Was in ER last night I expected to wait, brought in by ambulance there was a woman there that was going off walking back and forth for over an hour saying she had been there for more than 8 hours and they didn't even offer her soup or crackers lol at one point I wanted to order her a doordash just so she could stfu. The reason for my review was the cleanliness of the hospital or lack of,it was filthy and I cleaned professionally for years blood on the walls, urine on the floor of all the restrooms I used and it was at least 3 I kept going to different ones they were all filthy. I was put in room 11 and the floor was filled with hair, mud, pieces of plastic from things staff had used, They have't cleaned that room in a long time, I've never seen a hospital so filthy. I finally saw a a middle aged woman cleaning the restrooms after midnight she did a good job, I literally had to used wipes to wipe off the bottom of my shoes everytime I went to the restroom. read more

If you care about your health and have an emergency please please please do not bring yourself or your family here because most of them don't care. The Nurses and the attending who saw me didn't care. This apathetic doctor ignored my complaints and refused to attempt to resolve even one of my concerns. They will check you in but leave you in the room for hours even when the ER (emergency room) was basically empty. I also feel there are some racist individuals working there who don't have a heart. I reported them to multiple people including the patient advocate and I was tool I received Excellent care. The front desk staff is very rude and unprofessional. The security is not much better. Family was told they could not see their cancer patient family member unless they are dying. Hospital visitor guidelines do allow visitors to visit unless the patient has Covid. The doctors and nurses have been really nice. I just want to write a letter of apology. I'm sorry that my family and I were so rude to interrupt hospital employees Tweeting and their fun games of Candy Crush in order to ask for help. Being met with blank stares of annoyance from the staff was what we deserved. Also, sorry my mom, a recent stroke victim, asked to take a shower. She should be more understanding that a hospital would not have any clean towels. Not sure what she was thinking! My silly dad accidentally rang the nurse buzzer causing a mild stir. Can you believe someone would accidentally hit a button?! Craziness. I then witnessed my parents trying to decide who was to be the unlucky one to ring the buzzer and risk annoying the staff further with my mom's needs. Funny stuff. Funny stuff. Nurses told her to not get up on her own because she was a fall risk, yet when she would call the nurse to get help to the restroom, she waited 45 minutes to an hour each time. My condolences to the staff there as my mom should have thought to bring her own pee bucket along. And to the pregnant nurse who was helping my mom, again, a recent stroke victim, to the restroom, who decided to make a remark along the lines of, "don't fall because I'm pregnant and I can't help you." - thanks! Such a reasonable and polite thing to say to someone in need. Much appreciated! I recently went to your physicians center in Frankfort for a test. I can not get my results thru your chart link. I called and the girl said I can come back to pick them up and she sounded like she was sleeping. Told her I wont be using this location again and she said ok. They don't care. I also left a cardiologist a few years back because of his lack of follow up. Had a test and 6 months later told me i had 40% reduction in heart activity. Never read the report or called. I could have died. It was False reading on test , so then decided to see someone who was competent. Not much good I can say. read more

This is a nice-looking hospital with friendly staff, but it is sadly true that the ER is woefully ineffective. I arrived at 8-something p.m. on a Thursday and told them that I broke my hand. The waiting room was 90% empty. Triage went smoothly, and it took about an hour to get an x-ray and call for an orthopedist. Not great but not terrible. 3 hours later, the ER is almost completely empty. No orthopedist. Somebody who doesn't introduce himself wraps my broken hand. The nurse tells me that I'm discharged and should call the orthopedist in the morning to "follow up." I ask what he'll need to do to "follow up," and she says that he might give me a cast. See, the person who wrapped my arm wasn't the orthopedist. The orthopedist left me waiting with a broken hand for 3 hours (plus the hour it took to get the x-ray) and then never bothered to show up. In a total of 4 hours, I was lied to and never received any meaningful treatment. The worst part is that they didn't want to come clean and admit that they just totally wasted my time. And this is how they treat a person with comprehensive Blue Cross / Blue Shield insurance. I would've gotten better care as an uninsured person at Cook County Hospital. read more

