A long view to the west.
Sunset is often beautiful in West Yellowstone. We drove west to the edge of town, and came to the abandoned Old West Yellowstone Airport, west of Iris Street, between US-20 Firehole Ave and Madison Ave. The unnamed unmarked jeep trail a few feet north of the gravel Old Airport Road is flat and fairly smooth. We drove west just past a sparse grove of pines, where an old unpaved runway gives a view towards the horizon. The GPS said 44°39'40.6"N, 111°07'03.5"W.
Sunset was excellent. The location was dark and quiet. There were a couple of cars nearby, but they seemed empty, maybe ATV's or dirt-bikes out for a spin. We saw no police this time, though they were often parked after dark off US-20 Firehole Ave at Iris, near the West Yellowstone sign. read more
