Tonight, on my second evening in Rome, I visited Nuovo Mondo. Our Airbnb host recommended that we…read morevisit as, in his opinion, it is the best pizzeria in Testaccio, our neighbourhood for five days. Based on our visit, I've no doubt that many locals would say just the same thing. - The Nuovo Mondo was absolutely packed out! There's a reason this simple, unassuming pizzeria is so popular. Just a heads up: Whilst NM is popular, it is off the beaten tourist track. - The menu is in Italian and the waiter who served us spoke very little English. So, reading the menu was fun! Just how could I not order the Nuovo Mondo pizza? Whatever it was, it had to be good to have earned the restaurant's name as its own. So, with no idea what I'd be presented with, the Nuovo Mondo it was. The atmosphere is an energetic, lively one; infectiously so. The waiters and the kitchen staff do not stop; everybody is working so hard. That's clear from the speed with which the pizza travels from oven to table. The wait for food was an entertaining one. - Just sitting in view of the bustling open kitchen had me giddy. There was excited chatter across the restaurant; such a great atmosphere. We were hungry after such a busy day, and hungrier still because everything around us looked torturously delicious. No sooner was the Nuovo Mondo mystery revealed in the form of a perfectly thin and crisp base topped with mozzarella, onions and tuna. Now, this may not sound like a mix of toppings that will blow your mind, but I can assure you that this was one heck of a winning combination. I was so glad that I'd gone for the special pizza, it did not disappoint. - Pizza perfection! I also had some of my friend's mushroom and prosciutto pizza and it was wonderfully delicious too. The pizzas were very reasonably priced at €9 each. Considering just how busy the restaurant was, service was fast and friendly. Our waiter was charismatic and attentive. Despite the number of diners, we never once felt forgotten or disregarded. When I emptied my purse of all my coins to tip him, he laughed. - He really did deserve it! Nuovo Mondo was so authentic; a genuine slice of Italy, and a truly memorable experience in Rome.

On our first night in Rome, my wife and I stumbled upon II Grottino dal 1936, literally steps from our Airbnb. At first I we thought about passing because the line stretched down the street, but then decided..."when in Rome"...and joined the line. Best decision we could have made. The wait turned out to be relatively short and also part of the fun. Watching guests duck inside to grab a beer to enjoy while waiting in line was special. Also the atmosphere was lively with friends and family greeting each other with smiles, laughter, and a lot of hugs. Tons of locals...always a good sign. The owner was a one-man show greeting everyone, welcoming us like family. Next he was off bussing tables, delivering food, and still made time to stop for a chat. You could instantly feel like this was a true family-run place. Once inside, we loved the cozy decor and welcoming vibe. The menu was surprisingly extensive, with plenty of choices. We ordered a bottle of Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which was refreshing and paired perfectly with our food. It was nice that a few of the staff spoke enough English to help us navigate the menu, which was a nice touch. We shared a sausage pizza first...think, crunchy, and perfectly balanced with sauce and cheese. Then came the star...the carbonara. Absolutely packed with flavor, not heavily sauced, and just clean and delicious. We ended the meal with a pour of grappa, the perfect night cap. All in all, this was a fantastic first meal in Italy. Prices were very reasonable, the food was excellent, and the experience unforgettable. Don't let the long line scare you off - this one is worth the wait.

Prati is our hood in Rome, and we were craving pizza after several days of pasta upon pasta. La…read morePratolina is a Prati stalwart and was filled with an eclectic group of people on a Friday night in February. The expansive rooms were filled with locals of all ages and all persuasions. Interestingly, not once did I feel old, or was I treated any differently because of my age, during ten days in Rome. That does not happen in the United States. La Pratolina serves an Ancient Rome inspired pizza called Pinsa. It's hand-stretched into an oval shape, using a mix of soy, rice, and wheat flour with a high water content, resulting in a crust that is very light, airy inside, and crispy on the outside. We found our two pizzas unique and delicious. Packed at 10:30 at night, the staff had to be efficient and ran around, working hard, serving people in the several rooms and outside. They didn't have time to gab until close to closing, and then our female server was very charming answering my questions with aplomb. La Pratolina has great pizza and reasonable prices. It's as authentic as anything you'll find in Italy. I love Prati, and La Pratolina represents its hood well.

She was patient with us as we poured over the menu. The restaurant is quaint and nicely decorated inside. The outside seating is beautiful as well. We decided to sit outside since it was a nice day in May. The wine was great. The squash blossom was an experience but I like less batter in order to taste the delicate flower. The pizza was amazing. Can I order another to go right now? The crust is light and crispy. You have to try it to believe how good it is. How could I have so little time in Rome that I didn't get a chance to eat a proper meal here. There will be a next time, that is for sure.

Service was excellent and prices were cheap due to not being near any tourist attractions. It was about €20 for two people We split a bruschetta and a pizza. It was very tasty and the pizza had four distinct sections so it was like we got to try four different pizzas. Definitely recommend if you want a cheap meal that's still delicious.

After exploring the city for quite a while, I was looking for a good lunch spot. Lo Zozzone was…read morerecommended by my friend so I made my way there as it was in the area. A pro trip for most touristy countries is to avoid restaurants that are close to very popular attractions or town squares. They are likely going to be overpriced. If you go off of the unbeaten path a bit, you will likely be rewarded. Ambiance (4/5): Lo Zozzone is a quaint restaurant with some cool decor everywhere. Unlike most restaurants in Italy, which are all about al fresco dining, Lo Zozzone is an indoors experience. The tables are close to each other and to the walls so it can get a bit cramped but that's my only complaint. Service (3.5/5): Typical European service. A bit slow, a bit inattentive, but acceptable. You may have to grab your waiter's attention here and there but you'll make it. Food (3/5): Lo Zozzone is known for their Roman-style stuffed pizza which is a bit deceiving as it's basically a sandwich and not pizza. They have a huge menu with various toppings and sauces and such. It'll be served warm on thick, focaccia bread and it will be filling. And moderately priced at that. I went with the prosciutto and sun-dried tomatoes which made a nice combo. Just a sandwich in my book so not spectacular but it did the job. Drinks (4/5): I had a soft drink so not much to write about here. If you're looking for a restaurant with some character and you'd like to try some food that Rome is known for, Lo Zozzone is a good choice. I wonder how their non-sandwich/stuffed pizza options fare.

I like to experience small local spots when I travel and this place looked so magical I had to go in. The food here is delicious. Some of the best pizza I have had around Rome. It's tasty, and light. Very flavorful! I couldn't get enough. Unfortunately they didn't have pasta available this evening so I wasn't able to try that, but it just gives me a reason to try it next time I am in town. The decor is adorable, very eclectic and reminds me of eating in someone's kitchen. It's so cute and lots of fun things to look at on the walls. The wait staff is very kind, and attentive which is not always the case in Italy but you have it here. This place was wonderful and I will add to my must do when in Rome list for sure.
