Great steakhouse! The food was delicious, the steak was cooked perfectly, and the service was excellent. Everything from the atmosphere to the staff made for a wonderful dining experience. Definitely a place I'd come back to and highly recommend!
We were staying at the hotel and decided to eat at the steakhouse. The food was mediocre. Service was excellent! My salmon dish was ok and the green sauce that came with it was absolutely terrible! I couldn't finish it. My husband's steak was good. Sourdough was delicious. Kids Mac and cheese was very tasty! Service was spot on! Friendly and professional. We would probably skip it next time.
First time to try this place, we were 15 in the group. It was my late birthday celebration. The food took so long to get to our table . Good thing we ordered appetizers. For the most part, most of us liked what we ordered. Except for one friend of mine ordered Marinated Bison Ribeye and she said it was very greasy. I ordered Dry Aged Blue Fin Tuna and I loved it. No fishy after taste. Food ordered : Mary's Farm Duck, 24 oz Pork Chop, Filet Mignon. To share : Wagyu Beef Tartar, Old Hickory Charcuterie Board, California Cheese Board, Black Tiger Prawn Cocktail, scalloped crudo . Dessert time, it was also the same, it took soooo long to get the desserts on the table . Few friends had to leave cuz it was getting late for them. Food: 4 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4 Order type: Dine in Price per person: $$$$ Parking space: Difficult to find parking. They do validate .
Very much on the expensive side, but worth every penny. I had the 21-day-aged short rib, the meat falls off the bone. Simply delicious. Very attentive staff.
Really aesthetic dishes, just poorly executed on flavors. The salmon was really greasy (and there was something funky on mine)... and was not de-boned properly. I had a lot of fish bones I needed to pick out as I was chewing. I've had their filet mignon before and it's very over salted and not as tender as one would expect from this cut. My favorite thing here is the sourdough bread and butter. The old fashioned was awful - don't fall for their "signature" marketing. The ambiance is nice, open and modern with a large tree in the center of the restaurant. I recommend grabbing a drink before or after at the lobby bar before making your way here for dinner. Service was EXCELLENT. Huge shout-out to Nico!
The Old Hickory is the very upscale steakhouse, located in the Gaylord Hotel and Spa. The food and service is top notch and it can give those better name chains a run for their money. No pun intended. We came here recently and were wowed by it all. Our server was attentive but never hovered. Everything was very professional. We started with two glasses of Pinot and some Parker house rolls. For our entrées, we went with the Tomahawk Steak, Pork Chops and I went with the Waygu Beef Tartare. Both the presentation and taste of our dishes were amazing. See these photos.... We also ordered sides of Brussels Sprouts and their creamy Mac 'n Cheese. Five Stars
Located inside the Gaylord hotel in Chula Vista. Take a right after entering. Lets start with the positives, the apps! The seafood tower and bread were great. However, its all downhill from there. First, the food took over an hour to come out. The restaurant was not very busy that night. Next, value for money is definitely not there. While the tomahawk steak was decent, it did not have the quality of a $200 steak. The flavor was not rich, and was not cooked very evenly through. I ordered a medium steak and most of it came out well done. (some parts were rare) Finally, the restaurant validated our parking, as they said they would. But what they did not mention is that we would still have to pay over $35! If I had known this, plenty of street parking was available.
What a disappointing evening. Went to celebrate a birthday and an anniversay. Ordered 2 appetizers. Sea food tower was good but the quantity was ok. Ordered a bread and that was tasty. Ordered a sea food entree and the rest were steak entrees. It took soooooo long to get our order after placing. Ordered med rare steaks and they were well done and very chewy. We were 8 of us and our total bill was $2000+. Not worth the price. Will not go again and would not recommend. Parking after valudation was $35. Total rip off. Better steak options in down town.
Overall, the food was good with the filet mignon being the highlight of the night. It was cooked perfectly and the garlic butter sauce was to die for. A wonderful pairing that I highly recommend. The smoky mac & cheese is very heavy and filling, but a touch bland. The brussels sprouts had great flavor, but I wish there were a bit more crunchy through as it was a little soggy for my taste. The French onion soup was good but small for the $22 cost. I would've loved to seen a solid piece of bread on top of the cheese rather than pieces of the bread inside of the soup. And the sourdough bread with the beef tallow spread was wonderful. Would definitely get that again. Service was wonderful. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Food came quickly. And the atmosphere is wonderful a beautifully decorated restaurant. Overall, a solid meal and would wanna come back and try some other options.
