I came from NJ, Bergen County to be exact. filled with top grade bagel shops, pancake houses, perfect New York style pizzas, restaurants and awesome parks galore to explore. Just a hop and skip away from the City. It was a big change for me to move to a city I knew nothing about. For goodness sakes, I live in the (whisper) South. I never imagined that day coming. But alas, here I am. My husband was transferred here from overseas. He works on the base in Norfolk. We chose to live in Newport News because it was the best out of all the other surrounding areas that are close enough for my husband to travel to work. For me, it took about a year to get used to living here. Correction. I am still not used to the weather, damn that weather. No legitimate winter wonderland Holiday Season, everyone bundled up, noses and cheeks cold. God sprinkling diamonds throughout the nights. I don't think I will ever get used to the weather down here. Seriously. Summer is grueling! I style my hair and have my makeup on just how I'd like, step outside the door and bam wham boom, my face is melting, my hair has decided to be uncooperative, and I am sweating bullets. I digress. A lot of little gem restaurants around here, lets get it clear, not as wonderful as back in Jersey, but the ones out here will do. There is a ton of conveniences. I have my favorite shops that I go to. Newport News park is awesome and I live about 12 minutes from the Military Gym! Would I recommend living down here? Only if you look for a place away from downtown. Maybe just a visit. Visit the gems you come across.

I must have passed it a dozen times, but just haven't had the chance to go in. I finally had the chance to pop my head in there when my friends were visiting from Montreal. It's quite a spacious space. They've divided the pamphlet areas into general state attractions on one wall and more localized to Norfolk and surrounding cities that are included in Hampton Roads/Coastal Va on another. I really loved that they have info of the other cities and not just Norfolk. They also have a beautiful "OMG NFK" art mural that is in line with the art work that can be found in the Neon district nearby. They have lots of Norfolk themed merch for sale and items from local businesses and artists. This is such a great office full of info for tourists and locals alike! The lady behind the desk greeted us upon entry and was more of "I'm over here if you need me" and not overbearing. Be a good local and check it out and play tourist in your own city! You might discover something new and not know your city as well as you thought! :)

It is reminiscent of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but instead of stars on the ground, there are granite plaques on tall brick pillars. It is a self guided tour, whose honorees are Virginians, by birth or residence, who have made a significant contribution to the nation and the world. Some of the honorees include Woodrow Wilson, Edgar Allen Poe, Ella Fitzgerald, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Pearl Bailey, Booker T. Washington, Arthur Ashe, Patsy Cline, Thomas Jefferson, Pocahontas and Captain John Smith. Inductees can be nominated by anyone, but are officially chosen by judges from various backgrounds such as the heads of various historical societies, college presidents , and the heads of public libraries. There is an annual event to announce the newest additions to the Legends Walk. Be sure to check both sides of the pillars. That is where you will find plaques. This is a living attraction, with lots of room for expansion. (just see that spaces available to place a plaque on the pillar). Oceanographer Mathew Fontaine Maury and bluegrass musician Ralph Stanley were inducted as the Class of 2019. It is relatively easy to get to and is marked with a huge archway on each side of it. There is metered street parking and a few commercial lots within walking distance that you can park at to visit here. The meters cost about $2/ hour and the lots vary in price depending on what is going on and the season. There were a few urban campers taking a nap and hanging out while I was there. And the place could be a bit cleaner and maybe a little maintenance. The bronze plaques could also use some periodic polishing. All in all, it is still an attraction to see in Virginia Beach. It is not a destination spot though and would be best if it was visited during a trip to the boardwalk or one of the other local attractions.

I would also recommend visiting the park during day time. Overall a decent small park to get to know some of the greats of Virginia ie. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Woodrow Wilson, James Madison, Arther Ashe, and the famous Triple Crown champion, Secretariat.

Soooo.. did you know that the library holds some pretty cool classes for free? (I say free, but we…read moreall know nothing is free-tax payer's money). I came upon a flyer at the cherry blossom festival from the VB library stand and lo and behold! Drone obstacle course caught my eye! What, where, when?!? I was excited. Registration for any classes or programs are typically open two weeks prior to course day. I was on it like white on rice! They only had six spots for the entire class, but only five signed up. Eighty percent of the class included myself and my siblings. It was like an unintentional adult siblings' play date at the library. It took place in their meeting room which was a fair size room. But, unfortunately with five drones operating at the same time, Bluetooth interference was rampant. This caused multiple simultaneous hovering, then full on disconnect and drones crashing to the ground. We learned to try and fly our respective drones a certain distance from one another to avoid this. Before we launched our drones, Julianna our instructor did a presentation on drones and identifying their parts, along with drone safety. We used mini Tello drones which were pretty fun to fly. You could even make them bounce and do 360 degree flips! My batteries were at half life after a short while. By the time I tried to make mine flip it didn't have sufficient battery life to execute this maneuver. I went through four batteries! It was a blast to practice navigating the drone through the hoops and fences in the room. I can't say I will be joining the DRL anytime soon with my navigation skills. But I did progress quite a bit by the end of the class! I made it through three hoops in a row, all different heights and two fences. You can even do hand landings. This was a really fun course and I am so appreciative and thankful for the VB public libraries for setting it up! Julianna was very organized, friendly, helpful and very PATIENT! I'm also glad they do separate drone classes- one for adults only and another for teens. My only suggestion is to maybe see if the library would be able to negotiate some space in the PA Rec center next door for more room. I understand why they don't hold the drone class outside due to air restrictions with no fly zones and in order to easily monitor the flying distance. I'm also thinking the batteries drained quickly due to the propeller guards. They're added weight to the drones, but I also understand the purpose is to protect the propellers and anything it comes into contact. Believe me, there were plenty of crashes going on, and not just due to Bluetooth interference. Haha.

