When Claude Troisgros arrived in Brazil in 1979 it seems hard to believe he had plans to build an empire, but forty years later the legendary Chef and his son, Thomas, now own six Restaurants plus a catering Atelier, the most famous of which has been called Olympe since 2005. Originally opened in 1983, then as Restaurant Claude Troisgros before a name change honoring the Chef's late-Mother, it is at Rua Custódio Serrão 62 that guests will find a brick house holding one Michelin Star, the interior dimly let and intimate with staff that exudes professionalism. Offering both a la carte and tasting menus, the latter carte blanche save for allergies and intolerances, it is immediately upon seating at linen-clad tables that a Wine List is presented, several French bottles at fair prices popular amongst others while the lack of non-alcoholic options and Cocktails was surprising. Built on Brazilian Ingredients, but steeped in French elegance, it is with Bread service that most tables begin their evening, a duet of crisp Tapioca and cheesy Baguette each delicious with or without imported Butter while a follow-up Amuse of Foie Gras delivered a delicious balance of flavors in one bite. Drawing inspiration from the main menu, but not replicating any of its plates across seven courses to follow, dish one consisted of hand-cut Wagyu draped in Pork Fat with sweet and savory accoutrements, each bite a little different than that prior, though all were rich in a way that continued on with Butter-poached Slipper Lobster, local Mushrooms and Asparagus. Undeniably French cooking, though global influences are frequent, course three presented unsealed Ravioli with Potatoes and Yogurt in the middle, the addition of Balsamic and Pine Nuts creating something far greater than thus sum of its parts while Seabass with Beans and Fennel was perfectly cooked but otherwise fairly basic. Only seating four tables on this particularly rainy evening, service thus hovering at times, it was not long before a 63 Egg was offered beneath Farofa and Cauliflower, a tableside pour of peerless Bordelaise bringing otherwise common Ingredients up a notch just as fermented Manioc Root Juice did a slice of Domestic Ribeye with Pommes Aligot and a Tapioca crisp. Eschewing Troisgros famous Passionfruit Souffle Pancake for Dessert, a Parfait of Chocolate and Ginger served in its place, dinner came to a conclusion with four Mignardises, the R$475 price not a bad value but overall lacking the excitement of other Michelin-starred South American Restaurants. read more

We were told this was a top 50 restaurant in Rio and had a Michelin star, so we saved it for a special occasion. Laided for French chef Claude Troigros' ingenuity, it combines French cuisine with Brazilian flavor. On a remote street in Jardim Botanical, closer to lagoa, you can find this modern, romantic, quaint restaurant, quite quiet at 7:30pm but nearly a full house by 8:30pm. Service was as expected for a place of this class, someone to greet us as we got out of a cab, a hostess to acknowledge the only reservation for that time, a table distinctly reserved by a solid polish rock sitting in the corner of the table, staff to refill water glasses and replace silverware for the next course, wine properly presented and poured at intervals (if you ordered a bottle), someone to call a taxi before we finished our dessert, etc. Although professional, it definitely helps to know how to communicate in Portuguese because I think English would be quite limiting. We ordered the chef's selection or confiança menu which included 6 small dishes and a dessert. We also ordered the Zacapa mojitos since we recently traveled to Guatemala and a French red wine (they had only a few by the glass) for drinks. We finished with green tea which came with four small dessert bites. They also offer a la carte and a creative menu (pick 4 from their menu) and a chef's pairing (dishes with wine selection paired). The dishes were all had excellent presentation and unique flavors and creativity. We started with a frothy mushroom soup which was simple but excellent. The first dish was a sashimi piece of tuna with a beet paste and topped with crunchy quinoa. It had exquisite taste and texture. The second dish was squid- the tentacles fried and body seared with a sweet spicy sauce. The third dish was lobster Ina buttery vanilla sauce (almost dessert like) over a bed of overly salted potato crisps. The fourth dish was another white mild fish with crispy skin in a bouillon broth and honey picked carrots. It was cooked well but lacked the inventive flavors of the previous dishes. The fifth dish was presented like linguini but was a cooked vegetable with a cheese sauce and grated Parmesan. The last dish was a shredded beef roll with topped dried meat. The beef had the consistency of a soft pâté and for me was not appetizing. Perhaps they showcased their best dishes first but flavor seemed to decline as the menu progressed. The meat dish was my least favorite and I was unable to finish it. Dessert was a lovely display of ripe berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries) on a bed of chocolate crumble with a raspberry sauce and scoop of ice cream, flecked in gold foil. I ordered a cup of tea since they do not have espresso and it came with a slate of four petit dessert bites. A roasted coconut covered soft marshmallow, a layer cake topped with salted caramel (my favorite), a Madeleine, and chocolate covered cornflakes. The meal was as expected in price, since they are transparent with their menus online which lists prices so one can plan ahead. Overall, a nice place to get a fancy meal. We would like to try some of their other dishes. read more

