Small library but cute and able to order books from other Suffolk libraries if they don't have what you're looking for.

After getting off work in Portsmouth, I headed to this library hours before the Yelp Elite last…read moreWednesday. To have quality time for myself while reading a good book was much needed. Let's dive into details on how the visit was. The library is located right by an Elementary school and apartments. I only sat in the lobby area after walking inside to rest for a few hours to read a book I brought from home. Adjacent to the lobby, you have three entrances to the Treasurer, Commissioner of the Revenue and the main room to the library. I'm sure each area has been cared for by staff. For the lobby, it was spotless and each table appeared clean. And it was air conditioned well, which was good for me considering the Yelp Elite event was gonna be outside. Foot traffic was minimal. Very perfect for me with reading. Couldn't have asked for more. If you're in need for some quiet time, a library is always there. Thanks Norfolk Suffolk Library for providing it for yours truly :)

I notice they have 2 book returns out front. You will find the office of the treasurer and commissioner in the foyer of the building. They have a children's section separate from the back. The fiction and nonfiction are located on the main floor. They have quiet study areas throughout, but they could add more.

On weekdays, it is inundated with squads of retarded people who are dumped there by the hood rats…read morewho are supposed to be their attendants. Since they have various issues, they scream, run, argue, cry and have random outbursts that are unsettling and frightening. The "Shaniqua" who brings them there so she can surf the net or talk on the phone doesn't manage them so they disturb anyone trying to read or concentrate. If I acted like this, the library employees would be asking me to leave but hey never say anything to the attendants about the mentally disabled dependents that they bring to overrun the peace - and the rights of normal patrons - in the small library. I understand they can't control themselves - that is why they should be somewhere else if the Shaniquas that bring them are not going to control them.

The library is a little difficult to spot from the main street. So if you are traveling on Taylor Road it's in the cut a little ways pass the Sam's Club and just before you get to the light before the HWY 664. There are two entrances/exits for this location. It's also right next to the Treasurer's Office which is open during the week only. Parking is limited and usually fills up quickly on evenings and weekends. if you visit at night the parking lot it well let but still be extra careful. Like I mentioned above "it's in the cut" Besides the norm: books, magazines, videos and accessible computers, this library also post fliers of events going on in or around the area not just in Chesapeake. This location also hosts events for everyone of all ages. It's always a pleasant visit when my daughter and I visit here. The availability of materials we wish to check out are not always a win for us, but they have a "place on hold" policy and we receive alerts via emails when items are ready for pick up - this is a feature that I love. This library isn't super big, but it does the job and it's convenient for us. There is never a wait to check out items (self check out) or a wait for a computer station. Make sure you apply for a Chesapeake library card and if you are a Chesapeake resident - it's free and you can use the card at all Chesapeake Public Libraries. If it still applies, you will receive a credit card type card and a key chain library card. Conference rooms are available for renting as well - not sure if a fee applies, but the space usually holds up to 50 people or less. We like it here and will continue to visit - Have fun and enjoy life!

There are three branches to the city of Suffolk's library system: the Morgan Memorial Library in…read morethe downtown area, the North Suffolk Library, and the Chuckatuck Branch Library. I had already visited the first two branches numerous times but had never quite made it to the Chuckatuck Branch. I decided it was time to remedy that and made my way there recently to check it out. The Chuckatuck Branch is small and located on the outskirts of town, which -combined with their limited hours- is why I hadn't managed a visit yet. As you near the library situated next to Saunders Supply Company, you spot the sign, which screams, "We have internet!" Only in rural towns will you find libraries needing to broadcast this fact. The "parking lot" is small and not marked but trust me when I say you won't have any trouble finding a spot. Upon entering, a librarian looked up to greet me. She explained that the library has been recently refurbished. A little history on the place: back in the 1920s, a group of women wanted to open a library for the community. They began working at it, but sadly, it failed. Their dream was realized in 1983 thanks in great part to Saunders Supply Company who donated the site and building where the current Chuckatuck Library stands. This was definitely a group effort and brought to fruition in order to serve the more rural part of Suffolk. I spent a few minutes walking around to see what they had to offer; it didn't take me long. They have all of the usual genres--just not a large selection. However, you can always request books through the online catalogue and they will be sent over from other locations. There were a few computers being utilized as well and a room towards the back that perhaps holds small events. The biggest surprise was the shopping carts that are also over at the North Suffolk branch; it was somewhat humorous to see them in such a small library. It's difficult to give a rating to a place such at this. While it is extremely small and underequipped compared to the other branches--who am I to judge its value to the community it serves? If you decide to check it out, I recommend also combining the trip with a visit to Lone Star Lakes Park just around the corner. Books to ignite the mind; nature to soothe the soul.

This location still offers library events for kids, adults and families. There are programs available at various times and days. The staff is friendly and helpful. I have often seen my familiar staff from different locations at this spot. There is also a couple computers for use as well as a nice seating room in the back perfect for story time. The parking is small and limited. A busy program like the Eclipse viewing had me parking across the street at the store. Otherwise I have been able to park fairly close to the door.

They offer free classes for high school or college students needing to learn PowerPoint and other work or school related programs. Copy & printers available, private study rooms, computers, this little library seems to have it all. You can rent several books and DVDs at a time which we take full advantage of. They offer free classes for all children ages at different times throughout the year- my toddler loved attending where they read stories and had fun learning activities. Register online for the free toddler classes. Bathrooms are clean and have baby changing stations. This month they will be having the "Teeny Tiny Farm's Baby Zoo" which we are excited to atrend !

I love to come here to work on schoolwork and to knock-out online things that need to be done in peace and quiet. One thing I will say is to be sure to call ahead and make sure they are open. Do not depend on the websites open and close hours. I arrived at 10:30am on Friday morning to a closed building even though they claim to be open 10am to 5pm on Fridays. The library is minutes from the mall minutes from a gas station minutes from a gym this is just perfect in my opinion. Very seldom do I use any other services other than the desk area to do independent work. Even though I do have a library membership in case I do decide to check out anything I just love being able to come and work in a neutral environment it's not super quiet in here especially if mothers or Guardians are with children but still it's nothing that's unbearable. The staff is super friendly always helpful. Every time I come in I'm greeted with a smile. The restrooms are always tidy! Upstairs and downstairs areas and handicap accessible. There are Stadium size rooms as well just an efficient building and location that holds a lot of events from graduations to seminars. But if you haven't been here definitely check them out. This past year, I've witnessed some graduates come and take their senior photos and evidently that's something that's allowed I've never seen anyone question them... I Love all the natural light that comes in as well petfect for pictures on a bright day. Have fun and enjoy life :)

Recently my wife and I attended an annual genealogy event dubbed "Moonlight Madness". It has been on hold the last three years with the pandemic. A sign up was required and I did not see it advertised. I accidentally ran across it. Unfortunately the event was poorly attended. However, the program was informative for a beginner and the staff was strong. The librarians are experts in the field of genealogy research. After the formal program which was held after library hours we had time to do our own research on provided computers with high speed internet. Staff was available to assist with specific genealogy databases. We were allowed free of charge to receive print offs. Hopefully next year when the event is sure to continue its advertised better for improved attendance. You do not need a program to begin your research into family history. The databases are free to use with a library card. As well there is assistance if needed. The City of Virginia Beach has wonderful resources for its residents at its libraries throughout the town. Look on their website for programing that your family may be interested in. Consider using VB Libraries if you do not already.
