A friend at work invited me to join him in a men's strength training group led by Joe Ramirez. The first couple of weeks I felt a little clumsy and off balance. But Joe was right there correcting my form, encouraging me, and soon I felt more in control of my body movement during the workouts. After 3 months not only did I find my clothes fitting more comfortably, my posture improved dramatically, but with a stronger core, my running speed has also improved. I recently set a new personal record on the incline of 31 minutes and 24 seconds. My only regret is having avoided core strength training for so many years. I wish I had found Joe a long time ago. The coach had a tough exterior, but she was very kind and gave great verbal and visual cues throughout class. I could quickly tell that this is a supportive community and I felt safe trying something new, even though I'm definitely not a boxing natural! I really enjoyed meeting so many kind new people who helped me during my class and I look forward to trying more classes here. The studio is located in the chapel hills mall and it has a sparring area, class area and an entire gym. I was excited to say the least because I actually have a punch card with 20 classes left so I messaged them here asking if I could transfer my classes which they said yes! So strike one was when they told me just have them call us to get your info so I thought uh I have to call them to tell them to call you? Why not just call them? But I was like OK so I messaged ilkb in Columbus, GA and they happily said they would (no surprise there), gave them the number and well a month later the folks in GA have left messages or been told to call back later and still no transfer. I finally told the wonderful folks at ilkb GA thank you and to forget it. Any business who can't take a min to call someone back in reference to a customer who mind you would have signed up after the 20 classes because I love this program, isn't an organization I want to deal with. It's obvious they don't care about the people by their actions or shall I say lack of. I'm glad others have had better experience but as for me I couldn't even get the foot in the door and I was trying to give them my business! I was looking for them, not the other way around. The gloves I purchased are some of the most comfortable and durable that I own, and I cannot WAIT to grab rash guards and spats! As for training, I came to Alex and Jess from a traditional Okinawan karate background and found that they were able to identify some of the habits of the style right away. This helped me to understand how to quickly translate the knowledge I already had to pick up more of the boxing, MMA, and Muay Thai techniques that they specialize in. I think what I appreciate most is how they approach training for newbies and kids. My teenager had almost no prior training background, is introverted, and is not very physical by nature, by the end of a pretty intense session she was asking about getting her own gear! But after a few seconds later, I was like, "But what if I like it?" That tiny amount of curiosity pushed me to sign up while I was still hoping that I would not get in (LOL!!) While I was driving to get to the place, I was still nervous. Doubting myself heavily, I reluctantly dragged myself into the studio. AND THE REST IS HISTORY! Did I like it? No, I LOVED it! I had never thought kickboxing was this satisfying! Yeah, I used to work out at the gym having a personal trainer and all that but ever since I quit it, my middle-aged body had been rotting in my hell-like home office chair for my day job. I guess I was looking for a way to get out of the unhealthy lifestyle I had kept for years so today's session at Kickhouse became my wake-up call that I had waited for so many years. The instructors, Casey (hopefully I spelled it correctly) and Mike (I believe) were so engaging (you guys were awesome!!) And they weren't intimidating; they uplifted us mentally (not just physically.) Their contagious energy got us going and the 45-minute session flew by like the Japanese bullet train! I feel awkward, self-conscience and overall lost in a gym. I've tried the classes and being uncoordinated they proved to be even better at embarrassing myself in. I decided to give this a shot. As scared out of my mind as I was of all the above things, I walked through the door ready to listen. I sat down with Casey and had a talk about me, what I wanted and needed...that let someone in kind of talk. After some thought I decided to take the leap and give it a chance. I started with a class the next day. I felt like the new kid on the first day of school. I sat in the parking lot for a while before building the courage to actually walk through the door. One of those..the first step is actually showing up moments. I was excitedly greeted by Casey and because it was my first session one of the other coaches (Mike ) was my personal instructor for the day. Nope..no separate room..he just hung in my orbit after showing me how to stand and make contact as to not injure myself. He would come back and give me a few tips and form corrections as needed as well. I am proud to say by the end of the 45 mins I was still standing. Nope I can't do everything that the others can do but with few modifications and encouragement I will get there in time. Pros for me: I don't feel like the eyes of the world are watching me. No one is waiting around and glaring at me to get off a machine because I'm holding them up. No weird locker room experiences. Pros+ I've started to meet some new people who actually seem glad to see me. I don't feel awkward as beginner as I am with things. I've taken a big step in building my own strength. I'm started to feel a bit more coordinated. I got a cool new pair of boxing gloves. Check them out, you may discover something that scared you...you actually enjoy