I will never step foot into Franciscan Health in Michigan City. I went to the ER for heart palpitations. I went through all the cardiac tests. However, for some unknown reason, I was placed on 72 EOD. I was not told, neither was my husband. The ER Observation Nurse was extremely rude and unprofessional. She asked me, "If I become unconscious, you do not want us to revive you?" The only reason I can guess, is that I have an Advance Directive. Long story short, my time was wasted. I was billed for psychiatric treatment, that I never received. I have been trying for almost a year now for a response from the hospital. Trying to get my Medical Records, was another nightmare. Megan in the Medical Records is so rude. She clearly hates her job. The whole experience was a complete nightmare. I would NEVER suggest anyone go to this facility for treatment of any kind. read more

When I visited the Emergency Room in the fall of 2020, I had several concerns. No one properly registered me - they did not ask for my insurance information even though I was conscious and able to answer questions as well as retrieve documents. Because they did not ask for my insurance information, I later wasted a lot of time and aggravation on the phone with my insurance carrier. The other concern was that hospital staff were not wearing masks - in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. When I was put in the hall to make room for another patient, I observed several nurses walking in the hallway without wearing masks, and one nurse didn't seem to know how to properly wear her mask when she had it covering only her mouth and not her nose. Behind the nurse's partition, nurses took off their masks and used the phone without disinfecting it before another nurse used it. While I was in the hallway, a doctor walked down the hall with no mask. About five minutes later, he walked back - again without a mask. It is absolutely inexcusable that hospital staff are not following proper protocol with respect to COVID-19 precautions. I would not return here and would steer anyone I know away from this facility. read more

I have a relative here as a patient. Can't comment on personal care. It's convenient for them; living close by. My primary care doctor is here; part of the Franciscan network. Not too happy with their billing practices. Has anyone ever heard of being charged an 'administration fee' when getting a vaccination? It's like going to a restaurant to eat and getting a separate bill for them to prepare your meal. My advice: always question your charges beforehand. They will likely try to stick you with some fee that your insurance will reject as a bogus charge and the facility will try to pass it on to you. I'm just saying. The absolute WORST hospital care from start to finish starting in the ER no covid test pre-admission to hospital with heart issue? Minimal communication with staff if any in ICU for family members. If you do receive it, it will be rude, minus empathy, and short especially with RN named Fatima, as her patient care is subpar for patient bedside manner as well. Staff will not keep family posted post heart surgerical procedures? I would compare this kind of care (especially in these trying times of minus outsider presence pre-surgical procedures and no visitation due to Covid 19. Contact with family is imperative, I would equate this kind of patient/family treatment on the level with a poorly rated veterinary clinic. These are human beings and our loved ones. Listen up staff, a hospital is a business and we will take ours elsewhere, as I hope others read this review and this hospital will do better in the future as this is an affluent area and there is no reason for this patient care anywhere. My wife who has Alzheimer's was in the ER 12/13/20 11AM to approximately 12/14/20 at 11PM when she was transferred by ambulance to specialty hospital. For the first 8 hours I was allowed to be with her since I have recovered from COVID over a month ago and she has Alzheimers and cannot answer any questions regarding her health. I am the POA for health meaning I make all the decisions. While I was there I was able with some difficulty to get updated on what they planned to do. I did talk to the Doctor during the first day. Once I left I was not allowed back in the ER. The next day throughout the day I called to talk to the nurse never getting her or him on the phone. This was not acceptable since again, my wife cannot communicate what she needs. Finally at around 8PM the day of discharge I got through to a Nurses Aide who gave me a partial update and told me of the plan to discharge to the other facility that night. The problems with this hospital are; 1. lack of communication made more serious if you cannot be with your loved one and talk to staff even by phone. 2. no discharge papers which would have detailed what was done in the ER, the plan of care and test results and medications prescribed. 3. many patients screaming at the top of their lungs for the doctor or nurse for hours. Staff let them scream which makes it very difficult if you are forced to be near them, like in the next room. I will never go to this hospital or recommend it to anyone. read more

