Or maybe they know it as the town that hosts the Shakespeare Festival each year, which is also true. Cedar City is a small-ish town (that's growing!) which is also known as a college town, housing SUU or Southern Utah University. It's grown a bit over the years and has become a little more touristy with annual events that draw people there. People that have lived here their entire lives will likely reminisce, when given the chance, about the "good old days." Listen to them. They probably have cool stories to share. Although it's close to St. George, the weather is closer to what you'd find in northern Utah. It typically gets snow in the winter and is much cooler than it's southern neighbor. There are a slew of hotels to serve tourists or people passing through. The restaurant scene isn't strong, but there are a handful of local places sprinkled amid lots of chains. You won't starve, but you might not find your new favorite dinner spot here either.

First tour (2022) scheduled was cancelled due to flooding in Bryce Canyon, not optimal conditions for hiking. With high expectations we re-booked for the following year, 2023. A month before our tour I was suddenly and un-expectedly hospitalized, a terrible blow. Condition turns out to be chronic, prohibiting me from any further hiking adventures, certainly not in remote areas far from a hospital. Compounding this blow, Southwest Adventure Tours refused us a refund ($3,600+) instead issuing a voucher for a future tour which we made clear we cannot use. We wanted to give this company a great review but they did not live up to our expectations. There are literally dozens of tour companies servicing the Mighty Five area, I would strongly advise shopping around before getting involved with Southwest Adventure Tours. Alot of money to risk losing for circumstances beyond your control. Thank-you.

Tons of waterfalls + slot canyon hiking through a freezing river = one of the most epic trails I've…read moreever done! It's like a mini version of The Narrows in Zion. The Kanarra Falls trail is quite an adventure - it's a water hike with some dramatic scenery and intense rock scrambling depending on how far in you go. If you only go to the ladder, I'd say it's a moderate trail. But if you go all the way to the last falls, it's more strenuous. I hiked it in late spring and the water was a balmy 38°F! I did some research and planned ahead to wear thick neoprene socks - But even with my thermal socks, the water was so cold my lower legs were numb for about 60-70% of the trail which made this moderate/strenuous hike even more challenging! So I highly recommend the socks if you're hiking outside of the late summer season bc that water is COLD! And you'll be walking in water depths anywhere from your ankles up to your mid-shins for about 75-80% of the trail. Getting to the first large falls by the ladder isn't terribly difficult and you'll still see several smaller falls along the way. The first part is along a well maintained dirt trail with a few small water crossings before you have to get down into the riverbed. So for those wanting to stop at the top of the ladder, it's still a fantastic and much less strenuous hike. But there are about 3-4 gorgeous falls and slot canyons past that leading up to the last falls that I really would've regretted not seeing. The rock scrambling can get quite difficult- especially for a short person (I'm 5'2"). At one point I had to hoist myself up over some very tall boulders using just my arms and had to do a bit of a chimney crawl up another boulder and a narrow slot wall so be prepared and know your abilities bc I struggled to get back down LOL! I used one of my poles for most of the hike bc the riverbed is very rocky and slippery. I also wore an old pair of my fave Salomon waterproof(ish) hiking shoes with really solid tread - definitely helped. I imagine in the hot weather you'd be fine in some sort of water shoe with no socks but not in winter/spring. Reservations for this hike are required year-round as they limit the number permitted daily to preserve the environment here since this is such a popular trail. It was easy to reserve my spot online and I recommend doing it as far in advance as possible bc spots go fast - especially in the summer. There's plenty of paved parking at the trailhead with nice bathrooms. There are also more bathrooms along the trail right before the first water crossing. It's easy to find - google maps takes you right to the parking area. AllTrails says the trail is 3.6 miles with 656 feet elevation gain but I did just over 5 miles total with 1100+ feet elevation gain by going past the ladder at the first falls - totally worth it - Definitely in my top 5 trails of all time!

Not a long trail, only about 4 miles round-trip with very little elevation gain, but Very beautiful mountains and rocks and the slot Canyon is just fantastic!! I saw Macbeth, As You Like It, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, and The Importance of Being Earnest. Every production was fantastic. The actors are top-notch, along with direction and a hardworking festival crew. The free events, like actor seminars and play orientations, add tremendous value to the experience. The Engelstad is really special, as are the festival grounds, which are a part of the SUU campus. If you want to get lost in a theater for a few days, this is a must-do experience. I loved it so much that I'm heading back to see the shows I missed. For reference, I'm a theater fan and often see shows on Broadway and in Las Vegas at the Smith Center and our community theaters.

This is an experience you won't soon forget, and one that anybody can do! What are you waiting for? Booking our reservations was painless. I made a phone call and spoke with Patty, who gave me a few options of times for our ride. We had a group of three-two adults and a teenager. (On the day of the ride, we we met another group of three that joined us.) She gave me instructions on where to go on the day of our ride, and sent them again via text with GPS coordinates so we could easily meet our guide. Mike, our guide, was fantastic. He was friendly, took some time up front to give us a quick orientation and then asked each of us about our horse riding experience so he could match us up with an appropriate horse. He was patient with us, as some of us had very little experience. The trail itself was not all the way flat, but not so challenging that a novice rider would struggle. There are a few areas where we went up hill and then a few where we went down. Mike advised us on proper posture to make it easier on the horse as we navigated some of that hilly terrain. At one point, he recognized that the teen in the group was getting a little frustrated with his horse. He gave him some instruction and then engaged him in conversation about music-something they had in common. I appreciated that Mike was able to include everyone in the group in some way. He's a good dude. After the ride, we were given some carrots to feed our horses. I loved that part! I think the horses appreciated it too. This may not be an activity that we will do every time we visit St. George, but it will definitely be on that we remember forever and bring along some friends to show them the beauty of Snow Canyon from a different perspective.