Old Hickory Steakhouse is the flagship restaurant at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center in Chula Vista. There was a sign on the southward facing side of the structure that indicated where it was located in the complex. I was told by an operator that if you order an entree, they will validate two hours of self parking in the multi-level deck on the back of the property. That will save you at least $10. Lucky for me, there was an empty spot in the row of free spaces directly across from the main driveway. When you entered the lobby, this restaurant was to the left. Hanging in a refrigerated dry locker to the left of the hostess stand were various meats and fishes on display. The ambiance felt more like a mid-level bar and grill as opposed to an upscale steakhouse. No tablecloths were used, and the furniture was less than impressive as another reviewer had mentioned that they were uncomfortable. A two-sided menu was given to me as I was led to a small table in the main dining area. Chilled seafood, starters, salads, and soups were on one side. The flip side listed the land and sea, grilled offerings, and accompaniments/sides. Prices were at a premium highlighted by a 32 oz tomahawk steak showcased tableside for $225. I started my dinner with the Charred Spanish Octopus from the five choices of starters. The grilled tentacle was served on a bed of bucatini pasta with garlic cream sauce, fennel oil, and espelette glaze. The octopus was a bit chewier than I liked, however I loved the noodles and sauce. For an entree, I stayed away from the steaks and opted for the Mary's Farm Duck. Honey and spice were applied to two pieces of duck breast which was drizzled with fig and port wine jus. A duck fat potato terrine was the side that came with this dish. At least 20 layers of thinly sliced potato were used to make the terrine. The flavors on the duck were terrific as I enjoyed the medium rare cooked meat. It made me glad that I skipped the beef in favor of this poultry item. My server (Nicholas) was enthusiastic and chatty with each of his tables. It made for great engagement, however it took time to catch his attention when he was busy talking to other customers. After dining here, I can see why there have been very polarized viewpoints of the experience at Old Hickory Steakhouse. With its high prices, I don't think the quality was top notch, therefore the value and my overall rating were at a three star level.
This is a casual steak restaurant with upscale prices. The food was just amazing. Their sourdough bread is delicious and is served with beef tallow butter. The filet mignon just superb. My husband and I came to celebrate our wedding anniversary here tonight. Our first time visit to this restaurant. It's located inside the beautiful Gaylord resort hotel. What made the entire experience memorable was the exceptional service we received by our server David. He's fun, friendly, knowledgeable, and just full of charisma. It's like he was born for customer service. He's such a natural. We will definitely be back here one day soon and we hope to request David to be our server again.
Please DO NOT EAT HERE. Food is not good!!! Go to the steakhouses outside the resort! Overpriced for food that's under par! Service and ambiance is great. They want to uphold a classy , high end experience. Seafood Chowder was more like a few pieces of seafood with a little broth. The broth or "soup" was very thin did not give a soup consistency. I ordered the rigatoni Mac and cheese and the waiter brought out some disgusting looking red and white pasta. I said I ordered rigatoni he said oh well they told me last minute they were out of rigatoni pasta. I responded, You couldn't have communicated that to me before serving that disgusting plate? Maybe giving me another option. That pasta was the worst thing I have eaten. I order the 22oz ribeye steak, 60 percent was fat , waste of $98. The poached lobster was also a miss , overcooked and rubbery. Do not fall for the hype of this place... food is not good!
For our date night tonight (5/19/25), my boyfriend and I went to Old Hickory Steakhouse at the Gaylord Pacific Resort in Chula Vista. Ana, our host, was super helpful with giving us all of the seating options that we had for our 5:30pm reservation. We shared the 12 oz. American Wagyu New York Strip--tender and beautifully marbled. Our server was superb and recommended DAOU wine, which I already love, since our first pick from France wasn't available. Thank you Old Hickory Steakhouse for making our date night a memorable one!!