This place is not very good. Never a good sign when you see ER waiting room empty-people must know to stay away. Had extreme pain in right leg-probably sciatic nerve issue. They gave me something for pain and sent me for CT of back and leg. Doc said it was probably a herniated disc but cannot do MRI to see nerve damage because...... Well that was it-discharged with pain at 10 and now have to wait five days to get on to see Ortho. Why didn't they just do the MRI at the hospital?? The emergency room staff was quite accommodating. Although the practice is to have visitors remain outside the hospital as a mitigating step due to the pandemic, I was allowed to remain with my mother who is in the early stages of dementia. It was a busy night, which resulted in my mother having to wait in the hall for a room. A physician saw me standing and offered me chair withing minutes. I could overhear nurses conversing with patients with warmth and hospitality. The ER was clean, and the staff maintained a light hearted disposition despite the busy evening. read more

After reading so many bad reviews I couldn't wait to share a good experience. That good experience was quickly tainted by a call I received today from Mary in billing. First the good- I have had to have several tests in the past few weeks and the reception, scheduling and technicians have been professional , courteous and caring. Excellent customer service!!!! II couldn't ask for more. The bad- I have one last test scheduled in a week and it was preceded by a call today from Mary in billing. Besides letting me know my estimate share of the cost- she implied that I needed to have my full 20% in a week. She then said I needed to pay only a portion which is fine. The thing that really got me was that she said that she was letting me know because I had all of these old bills outstanding which I knew wasn't true because my tests have been recent and I havent received a bill old or new from Franciscan in months. She said all this without having looked anything up. I asked since she brought it up I'd wait until went further with then details. She then agreed that it looked like things that occurred this month. So here is my suggestion: 1) have detail and correctness before you call. Simply say we require a certain percentage of your co pay to be paid at the time of the test - is that something you can do? 2) extend your newfound customer service training to your billing staff... I hope the revised culture extends to all departments. read more

I had a test done to check my heart. It was like a sonogram. It took around 75 minutes. I checked in..no waiting. The tech came and got me 5 minutes later. He was friendly and put me at ease. It was fast and efficient. My results were on My Chart for my veiwing in 48 hours. I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience..start to finish. read more

I left to go to to ER approximately 12am, 3/3/19 because the drains that hold the fluid from the mastectomy that was leaking, but I wasn't in pain, but needed the hospital to re-do it so it wouldn't leak. Got to ER @12:30am, and we were seen immediately, they fixed it and showed me how to do it properly. Then told me and my husband that we could go, and they left to get discharge info. Then a lady comes in saying she wants to check my lungs. I asked why since I've been told to go home. She left out, and someone different came back asking me all kinds of questions as if I were crazy...What year is it? Why are you here? Why did you have a mastectomy?, What kind of cancer? When was chemo? This is the same hospital that the surgery was performed. That lasted for 2 hrs!! I was so pissed and exhausted!! They must've contacted my surgeon bcuz they suddenly decided that I could go, although we were about to walk out on our own. How could a hospital treat its own patients so horribly? I have never heard of a hospital that treats its patients this way. read more

Simply I will state my review .We had the front desk employees state that we should escalate my Wife's severity or we would sit for 8 or 9 Hrs and not even been given a simple EKG ??? The Doctor we finally received was excellent after a 6 Hour wait but why the Attitude of the Non Medical Idiots at the front Desk ? So this is the Breakdown 2 Hours after you arrive You get a Test . Then 3 Hours later you'll get another Test Blood Labs ? I wish I could give no stars, this hospital literally has one of the worst emergency departments I've ever visited. I waited at least 5 1/2 to 6 hours for evaluation of an abscess. I can understand making sicker patients a priority, however there were people who were normal, did not appear in a wheelchair the way I did, and got seen before me. I checked in at midnight, didn't get a room til the sun rose. When they finally placed me, my room didn't have a bed! Just a recliner and a fold chair. Really? I'm only this upset because I have worked in the emergency room before, never have I seen an establishment so unorganized! By the way, I waited an ADDITIONAL 1.5 hours in my room (7:30am) without so much as seeing a nurse! I wobbled to the nurses station and asked what was going on, and they told me they put me in a different side of the ED and wasn't going to have a doctor til 8:30!!!!! Are you kidding me?? Was anybody going to tell me? I ended up leaving WITHOUT BEING SEEN and told them not to bill my insurance. I will be filing a formal complaint with corporate. read more

