The park is closed off for safety reasons but we take a picnic and camp out on the lawn at the neighboring Staybridge Suites to watch the action up close. It's a super fun way to kick off your Fourth of July festivities (for whatever reason, Glendale's fireworks always happen a day or two before July 4th). Earlier this week it was announced that the highly anticipated Glendale Riverwalk Project will be put on hold http://www.bizjournals.com/denver/blog/real_deals/2015/04/175-million-development-planned-for-glendale.html?surround=etf&ana=e_article. Instead, a new retail and entertainment district called Glendale 180 will be developed on a 22 acre parcel between Colorado Boulevard and Cherry Street, and Virginia Avenue and Cherry Creek. The city plans to break ground in the Fall of 2015 and officials hope to open for business in 2017. And this will mean that Creekside Park is going away. I'm torn. It's truly a shame to lose a nice, big park. But Glendale and its neighbors will be gaining job opportunities and new fun recreational activities. As it stands now, the design is thoughtfully planned with lots of open space, year-round landscaping, and meandering pathways that will create an inviting community gathering place. No office or residential space will be included in the new development, just shops, restaurants, and a cinema. And lots of parking. And relaxed open container laws! Apparently, Glendale used to be quite the hot spot back in the day so it's planning to get back to its partytime roots. Glendale 180 - see what they did there? The final fireworks display in Creekside Park is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2015. I, for one, will be there to help send Creekside Park out with a bang. Yelp Review #400

Glendale's fireworks show is truly one of the best displays I've ever experienced. Popping a squat…read morein Creekside Park gives an exceptional up close and personal view of all the fireworks. I forgot about the joy of watching fireworks, it was like I was five years old all over again with a permanent grin plastered on my face. I hope Glendale decides to keep the Annual firework show going even after the new Glendale development goes up. I was impressed and awed by the whole evening. Thank you Vicki P. for showing me some of the best fireworks in Denver. Pro Tips for the optimal Firework experience: *Bring chairs (cup holders are a plus) *Bring a jacket or a blanket (it gets chilly in the evening) *Food + Libation = Fun times *Parking is a hot mess, I recommend parking at least a half mile away and walking so you don't get stuck in traffic when leaving with all the closed/blocked streets surrounding the area

Some parks check the boxes. Mission Viejo Park in Aurora actually earns them…read more Tucked inside the circular loop of South Mission Parkway, this is the kind of neighborhood park that surprises you -- bigger and more thoughtful than it first appears. Four baseball fields anchor the sports side of things, and a sprawling open field beyond them gives you real room to breathe: kite flying, pickup soccer, or just wandering with no destination in mind. Even on a gray, overcast day, the green holds its color and the whole place feels alive. The space-themed playground is the centerpiece for younger visitors -- and honestly, for older kids too. It's genuinely fun, not just functional, with multiple play structures, accessible rubber surfacing underfoot, and swing options for toddlers and bigger kids alike. Scattered throughout the park are standing rocks engraved with planets and space facts -- a nice touch that adds a little wonder to a walk. Some of them are showing their age from years of Colorado weather, but the idea behind them is solid and still sparks curiosity. Three covered gazebos with charcoal grills are spread across the park, making spontaneous cookouts easy. The paved walking and biking path loops the entire perimeter -- roughly a mile -- and connects to Aurora's broader trail network. Tollgate Creek runs along the western edge, adding a quiet, natural buffer to what is otherwise an active, well-used park. Parking is ample, and the grounds stay well-maintained. Best for families with kids of all ages, regular walkers and cyclists, and anyone who wants a full afternoon outside without driving far. It's the kind of place that becomes a weekly habit without you really planning for it to. Mission Viejo Park is free, open daily 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., and located at 3999 S. Mission Parkway, Aurora. If you haven't made it over yet, it's worth the trip -- rain or shine.