The restaurant was pretty packed when we went, so unfortunately the service was extremely slow. It took quite a while for someone to even come to our table to take a drink order, and even longer before we were able to put in our food order. Once we finally ordered, it was close to an hour before our food came out, all while the chef was walking around the dining room chatting with tables. The ambiance was okay, nothing that really stood out to me. Thankfully, the food was pretty good, which is why I'm still giving it 3 stars. I'd be willing to give Old Hickory another try because I enjoyed the food. Hopefully the service is much better next time! read more

We decided to check out the steakhouse during our little staycation at the Gaylord. We didn't need reservations and were seated immediately once we walked in. We ordered: * Ahi Tuna Crudo: I wouldn't recommend this. It was a very small portion and mostly consisted of vegetables. There wasn't really a wow factor to it. * 21-Day Dry Aged 16 oz Bone-In NY Strip: My friend and I split this. It was cooked well, but overall it was just OK. It lacked some flavor and wasn't my favorite steak I've had. * Potato Purée: This was probably my favorite dish of the night. It was delicious and something you really can't go wrong with. * Broccolini: This was a miss for me. It had very little flavor and I wouldn't recommend it. The best part of the meal was actually the starter the chef sent over. The soup and amuse-bouche were delicious and ended up being the highlight of the meal. It was a really nice touch and appreciated. Overall, I'm glad we checked it out. It's a cute steakhouse with a nice atmosphere, and I'd definitely be open to coming back and trying different steaks. However, nothing really stood out enough for me to say it was a must-visit, especially considering the price point. The meal felt overpriced for what we received, and I think the dishes could use a little more flavor and seasoning to really make them shine. read more

Surprisingly great. The tallow butter sourdough was a standout. Jesse, our server, was simply amazing with the best service and recommendations. Steak was tender (filet and cowboy) and the mushrooms were great. Caramel chocolate dessert with pop rocks were unique and flavorful. We really did not expect this to be such a great meal and it was fantastic! Wish we took picture of desserts but sort of forgot and just dived in. read more

Super friendly and attentive staff. Allen and Adam did a great job taking care of us. Wasn't too busy at 5pm but the bar area did eventually fill up. Bar opens at 5pm, food available around 5:30pm. They had a good Paloma and a good Marg. A few beers on tap but nothing that caught our eye. Beet and burrata is served without greens, a bit under-seasoned but lots of beets and whipped burrata. The pistachios added a great crunch, though. The Wagyu bone marrow was well-seasoned and had great flavor! Puffed rice was a nice touch, but 3 of the 4 pieces we got were stale. The bone marrow could've been warmer because it was solid and white, so not super appetizing. But again, flavors and presentation were there but could work on execution. Loved that the Octopus came with some Bucatini, but must admit the octopus was a little chewy. Sauce was good, had fennel and a green onion bulb. Beautiful restaurant. They've also got a nice Private room facing the marina for special events like a birthday. It's a trendy, upscale restaurant and we're excited to see them do well. read more

Old Hickory Steakhouse is a truly beautiful restaurant in the new Gaylord in Chula Vista. Ambiance is bright and open, which contrasts dark enclosed steakhouses. I base my reviews on value - my expectations for a $5 meal are very different from a $50 meal. So with that in mind, Old Hickory is okay but not yet great. It is very new, so there are a few details missed, but I'm confident these rough edges will be smoothened out over time. The food was really good. We started with the Parker House Rolls and Spanish Octopus - both were delicious and didn't disappoint. For entrees we ordered the 32 oz Tomahawk, 3 oz A5 Japanese Wagyu, and 8 oz Filet Mignon. Steaks were all delicious, but served a tad over the desired temperature (Medium instead of Medium Rare). We also ordered the Duck Fat Fingerling Potatoes, but these were the only disappointment. I would avoid this side dish as it was nothing special. Service was pretty good and attentive. Ava and Eddie were on point and took good care of us. They helped celebrate my early birthday with a complimentary Chocolate and Caramel dessert which was delicious. There were some hiccups, where we had to request new plates and silverware. There was a big gap between apps and entree. Small inconveniences. Overall, this is a good spot which will be great. Looking forward to revisiting read more

food was super good, the service was amazing !! our server erika and another guy who was helping us ( didn't catch his name ) were so nice and attentive. Waters were always full and we were offered refills everytime our drink was empty. We got our plates cleared as we went and service was 10/10. The place is really clean and so are the restrooms. read more

They just opened about 4 months ago. I think their food is pretty good. We got the app and entree combo for $48. Tiger prawn cocktail and rib eye. I think the prawn cocktail was perfectly done, no changes. The rib eye was good and very tender. Only thing was I think the sauce was too salty. I'm sorry, chef! I swear everything else about the dish was good. Just less salt in the sauce and it's otherwise well done. Service was excellent. read more
Everything was great! We came to the Gaylord hotel to celebrate our anniversary. When we made our reservation, we let them know in advance and Alana took it seriously. As our waitress she and her team made our visit an experience to remember. From the vegetable juice amuse bouche to the delicious and fun chocolate caramel desert the meal was extraordinary - a celebration with each course. read more

