique to the curriculum. They never hold back instruction and will patiently guide students from the fundamentals through the most up-to-date techniques developed in the ever-evolving sport of BJJ. 2. Prof. Mike is a retired Soldier who understands what it's like to start and stop training due to deployments and PCS. He has a true knack for assessing a person within their journey. 3. Students learn both sport jiu-jitsu, judo, and self-defense. As a student, you have the freedom to develop and focus where your interests lie. I was interested in becoming a coach, and Mike developed a program just for me to make that happen. 4. For those who already practice and are considering DC Fighters, I think it's fair to say we all hate the ambiguity culture of BJJ and not knowing how we are doing and progressing. Not at DC Fighters, Mike and Alec will tell you exactly where they think you are and what you need to work on to get to the next level in your journey. 5. If you have kids, OMG, this is the place to go! Mike and Alec are fantastic with Kids. Classes are fun and well structured. As kids progress, they have opportunities to compete all the way up to world-level tournaments. Mike is a natural-born coach and leader with many championship kids under his wing. He also provides a safe environment for kids to learn about themselves and test themselves physically and mentally. 6. Training at DC Fighters will allow you to be affiliated with DC Fighters Infight Jiu-Jitsu directly out of Rio, Brazil. Mike is an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) certified 1st degree Black Belt and the first American to earn a Black Belt from DC Fighters in Brazil. Training at DC Fighters provided me the legitimacy of certifying my belts with the IBJJF. 7. DC Fighters is a huge family. I think Mike has like ten of his own kids, and they all train there, lol! Seriously, Mike and his family are good, warm, and welcoming people. They do what they do for their family and the love of the sport. I encourage you to drop in and see for yourself. Regardless of whether you're brand new or have been training for years, I would love to see you on the mat!

But my 11 year old has been in their program under a year and after multiple competition wins in jujitsu is graduating to some Muay Thai training directly from coach. They are great with kids but also the adult classes are amazing. My older son went to another gym and didn't last a year. He got lost in the very high numbers and coaches had a hard time remembering his 3 letter name. This isn't the case here. Coaches know my son and love him and are biting their nails when he competes , and are so proud when he does well. That love and caring that I see from coaches , and teammates is gonna keep my son here for good. Located in the chapel hills mall it's a great location you can get some exercise walking the mall if you want or even use the Matt's if you like. Give it a try DC fighters. You won't regret it! Bud.

I have travelled the world doing martial arts my whole life. I am no master of anything, but I know…read moreexactly what it is that I look for in a place I train. First and foremost, I want a head coach/instructor that knows how to teach. Second, I want my training partners to treat everyone with respect. Last, but not least, I want a clean environment/atmosphere. Cies MMA offers all these things, a hundred fold. Mike, the head coach, is amazing at what he does. The attention to detail when he teaches amazes me. Not only does he slowly break moves down for newer students, he also enlightens more experienced students with new layers to their game. His way of thinking and training is proven and you can look no further than his resume. He's made it to the big leagues of fighting, the UFC and has trained with some of the best to ever do it. He brings that knowledge back with him in his very own gym. The results speak for themselves. The gym has only been open for a few years and has already collected some hardware at tournaments all over the state. The students and teammates are respectful and friendly. My wife and I walked in with our two kiddos and we were welcomed right off the bat. Egos are left off the mats, the way it's supposed to be. These guys are top notch. I always feel accomplished whenever I leave the mats because I learn something new about myself every time. The atmosphere is what really drew my wife and I to stay. The mats were clean, the people are amazing, the coach knows what he's talking about, and the smell of progress is in the air. After training, it's smiles all around and it feels good that you get to grow with others around you. Even if you've got a little beat up, you come away with something new. It is a high level team that will push you to become a better you. Whether it be Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or MMA, this is the place to be. It's a place full of people from different walks of life, learning to become better versions of themselves. Martial arts is a journey of a billion roads, but I am grateful to be part of this team in this current path. We are all swimming in the same ocean, just riding different waves. Jump in, you won't regret it! Oss!

Update after the owner response: I initially gave a 2 star review because of my own experiences. Me…read moreasking about the fight team when I first joined two years prior is just a petty comment and has nothing to do with my critiques in the gym or my situation. I stand by everything I said. The lineage is in bJJ and wrestling and that is where cies shines. I am a white belt, but I've trained kickbixing with UFC strikers Pete Spratt and muay thai coach Kru Phet Phongsavane for more than 5 years as a casual non-professional athlete. I've also done multiple seminars with Duane Ludwig. I am allowed to have an opinion on striking and just because I've trained with people with good names doesn't mean I'm proficient. The gym itself is really nice. Weights, bags, a wall/fence, a changing room, and showers. The Bjj is also very good. I did sign up primarily for the kickboxing classes which were okay. There is a pretty basic push-pull system of striking. Left-right-left-right. The overall level of striking is pretty low. I'd suggest doing a trial class- you only get one though. You'll notice that they won't give you much feedback on form or application. Nothing on positioning, angles, or distance. You can judge for yourself by watching how the techniques are modeled for the class. Full transparency I did not attend regularly due to the nature of my work in a residential facility. This year I had a number of hardships to include becoming a full-time caregiver of my father, having my employment terminated due to cutbacks the day after closing on my home, having my dog attacked without pet insurace. I was the sole provider while my wife was in school. I offered the buisness owners any level of proof with documentation. I requested to have my account put on hold for payments after some level of financial stress in May. I requested 3 months of suspension. This was denied. Then when my father's health declined and my position was cut I requested to be released from my contract due to financial hardship. This was also denied. The contract does leave it to the owners discretion to terminate the relationship. But it was cited " its a tough time for everyone." On the rare occasion I did attend I believe I was always a good and selfless training partner for the fight team and for new members alike. I was never a trouble maker. I have 4 more months of payment before the contract is up. At some point I will go to the gym and hit the bags but I refuse to attend the classes. I won't have loyalty to a gym that won't consider people, circumstance, and hardship. I'll look elsewhere if I am ever able to attend combat sports classes regularly again.
