The Old Governor's Mansion is a piece of not only Baton Rouge and Louisiana history, but also United States history. If you are visiting this city or even if you have lived here for awhile, take time to visit this historic treasure. Learn about the early reigns of Louisiana governors and the significance of each room in the mansion. If you've been lucky enough to have attended an event here, I'm sure it was a treat. The staff and the docents here know their stuff, so pay to take the tour. It's located in the heart of downtown Baton Rouge, so before or after your tour, be sure to stroll around and visit some of the surrounding businesses. If you are looking for a field trip spot for the kiddos, get this on your school's radar. I have visited many times and have seen it set-up many different ways. It's a gorgeous property that has been very well preserved with the help of Preserve Louisiana.

Beautiful place! Visited during an event that was hosted there. Took a self-guided tour at first then came to Jimmie Davis' room and a very nice and funny volunteer finished the tour with some interesting facts about the governor. Enjoyed the history lesson and the quirky commentary!! The building itself is breathtaking. I'm a sucker for antique bedrooms!!

The Old Governor's Mansion is absolutely gorgeous and a venue we love to utilize annually for the NLJC Cotillion. I highly recommend this for any event, they're easy to work with and overall a great establishment. Our members, parents, and staff look forward to the next Masquerade Ball!

Dinning room. Awesome tour guide.

The Guru at Circa 1857

The Guru is a great event space located at the amazing Circa 1857 complex. It's tucked away toward…read morethe middle of the overall campus so it's conveniently located by the large interior parking area. This parking is off road, very large, fenced, and seems quite safe. The space itself is surrounded by other buildings and is medium sized. In keeping with the name, there are meditative motifs to the interior decorations. This space seems quite versatile, our group used the round tables with nice table cloths and folding chairs to enjoy a potluck and then hold a meeting. The space could be kept entirely open, used for talks or lectures, or ay sort of party. There are overhead doors on one wall that presumably could be opened for an indoor/outdoor event. Circa 1857 has such a great location on Government Street right be the Garden District, that it would be a convenient place to have a meeting or event. So don't hesitate to consider The Guru for your next gathering!

The owner is very sweet and you can tell she truly wants to provide a unique event space at a reasonable price. Another thing I loved about The Guru was being able to bring in your own food. It was hard for me to find a venue that let me bring my own food but also had the right #aesthetic lol! I didn't even decorate the place because it already done. They provided me with the tables (high top, circle, & rectangle), chairs, and even have linens available. There are 2 bathrooms and a back room where you can have your food/buffet set up. They even have this really awesome bar cart that my bartender was able to use! It can double for a beverage/food station too. (You know I added plenty of pics :P ) This is an extra bonus but I recently learned they also can host meetings, interview recordings, and more so it's not just for parties or weddings. On top of that, learning that the owner works to give back to the community/non profits is heartwarming. If you need an intimate, "not too big but just right" space, give this place a look!

The Capitol Park Museum is definitely worth a visit…read more There are some genuinely interesting exhibits, and it does a good job showcasing Louisiana's history and culture. It's engaging enough to spend a solid amount of time exploring, especially if you're already visiting other museums in the area. That said, certain parts of the museum felt a bit repetitive - almost like carbon copies of exhibits you might see at the Old State Capitol or other nearby museums. If you're doing multiple stops, you might notice some overlap. Still, the admission is very affordable, which makes it an easy and worthwhile stop overall.

Honestly, I had high hopes, but I should have known better. The state of LA has a rich history of…read morebeing part of the Deep South so I'm not sure why I expected anything elevated, learned, recognized, or truthful to be here. The museum is cheap to get into, can be completed in less than 2 hours and is technically geared more towards school age, but since it was our first time in the state capitol I figured it was worth the visit. I actually found myself crying, actual tears, in the middle of a museum for how poorly done the entire portion on slavery was. If ever there was a chance for a state to tell the real story, the real history, this would be it and that isn't what happens here. At EVERY turn there was some watered down version of how slaves "benefited" or "learned skills" and I was horrified. There was an entire section dedicated to slavery and not one school field trip was visiting that section and there were at least 2 buses of kids in the location. Let me be clear though, when I say a section was dedicated to slavery they did not tell the full story or the truth and they didn't even try! The one highlight was learning the history of mardi gras upstairs, but it was very Krewe heavy and I want to believe there's more history to learn there as well.