I ordered the grilled maitake mushroom and my friend got the Mary's Farm duck. We also ordered the sourdough boule -- which was so good! Both of our dishes were delicious and surprisingly light, which was perfect since we wanted something nice before heading to bed. If I'd been hungrier, I might've ordered something more filling, but the bread and butter honestly stole the show, I could've easily eaten another loaf! For dessert, we shared the raspberry dessert, which was unique and so good -- not your typical sweet but really flavorful and refreshing. We didn't have reservations, but they offer open seating. The server was so kind and let us know a high-top would open soon, so we waited about 20 minutes. It was worth it, he even helped us move once the table was ready. Overall, everything was amazing, great service, delicious food, and such a nice atmosphere. I'm not sure if I'd go back soon, but I'm glad we tried it. read more
I enjoyed the food and customer service at the Old Hickory Steakhouse. The venue is very loud and very family friendly. Attire runs the gambit from T-shirts to resort wear to business casual, not unexpected for a hotel venue. Our table of 4 shared the Oysters (6) and the Sour dough Boule with tallow butter as appetizers and the Tomahawk and Duck breast for our main meal, with crab creamed spinach, sautéed mushrooms, and the rigatoni mac and cheese as sides. For drinks we shared a bottle of the 2020 Stag's Leap Petit Sirah. The Tomahawk is carved at the table, it came cooked to order medium rare. Be open minded to the atmosphere. It does get very loud but the quality of the food and the friendly and attentive table service easily overshadow that downside. Didn't have any plans for Xmas this year so we decided to try Xmas dinner at the Old Hickory Steakhouse located in the newly built Gaylord resort. We arrived for our reservation at 5:15pm and were promptly seated. The restaurant only had another couple in it at that time but it filled up by the time we left two hours later. The dinner menu was a three course prix fixed menu at $145 and included three wine pairings in that price, which was a steal. Here is a list of all the courses and options we were offered. Amuse * Sugar Plum Appetizer (Choice of one) * Santa Hojatamale, smoked queso, squash blossom, honeynut * Partridge & Pearclove spiced quail, cornice pear, rosemary * Pepper & Mintspiny lobster salad, habanada coulis, verbena oil Entrée (Choice of one) * Dry Aged Pacifico Basssaffron velouté, hickory swiss chard, forrest mushrooms * Christmas Goose Cassouletconfit leg, roasted breast, pork belly, tarbais beans, tarragon * Filet Mignonsaffron potato, grilled asparagus, brown butter oxtail sauce Pre-Dessert * Orange Crush Palate CleanserGrand Marnier, orange crush sherbert, passion fruit meringues Dessert (Choice of one) * Chocolate Peppermintchocolate cremeux, peppermint whip, chocolate crunch, cocoa nib tuille * Snowball Fightchiffon cake, bergamot, earl grey, coconut The sugar plum amuse arrived in these beautiful glass globes with fake snow on top of them, hanging from the branches of a mini tree. Very creative. For our appetizer I chose the Quail while my friend chose the lobster salad. The quail was cooked perfectly and the accompanying cornice pear was just delicious but the lobster salad was chopped lobster in a mayonnaise dressing and was average. For the main course I got the filet mignon and my friend selected the Bass fish. The steak was a good 8oz serving and cooked perfectly to medium. The fish was a rather sizable and thick portion which we found upon our first bite to be undercooked. The staff were apologetic and took it back to be fixed and returned five minutes later with the fish beautifully cooked. They (including the chef) were also very apologetic for the error, which I thought was really nice of them. Both of the meals we thought were outstanding. The pre desert was an orange crush palette cleanser that was so yummy that I would have enjoyed it as a desert even. For the desert I selected the snowball fight which came on a plate with a painting of a boy flinging a snowball. Very cute. My friend ate the chocolate desert and that was the better of the two choices as the snowball was mostly coconut shavings on a chiffon cake and not that appetizing. My wife and I decided to check out the Gaylord Pacific in Chula Vista on Saturday evening and we walked by the Old Hickery and decided to give it a try. The place looks great. They have a dry aged oven next to the reception desk and you can see all the proteins being dry aged. They also have an extensive wine list. The decor it self is modern and bright but to me seems to miss the mark if trying to set the ambiance of an old steakhouse. We started off with drinks, I ordered the smoked old fashioned and my wife ordered a white wine. They were unable to smoke the old fashioned because they were out of wood chips. I didn't mind. Our server was excellent, her name was Marci. She was very knowledgeable and attentive. For a starter, we ordered the Black Tiger Prawn Cocktail. It's had a great presentation and was very tasty. I ordered the Dry aged cowboy ribeye and a side of baby fingerling potatoes roasted in duck fat, my wife ordered the Halibut in a lemon butter sauce with a side of roasted asparagus. The steak was cooked to medium and was good. It had a nice savory rub and was cooked over an open flame. I felt the cut was inconsistent. The steak got thinner away from the bone to the lip of the steak. It was supposed to be a 20oz cut but seamed more like 16oz. Also, there was a small amount of grit on the steak, perhaps from a dirty grill. The flavor of the steak was great but It didn't taste dry-aged, at least not like other dry-aged steak I've had before. It's was missing that little umami flavor that aging adds. It was a good steak, but not an excellent steak for the price of $98. The halibut was cooked perfectly and the presentation was great. The sauce was a little bland. My wife said it lacked flavor, and that maybe it should be accompanied by a roasted lemon. The side dishes were ok. The roasted asparagus was excellent. Lightly seasoned and roasted on the grill, the quality was outstanding. However, the fingerling potatoes were not good and we had to send them back. The seasoning was good and light but the potatoes were under cooked. I know sometimes they are served al dente but these were shy of that. I prefer them nice and soft and silky. They should mention that on the menu. They did remake them and the second time they were more cooked but still inconsistent. Some were well cooked, others al dente. Would not order them again. Overall, the restaurant is good but for the price you expect excellence and they missed the mark with the exception of the service, which was great. Such a disappointment. Came here to celebrate a 30th bday for my gf and if I could sum up this experience in one phrase, it would be: a McDonald's wrapped in a steakhouse. From start to finish, this was one of the most disappointing and overpriced meals I've had in a long time. First, the service was abysmal. We had to flag down multiple servers just to get basic attention. Our actual server was running around like a chicken with her head cut off, which made simple requests unnecessarily difficult. For a restaurant charging premium prices, the level of professionalism was shockingly low. No high end steakhouse standards of service anywhere. The two martinis we ordered (the same drink, mind you) arrived looking and tasting completely different one of them barely even half full. At this price point, consistency and attention to detail should be a given, not a luxury. Then came the food. We ordered the "wagyu steak tartare" only to be served a cooked version, which completely defeats the purpose of tartare. Either the kitchen doesn't know what they're doing, or they assume the customers don't. Either way, not great. We ordered the sourdough, and after 15/20 mins of waiting they came back to tell us they were out. We got the Parker rolls instead and it seemed like Hawaiian rolls thrown in a pan and salted. However, even those came out cold in the middle and had to send them back. Only thing worth ordering may have been the oysters! Served with a pomegranate mignonette. To top it all off, the entire place had a vaguely fishy odor lingering, which was not only unpleasant but also totally unappetizing -- especially for a steakhouse. For the prices they charge, this spot should be delivering a refined and memorable experience. Instead, it felt like a sloppy, confused attempt at fine dining. With this place being so new they have time to hopefully fix things but for now I'd strongly recommend looking elsewhere if you're seeking quality food, good service, or anything remotely worth your money. Would have loved to like this place since it's new and happy to come back if it was worth it but does not seem like it will be great. read more