My mom has been here for 5 days on the 2900unit and it's been a very pleasant experience. The nursing staff I've dealt with were just wonderful and caring. The cna's are eager to help (what!). Most of the doctors read all my medical notes and were happy to answer my questions. The social work department is awesome. I was hesitant to keep my mom here, due to the reputation of St. James in Chicago Heights, but this place is a totally different scene. The quality of the staff here is amazing. A special thanks to CNA Kelly, SUPER NURSE FADI, nurse Angela, social worker Danielle, palliative care's Theresa and all the wonderful workers who's names I didn't catch. You are really good people. Also, for the catholic school kids - the nuns here are the nice kind, so don't be afraid. ;) I do hear creepy, scary things about billing, so I'll update my review when all the bills have been dealt with. read more

My third time to this hospital in 5 years and this time it was horrible! I went to the ER on Monday 9/10 with chest pain (I am a cardiac patient). Seems that the Chicago Hts facility was merged into this facility the previous Saturday. There were not enough rooms in the ER for the amount of patients at 10 am! I was taken into triage, had blood drawn and an ekg and then sent back to the waiting area, told if the pain got worse to go back to the front desk! It got worse however both times I spoke up over 2 hours, the desk person disappeared until finally they got to me. I had asked for nitrostat each time to help relieve the chest pain, never got it until 2 more hours passed... 2 pm! Didn't see a cardiologist until the following morning even though additional tests were ordered (echo cardiogram and stress test). Finally saw a cardiologist around 9 am in the nuclear medicine department as I was having the stress test. Having had 6 bypasses over 18 years ago, I'm a high risk patient. So, having experienced chest pain and tightness during the stress test, a decision was made that I would have an angiogram. Sent back to the temporary unit. Eventually I was told the procedure would happen at 4, so I called family so they could see me before. Not more than 10 minutes later they wheeled me into the cath lab to prep... it was 3:10... After the procedure and recovery period, I was told they were taking me to another unit. After 3 days total I was released, having seen the cardiologist once before the procedure and during the procedure. A floor doctor came in and gave me the results of the angiogram. Very poor administration. Some of the staff excelled while others, including the ER staff were ticked that they were moved from Chicago Hts to this facility. Really??? Be glad you still have a job! And don't take out your frustrations on the patients. I'll be going back to Advocate South Suburban in the future for any ER trips. St James has lost my confidence. read more

