She was very knowledgeable about Wright and Russell and Ruth Kraus who the house was built for and the only residents. The Kraus house is one of the very few Wright houses that have not been remodeled and contains the original furniture designed by Wright. It has a cozy feel from the time you walk inside. I was intrigued by the esthetic design throughout the home.

We didn't know if we could get on the tour that day so we first stopped by to see it and take some pictures. We met an intern and found out that we could get in on a tour about 2 hours later. So we paid our fee and went to see Frank Lloyd Wright's mentor, Louis Sullivan's Wainwright Building in downtown St. Louis. I believe this is one of Sullivan's best work still standing. When we returned for the tour I was stunned. This is a great, late house by Wright that has many magical and playful elements to it. It's has most of the original furnishings and something totaling unexpected in a Usonian house--art glass windows. The tour guide was new and did an excellent. Everyone involved in this project should be very proud of the work they've done, and continue to do.

The oldest brick house in Illinois (completed in 1810 after three years of construction) is…read moreavailable for tours, 3 days a week (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). Be sure to go to the Old Cahokia Courthouse (on 1st and Elm) on any of those days, or visit the website. It is part of the Colonial Cahokia State Historic Sites complex. Visitors from all around, as well as from outside the United States, have toured this restored mansion. You will learn a lot about the architecture at the time, along with how the house was put together - which included a lot of the technologies at the time (1800s). You'll also learn plenty about the man, Nicholas Jarrot, who was a French prince who escaped the French Revolution to come to America and start a new life. He was very wealthy, so he owned plenty of the land surrounding present day-Cahokia. Jarrot and his wife and son slept upstairs, while his slaves were in the cellar. There's lots I can share but the tour guide will provide a lot of information surrounding the family and why they were important to the area. If you are into local history, or even the history of Illinois, I strongly recommend touring the house, along with the Old Cahokia Courthouse and Church of the Holy Family (located two doors down from the mansion).

An underground station on the Blue Line of the Saint Louis Metrolink, Skinker is located at the…read morenorthwest corner of Forest Park. If you're coming from the Shrewsbury end of the Blue Line, this is a convenient stop for accessing Delmar Loop without going to Forest Park station and waiting for a Red Line train. It's just a few blocks. Skinker takes its name from Skinker Boulevard which in turn is named for Adam L. Skinker, a prominent early 20th-century Saint Louis civic figure and real‑estate developer. He was involved in subdivision development and land assembly on the western edge of the city at a time when Saint Louis was expanding toward Forest Park and the county line. The station is located between Forest Park-DeBaliviere (inbound) and University City-Big Bend (outbound). The trains run down the center of the station, which means the doors will open on the right side of the train. There is a mezzanine level with a bridge inside the station for transferring from one side to the other. The station is located in the Skinker Tunnel which itself is well below the ground with both stairs and elevator to reach the surface level. Beyond the station in both directions, the train returns to teh surface. The station seemed decently lit this afternoon. The tunnel bridge over the tracks serves as a pedestrian underpass that connects the university to the other side of the road, which is Very convenient. It is not the most decrepit or dirtiest station in STL but I've seen mold on the wall, especially on rainy days. I often couldn't refrain from wondering how deep these inhaled spores can reach in our trachea and bronchial tubes before being trapped in mucus though.

Though it wasn't during the road's heyday (more in its later years....), they want to make sure travelers will stop through their downtown and get a good look at the mill (because without the mill, there would be no Granite City, right?). But as Yelper Steven pointed out, it's a park dedicated to nostalgia and history. I've noticed that a lot of longtime Granite residents love to cling to the past (in a good and bad way) and showing off these old signs and relics is a great start. A mural and large shield are not too far of a walk. You'll find decent parking, be it on the street or at the small lot across the street from the Neon Sign Park. Be sure to check out the few recently installed Muffler Men statues in Granite City, as well as the "Fork in the Road" sculpture!

It's simply a tribute to two things from our past, classic neon signs and the last 100 miles in Illinois of the historic Route 66. If you're driving thru or by Granite City, it is worth the detour to do a couple of selfies in front of the mural. Of course if you can visit the park at night, you'll see the classic neon signs turned on and in all their glory. It's the Centennial of Route 66, so it is the perfect time to go check out, It's Electric.
