I'm always on the hunt for folks doing interesting things in our neck of the woods, and now and…read morethen I stumble across them! I mentioned to my husband that I was working on a design issue for The E List and he said, "Hey, a guy I ride with is a European upholsterer, you should look him up". Well, that was somewhat of an understatement. Mark Bijleveld and his wife Susan own Finished in Fabric. At fourteen, Mark began his apprenticeship in upholstery learning the trade in his uncle's workroom in the Netherlands. His training was authentic old school, involving things like hand-tied springs, straw, and horsehair. The Bijleveld's settled in Haddam and added a workroom to their property. There, Mark plies his expert hand to upholstery, reupholstery and antique restoration (that's where the horse hair comes in!), while Susan whips up drapes, pillows, and custom bedding and handles the interior design end of the business. Mainly the couple works "to the trade," but they take on private clients, too. New York designers rely on them for high-end homes, and their work has appeared in Architectural Digest and New England Home magazine. They can execute a design project from start to finish, whether it's building new furniture from scratch to your specifications, or reupholstering that old chaise with good bones. Susan is happy to accompany you to her favorite "to the trade only" secret, Design Source CT in Hartford, for everything from Old World Weavers & Brunschwig & Fils fabrics, to furniture, drapery hardware, and lighting. I've had a swath of cherished hand-printed (read expensive) material for years that I've been meaning to use for a couple of pillows. Now I know where to go.

I found this place on Yelp after I picked up a "free" chaise lounge. It is perfect for bedroom and…read morephotography prop. I knew I couldn't just take home because the item was heavy as heck and if I took home I would put off and procrastinate. Wilson is centrally located on Washington ave north haven. Owner graciously met me downstairs, removed item from my car and took the time to inspect the item and point out the "gem" I procured as he compared my lounge to the "prefab won't-last-five-years chaise lounges of today. He asked questions on where the item will be stored (high traffic va low traffic areas of home) and when i answered he provided a plethora of fabrics to consider. Most importantly, he did NOT expect full payment that day! Whew!! What a relief. Starting a new business is expensive so not having to make full payment before work commenced made my day. Chair is absolutely a transformation. Comfortable and I can't wait to use as a prop. Love the oatmeal color I chose.

The years had not been kind to the chair, fabric needed to be replaced, padding worn and arm of the chair completely broken. Rich was great from start to finish. He was able to help us find the right fabrics and bring life back to the chair - looks good as new and still holds that antique quality they just don't make anymore! And a family heirloom should now see more generations to come. Thanks again Rich! Service and Skill are top notch. Rob

BUYER BEWARE. I have never written a negative review for any business of any kind but the way I…read morewas taken advantage of by Jhon and Scott at Tailored Home is so outrageous, I need to warn people about how they operate. I am a designer and stumbled into their store, really impressed and excited to have a working relationship with them. I ordered a custom side table, custom barstools and curtains. As a designer, I absolutely could have taken their suggested fabrics and design and done the barstools and curtains myself for a lot less money. Their mark up even to with "a discount" was 40% on the fabrics. That was easy enough for me to check since I have design accounts. But doing that would be unethical since I truly appreciated the suggestions from Jhon. February 2023: I give 100% payment for the curtains and am promised these will be done by April 23 when I have a large event and it would be nice to have the curtains. April 2023: Jhon tells me that one of the two fabrics in the curtains in backordered until June, but he has the other fabric. I tell him I will buy the fabric from him or pay a restock fee because I can't wait until June and already have another fabric, I can get ASAP and have my curtain installer finish the job in time. Jhon and Scott's response was to give me a store credit for both fabrics (even though one fabric was not even paid for yet since it is on backorder), credit for the labor (even though the fabrics were not made) and no credit for the installation (even though I paid for that in full and there was no installation). I paid $5,571.18 for the curtains that were never made. They said the best they could do was give me a store credit for $4,405.55. How does someone refuse to refund you for product and services not yet bought or performed? So beware that even if they are unable to fulfill an order but you have trusted them by giving payment in full, they will not refund you at all. They will keep 100% of your money and force you to use that money in their store. I spent more than $10,000 in their store on products I could have don't myself for a lot less money, but I did the right thing by not "stealing" their ideas and doing it myself. I hoped for a long relationship and respected them for their design style. They clearly have no respect for their customers.

My husband and I were in need of a complete home make-over this summer and could not have been…read morehappier with the wonderful insight we were provided with by Jhon and The Tailored Home. We re did our entire entry way and living room as well as new drapes for all windows and custom furniture. We were somewhat worried about the time frame of our request...given we host birthday parties, special events, and family gatherings, however the process was quicker than we expected and are so excited with the outcome. They exceeded our expectations. Suggesting them to all of our close friends and relatives! This place is amazing!
