A traditional and very old pub with excellent food.
Looking for a bite to eat on a Sunday evening, we tried this old pub which had been a favourite haunt of an old friend. Friendly service and good beer were complemented by some fine food, possibly a little pricey for a pub but well worth it. Breaded mushrooms and breaded whitebait for starters were in plentiful supply and went down well; the grilled gammon also disappeared with some speed though by this time my companion was flagging and had to leave some chips. I did better, my sirloin steak being one of the best I've ever eaten tender, succulent and cooked exactly as I like it, a little to the rare side of medium rare. I was eventually defeated though, and also had to leave some of the splendid chips despite my best efforts not to.
Added to a couple of pints of rather nice beer, George Gale's 'Seafarers' bitter', this all made for a very pleasant evening. Definitely somewhere to visit again if I'm in the area. read more