Gourmet French restaurant from chef brothers Claude and Thomas Troisgros, located in the Lagoa area of Rio de Janeiro. Olympe offers an upscale, elegant gourmet experience, mixing traditional French cuisine with a twist if Brazilian flavors. My dinner experience started with a Zacapa Mojito which was rather disappointing. There was no outstanding flavor, I would've preferred a regular Mojito and a Zacapa on the side to enjoy by itself. This restaurant offers three different Menú Dégustation and an a la carte option. The dégustation options are the following: create your own (choose 4 dishes and dessert), follow the chef's suggestion (chef chooses 4 dishes and dessert for you) and a vegetarian option. Prices range between 200-300 reais per person for the degustation options. My experience at Olympe only went uphill after the poor Mojito. Each one of the following five plates (4 + dessert) was a true tasting experience. For starter, we had the grilled scallop and also the scallop ceviche (see pictures). Both were marvelous, very delicate and unique flavor. Absolute hit! Second course was my absolute favorite: TRUFFLE RISOTTO! I have tried truffle risotto in many many top restaurants around the world and I can confidently say this has been among the best I've ever tried. If you are a risotto fan, this is a must! For a third course I tried the duck. This was accompanied by a sweet-sour sauce (which its key ingredient I can't recall) and was very pleasant. I consider myself a duck fan and Olympe's duck was very nice. For my fourth course I had an aged rib eye, slowly cooked 48 hours, and accompanied by a sweet sauce made mostly out of some sort of white bean (or at least that's what the waiter's English gave me). Overall it was good, not fabulous, however not my kind of steak. For dessert I tried a "trio": creme brûlée, dulce-de-leche filled pastry and a chocolate pudding with red pepper cream. Dessert was amazing, great mix of flavors to produce a delicate desert offer. We had an overall excellent experience and would definitely call this restaurant a 5 star. Excellent service, good wine list, superb food quality, simple and elegant dish presentation and wonderful flavors. To make our experience even more outstanding, Chef Claude Troisgros visited our table, sat with us for a few minutes and had a very nice chat with us. He also gave us a tour of his kitchen and was pleased to hear our impressions. Kudos for chef Claude and his creations at Olympe! We went here to celebrate a special occasion and opted for the 6-plate chef's selection menu. The new started with a mushroom soup appetizer, followed by six main plates, and ending with a desert. Unfortunately, of the six plates, five were fish and only one (probably the weakest of the six in terms of flavor and creativity) was meat. In general though, the restaurant was very nice. The dishes were each unique and presented in an appealing fashion. The drink selection is good as well, featuring a large list of wines and some special cocktails. We opted for the Zacapa mojitos, which came mixed with champagne as well as all the other normal mojito ingredients. The restaurant is rather pricy, but if you're looking for a special night out and some good food, give it a shot. read more

The evening was truly magical as we stepped out of our cab in the rain and were greeted by hosts with umbrellas to usher us into the restaurant. Upon entry, the warm, intimate setting was enticing and I was prepared for a delicious meal; and it was entirely divine. My friend and I each chose different dishes and spilt the entire meal to double the courses, which worked out very well. The service was excellent, and champagne refills from the waiter were on point. The scallop ceviche was sublime and probably my favorite dish: notes of lavender were out of this world. Also notable, the popcorn butter lobster tail and spicy crisps that are refilled throughout the meal. Each course felt delicately prepared and were entirely elegant, and for the price well worth it. What a fantastic restaurant. We got off to a bit of a rocky start because we do not speak Portuguese. Although they do have an English version of the menu, you do need to figure out how to communicate with the waitstaff, who are excellent and very sweet when you are struggling with the language. We all did our best and we managed to place a very successful order. We started with the ravioli which melts in your mouth and tastes a bit like movie theater popcorn lunch with pine nuts. Then I had quail with some sort of delicious green and braised cabbage. It was divine. My husband loved his shrimp risotto. Desserts were tops. The passion fruit crepe is creamy with a bit of a crunch all at once. In terms of ambience, try to book your table for 9 o'clock. That's when the restaurant starts to get moving. This Michelin-rated place is not to be missed if you are in Rio. read more