I have had so many bad occurrences at this organization over the years from short staffing to serious breaches in hygiene and safety protocols. But this recent incident really took the cake. This occurred at their ER on a Sunday afternoon and I hope this review will help others. I have come to realize that this is an organization that is good on signage but poor on practice. I am an older adult with serious health considerations. I've been sheltering in for 14 months out of fear. I have not set foot in a store nor have I seen family at all. I was told that prior to my surgery I had to have a mandatory Covid test and it was not optional even though I was fully vaccinated. I go to the designated testing place and the young lady had on a very loose fitting mask no shield and I asked her by the way are you vaccinated and she said no I have chosen not to. Now one would think that a medical organization in a community where there is the highest spread in the state would have someone assigned to this task who is vaccinated or at the very least shielded. I asked if there was personnel available vaccinated that could administer my swab and she made a call and came back and said no. OK I'm not getting tested today. So I left and I called the nursing supervisor at the hospital she was very pleasant and she said she agreed with my request she found it valid and said to go to the ER this time give my name and someone from the lab who is vaccinated would run over and do my test. I get to the ER and right away I know I'm being targeted- they are whispering and looking up at me and then some horrible woman comes out with coworkers observing and lectures me about Hyppa law and I'm not allowed to ask who's vaccinated. I said I haven't asked I don't need to ask this has been prior arranged but she just wouldn't let up. She followed me back to the room with the young lady giving the swab while continually pushing up her ill-fitting mask continuing to barrage me with we have rights etc. etc. I said would you please leave so I could get this test safely and be on my way. On my way out down the narrow hallway there is some woman with her arms crossed and a security person at this point I thought what's going on. She starts on me again and says "you know when you have surgery next Wednesday you're not gonna know who is vaccinated and who isn't." My teeth almost fell out the only thing holding them in was my N95 mask. i hadn't mentioned this to them. Then she said some thing about I'll bet you go shopping and go out and you think we're not safe. (Well no I've gone nowhere!) In my whole life I've never been treated like this now I'm scared that the very place that supposed to keep people safe gave me Covid. I'd be safer going out to eat or to the supermarket then being in this room with her shouting at me over her saggy mask . On my way out she followed me into the lobby she said you know the governor said we don't have to have masks. She's a hospital ER person there's a sign outside how is this even relevant?? This woman was unprofessional and clearly had a political ax to grind. I would like to add that at every doctor appointment recently and at my hospital labs I was asked are you vaccinated I've even had them ask to make copies of my vaccination card! I have been coming here for years and have never had a BAD/AWFUL experience, ER always see you in a timely fashion I've never had a long wait time. On the units the staffing could benefit from more customer service training (My pet peeves is to be called honey/baby/sweetheart other than my name) infection control need to be addressed also. I had a wonderful PCT upon admission named Chavon, I was in room 2501. She was attentive and professional, my nurses Kristen and Destiny was wonderful as well. read more

Both of my parents have been in here for almost a week as admitted patients. Once on the floor it was a long confused process the first day. Throughout the week there were some good nurses and there were some here taking up space. The other day there was a nurse sitting behind their nurses station acting like she was entering things in the computer. What she was actually doing was texting on her cell phone. This went on for at least 45mins. There were call lights alarming all around her. She completely ignored all the alarms and kept typing on her cell phone. I wish I got her name, she was pretty young, thinner and had black. There are many resident doctors here. I think it's a teaching hospital. I have no problem with that, but I seldom see the main doctors except when their doing there rounds. The resident doctors practically gave my mom to much pain killer that she was totally unresponsive. Luckily my brother checked on her to find her unresponsive. If it wasn't for him she would have gone in respiratory arrest. The bottom line the staff of nurses are slim they work the whole wing and are overworked. The pct are the same, a lot of them have attitudes. As do some nurses. If we ever need future medical care I will do everything in my power to avoid St. James Hospital. read more

Their ER is completely ineffective. I recently brought my son into the ER fearing he'd broken his foot. Triage was quick but the service thereafter was awful. One of the interns took a look at his foot and was confident it was not broken but wanted to get xrays. She, however, needed the attending physician to take a look. We waited for an hour for him. He took three minutes and was out the door, promising we'd be taken to xray shortly. Another hour went by. A nurse then told us he hadn't signed the paperwork to have us sent to xray. He was in the midst of a trauma and would "get to it soon" Okay, fair enough. We waited another hour before getting an xray. Then, after, the intern came back and said no broken bones and that she'd have the attending sign off on a release and get a prescription. We waited for two hours. The nurses kept saying he was in a trauma. They then revealed that he was the only non-intern on duty! There were patients in other beds that were in far more pain waiting to be seen so I can't complain about our wait as much as they could. But still. Come on. Eventually, we witnessed the intern hand him my son's chart, he signed without looking and we were released. Sigh. read more

Great ER, immediate attention, clean, thorough exams, great communication by all attending staff. Recently arrived with my husband unable to walk because of weakness in his left leg developing after experiencing extreme pain in his upper back. I was attended to immediately, by security and attending staff, with a bed, to wheel him into the ER. He received immediate attention and was put through a barrage of tests for life threatening issues. Heart attack, stroke, blood clot etc. Communication by each attending staff member was thorough and informative. I really appreciate the line of communication by all staff as well as our primary doctor. Great hospital experience would recommend to all. read more

Would not recommend this hospital to anyone, staff sucks nurse station @2500 could care less if you complain. Trust me you could fall in you're room and would be left there for hours .
