Being so happy with her care from Sea Otter class to Penguin class, we chose to enroll our youngest as soon as we could as well. We've spent the last 3 years with Challenge and just had the joy of seeing our daughter graduate and be ready for K. Reflecting on how we chose to enroll initially, I did extensive research and tours of the Mandarin immersion programs local to Fremont in 2020/2021. Challenge, despite it being on a somewhat non-traditional school campus, was the best choice to us. I appreciated the smaller teacher:student ratios. After starting, it was also really clear that there was a good balance of schedule/routines but also new topics introduced to the students over time. Personally a big fan of project based learning (PBL) which is broadly what the curriculum follows. My impressions were that the preschoolers are introduced early and exposed frequently to letters and numbers and my oldest has naturally grown curiosity in reading - this is super important to me - as opposed to a rigorous academic environment. We're very happy with the experience at Challenge. So much so that although we are moving to the Peninsula, we'll actually be transferring to another campus for my youngest to keep up with the great experience we've had with the overall Challenge program.

I attended Giraffe Learning Center years ago, and I only have good things to say about it. My experience was quite positive, and while I was there, they provided an array of extracurricular activities, as well as a conducive environment for me to learn. I do believe my academics improved because of the extra tutoring I got from the teachers and TAs. I also feel like the packets we had to complete were reasonable in terms of the workload and difficulty level. If I ever needed help, the teachers guided me in a patient manner. There were a few students who gave the teachers a hard time, but I can confidently say I have NEVER witnessed Ms. Yin (the principal) or the staff being mean nor abusive to the students. They might have seemed strict to some, but I saw it as tough love. Giraffe provided an environment to have fun, but they focused heavily on education. It's typically hard to get kids to do things like homework because they usually just want to play. This could be why some students might have not enjoyed their time at Giraffe as much. Now that I'm older, I am more appreciative of the structure and discipline Giraffe embodied because of the good habits that I built. You can definitely tell the staff cared about the students a lot and wanted the best for them. Money is what drives them and if your child has any kind of special need, they'd rather protect their profit and throw your kid out. My child has ADHD, was strongly suspected but undiagnosed at the time they attended this particular branch. The school didn't know how to handle it... Rather than working with us to see how they could support our child better, they stalled us; delaying meetings for one reason or another for weeks. We hired a behaviorist and a therapist, all of whom were more than happy to collaborate with the staff there to help our child cope. They would have none of it, and instead of helping it severely delayed our child's learning of any coping mechanisms. They often singled our child out, made them feel like a "bad" kid, which made our child question their self-worth. The end result is that when they finally agreed to a meeting, they did it under the pretense that they were open to working with us and our child, but in reality they sandbagged us at the virtual meeting and threw our child out of their school. Certainly they have their policies which we respect but the WAY they threw us out, under the guise of being "helpful" was truly indecent of them. I would rather they had been straight with us, we could have saved ourselves the effort and gone to a better school. Ultimately we DID find a better place nearer to our home where they were empathetic and highly qualified to handle children with cognitive behavioral difficulties. So if you strongly suspect your child might also have these special needs, stay away from Montessori Learn and Play. There are other vastly more qualified preschools in the area though they seem to have a monopoly here in Fremont. But seriously, take your time and do some research. Coincidentally, later on we did encounter one of their previous leadership staff in another caretaker setting, who had been tasked with giving us the boot at Learn and Play. I hadn't recognized them until later, but they ended up being great with our kid, the same kid they had thrown out years prior. It made it crystal clear to me that the personnel isn't so much to blame as the corporate machinations that drive this chain of schools...
