The Omulu Capoeira group is an international organization. The headquarters is located in the United States, in Los Angeles (California), directed by Mestre Preguiça, a student of the legendary Mestre Bimba. The mission of Omulu Capoeira is to promote the art of Capoeira around the globe through development of a high-quality training academy, a professional performance group, and a community culture and education program.
The Madison branch has been active since 1985.
Meet the Business Owner: Kelly and Faith S.
1. Kelly first experienced Capoeira while living in Brazil in 1994 and the combination of fluidity of movement, acrobatics, and music captured her interest. She began playing with the UW Madison Capoeira Group in 1997.
She has taught classes through the UW Madison Recreational Sports Program, Horizon Health & Fitness, the YMCA, the UW-Madison and currently at Kanopy Dance. In addition to Capoeira, Kelly has choreographed Samba and Frevo performances and taught various dance classes in the Madison area.
2. The music and movement of Capoeira first captured Faith's attention in 2005 while in Ecuador. The Omulu group in Madison has been a constant source of support and growth since 2006.
Capoeira has been an opportunity to challenge herself physically, express herself creatively, and connect with communities and friends locally and throughout the world. She loves to share her passion for movement and music with anyone interested in singing, dancing, playing, and learning with her.