I'll play along. The price is a lovely $16 which is a ripoff, but in today's world, it isn't that shocking. What is shocking is that they still have staffed tollbooths and still accept cash. Anymore, that's something from another dimension. What else? The damn thing has been under construction for what...a decade or so? It's supposedly going to be finished at some point in '27 or '28 which will be just in time for when they start construction of the new CBBT in '32 which will probably go on until the year 2112. My other favorite thing here are the fake unmanned police cars kept at "strategic" places I assume in some attempt at slowing people down. On my most recent crossing, two Thursdays ago, you've got a crazy Nor'easter out there whipping around all kinds of rain and wind along with rolling waves coming pretty far up the bridge pilings, and everyone (self-included) is still doing more than double the lowered "speed limit". Why bother? With that said, every trip is an adventure. How many dead seagulls do you need to avoid or further flatten? How f-ed up is the traffic pattern as you play Where's Waldo with where your lane is going? But....if you're going to the VA Beach or OBX area from the northeast, it's hard to argue that any other road is more efficient. So suck it up and pay your $16 and head down under.

I will be back. The staff at MML are so welcoming and helpful. This library is a hidden gem of activities for people of all ages! I am excited about coming back for other events. There is a public parking lot beside and behind the library. Street parking on Washington is also available.

Another easy early voting experience at the new Voter Registration & Elections Building!…read more I love the centralized location on Studio Drive off Holland Road in the shadow of Mount Trashmore. The organization of the different ways to vote is what makes voting so easy. The front of the building is where people can walk in to vote. For those 65 and over or handicapped, there is a long winding line on the back side that leads to a canopy at a back door to the building. Election officials take your driver's license inside to verify registration and return with a ballot in a large envelope. The quality of the service is excellent, officials are pleasant, prompt and efficient. There is a ballot drop box on the west side of the building that is marked and decorated so one can find it with ease. Signs are everywhere, pointing people to the appropriate place to vote. Parking is plentiful. The large green space at the front of the building is beautiful. The treed area surrounding it makes one feel as if they're in a nature preserve, rather than off a major thoroughfare. I'm not sure how much the city paid to build this very large building. But the value it provides in the form of location and ease of voting makes it worth every tax dollar of mine that they spent.

This is the smaller library of the Suffolk Library circuit but, it still has a lot of potential…read more The books available are on a smaller scale but, you can still request books and pick them up there and programs are offered at this location. This location still offers library events for kids, adults and families. There are programs available at various times and days. The staff is friendly and helpful. I have often seen my familiar staff from different locations at this spot. There is also a couple computers for use as well as a nice seating room in the back perfect for story time. The parking is small and limited. A busy program like the Eclipse viewing had me parking across the street at the store. Otherwise I have been able to park fairly close to the door.

There are three branches to the city of Suffolk's library system: the Morgan Memorial Library in…read morethe downtown area, the North Suffolk Library, and the Chuckatuck Branch Library. I had already visited the first two branches numerous times but had never quite made it to the Chuckatuck Branch. I decided it was time to remedy that and made my way there recently to check it out. The Chuckatuck Branch is small and located on the outskirts of town, which -combined with their limited hours- is why I hadn't managed a visit yet. As you near the library situated next to Saunders Supply Company, you spot the sign, which screams, "We have internet!" Only in rural towns will you find libraries needing to broadcast this fact. The "parking lot" is small and not marked but trust me when I say you won't have any trouble finding a spot. Upon entering, a librarian looked up to greet me. She explained that the library has been recently refurbished. A little history on the place: back in the 1920s, a group of women wanted to open a library for the community. They began working at it, but sadly, it failed. Their dream was realized in 1983 thanks in great part to Saunders Supply Company who donated the site and building where the current Chuckatuck Library stands. This was definitely a group effort and brought to fruition in order to serve the more rural part of Suffolk. I spent a few minutes walking around to see what they had to offer; it didn't take me long. They have all of the usual genres--just not a large selection. However, you can always request books through the online catalogue and they will be sent over from other locations. There were a few computers being utilized as well and a room towards the back that perhaps holds small events. The biggest surprise was the shopping carts that are also over at the North Suffolk branch; it was somewhat humorous to see them in such a small library. It's difficult to give a rating to a place such at this. While it is extremely small and underequipped compared to the other branches--who am I to judge its value to the community it serves? If you decide to check it out, I recommend also combining the trip with a visit to Lone Star Lakes Park just around the corner. Books to ignite the mind; nature to soothe the soul.