Came for a New Year's Eve dinner. The service was very good through the whole experience. We were greeted with complimentary champagne on arrival while we waited for our table. We got a little oyster as a welcome from the chef. We had the scallop appetizer, it was very acidic but was good. We had the filet and the dry aged NY Strip, both were ordered medium but were overcooked, they barely had pink in them. The filet was still perfectly tender but had a weird seasoning on it that was not on the NY. Both came with a little salad on top. The creamed spinach with crab was one of the best spinach sides I have ever had. The panacotta dessert was a nice end to the meal. When it comes down to it when you are dining at this price point you will get a higher quality steak at Stake (Coronado), Flemings or Ruths Chris but I guess we also need to remember this is a hotel restaurant. read more

I came here to celebrate my birthday, and everything, from the atmosphere to the food - was exceptional. The space has an energetic, elevated vibe, and the service was top-tier without ever feeling stuffy. We tried a few different steaks and every cut our table ordered was outstanding--expertly cooked and packed with flavor. But the dry-aged ribeye? I'm still thinking about it. Rich, tender, and perfectly done - truly a standout. Our server David was fantastic, attentive, friendly, and made the whole evening flow effortlessly. Huge shoutout to Executive Chef Josh Mouzakes for creating a dining experience that feels both refined and welcoming. You can tell there's real passion behind every plate. So proud of what Chef Josh has built and even happier to have a steakhouse this good right in the neighborhood. Already planning our next visit. read more
