Old Dog Haven Forever Rescue Norton!

ODH is a great group filled with amazing people who want to help these Senior Dogs with medical issues! I am a Foster to 13 yr old Norty. Norty has a level 4 heart murmur, severe arthritis and advanced dry eye in both eyes. ODH handles all his medical costs and the members have decades of experience in helping both the dogs and their Foster care givers! So glad I got involved in ODH!

We have fostered for Old Dog Haven for about 2.5 years. I can't believe anyone would write a bad review for this amazing organization, but I can't speak to others experiences, only my own. I have witnessed two amazing, unadoptable dogs get moved from a shelter into ODH hands. ODH truly takes any old dog and gives them a loving home for their final days. I don't know any other rescue who is this dedicated to the animals. I can't imagine our lives or the lives of these dogs without Old Dog Haven. If you're reading this review wanting to foster, reach out on the website and tell them you're interested. It may be that your home is unsuitable for older dogs (you have to remember, these guys have years of experience and each restriction likely has a story behind it). But if you can't foster please consider transport as another option. If you're looking to donate to ODH, take some time to look through the doggie profiles on the ODH website. You can sponsor a dog and put a nice message. I know it's corny but I totally read those messages to my dogs when they get a new sponsor :) I wish all dogs were able to live out their days as well as these ODH dogs. We can't change the lives they had before they were with us, but we can love the crap out of them for the time they have left!

I have raised money for years for Old Dog Haven with their Walk for Old Dogs. My husband and I adopt senior and/or special needs Cavaliers and English Toy Spaniels, specializing in heart conditions. And we know how costly it can be. After years of fundraising they finally got an English Toy (they are not common) and we were able to be his final refuge fosters. Banjo was with us for 2 and a half years. He was in heart failure and had all sorts of health issues but was happy as can be. Old Dog Haven paid for all his specialist and his many, many medications. While we currently don't have a final refuge foster we continue to raise funds for ODH because we know first hand how well they treat the dogs in their care.

Nothing but good things to say about this organization. I've worked with them for years as a veterinary hospital manager and as a refuge foster. They do everything for their dogs and always put the dog's well-being above all else (including argumentative folk's feelings as you can tell from some of those reviews). The work they do is selfless and so important- they deserve all the support we can give them as a community.

We started the final Refuge Program 6 years ago & loved the experience, we have stayed in the Program ever since. Old Dog Haven is an amazing organization, that goes above and beyond for the over 300 dogs in their care. Since we started 6 years ago, we have had 5 dogs live out their retirement with us in the Final Refuge Program. It's an amazing experience each time & we feel lucky to be apart of it.

I've been fostering and donating for Old Dog Haven for about 15 years. What we do for old dogs is amazing! And the money is spent on vet bills mostly as these older dogs can be expensive. But seeing the change from "death warmed over" to a happy, healthy, loved dog is so rewarding. And the group is very generous with their help, guidance and money when the dogs need it. There is nothing better than an old dog and I'm so glad I found this group and got involved.

I got involved in Old Dog Haven after losing my dog of 10 years in September 2021. I became a forever foster to my first dog in October and then a second in December. The process has been so easy & it's been so wonderful that they make sure these dogs get any care that they need. These 2 dogs have brought so much joy to me and are doing so much much better now than when they arrived. I highly recommend this organization.

Since our area has a high adoption rate, this facility takes out of state dogs from over crowded shelters. What an incredible program! You can find dogs from California, Texas, all over. The new facility is clean, well setup and bright. The animals are all well cared for and the staff is very friendly. They were honest about any issues they had observed with the dogs & had temperament tested them, I really appreciated that. Coming into the shelter at an older age and with several (treatable) medical conditions, some shelters would have chosen to put the two old gals I recently adopted down, I am forever grateful Skagit did not. They are full of energy (I guess no one told them they are old) & joy. Every day is better with them as my companions. Thank you Skagit Humane Society staff and volunteers for all you do!

While I was there, I noticed a little pug and asked about her. They told me she wasn't available for adoption. I could see why -- her butt was prolapsed and there was liquid poop and blood all over her kennel. She was panting, whining, and frantically trying to get out. It was really upsetting to see. I spoke with the manager, who told me not to worry, that they had it under control and the dog was fine. I left feeling terrible. I came back a few days later and the poor pug was still in the same condition -- prolapse, bloody diarrhea, the whole thing. She still looked miserable. I'm really concerned that they don't have the animals' best interest at heart. A prolapsed rectum is painful, and there was clearly blood coming from her. I just don't understand how a person could look at that and think it's okay to leave her like that. This experience has me seriously questioning the level of care the animals are getting. I wanted to support the shelter, but I left feeling heartbroken and worried. I'm still looking to adopt a dog, but after this experience I don't feel confident adopting from here.

After that you can bring the dog back but the fee would not be returned. We were told Lilly had some cat aggression issues we would have to work with which we were prepared to do. There was no meet and greet with our pets. The dog was aggressive, attacking our dog every time she saw it and attacked another dog at our trainers facility. At that point Karen from The Pit Stops Here sent an email stating they may not be able to finalize the adoption as they were very concerned about the safety of the animals involved. Not wanting to get any more attached we brought Lilly back. At that time we were asked if we wanted our $200.00 adoption fee back. When we replied that we did Karen promised to send us a check. The next day I received an email stating the fee was not refundable. We had the dog less than a week.

Karen, the founder, saw it as me having a "laundry list" of expectations, she turned her nose up at me and declined my application (all from ONE email). My family owns a very successful 5 star dog and cat boarding resort. My dogs come to work with me every day where they can go swimming, play in group play and go on nature walks/group plays. I also own a house in Juanita with a fully fenced back yard, walking distance from the lake. Now, if you took the time to speak with me further, met me and my dogs and did a home inspection and then chose to deny me an adoption....fine. But I can't stand people on their high horses, making quick judgments and then allowing a fantastic dog to remain on petfinder for MONTHS because no one meets your standards. In the end it's the dogs that are suffering.

My most recent visit, I boarded my two dogs for 8 nights and had given instructions to give my dog his anxiety medication once daily. Upon pick up, I was told he didn't receive his medication and specific wording from the worker (Colleen) was "it's as needed right" despite giving specific instructions for once daily AND the pill bottle saying the same. I called once I got my dogs home to ask why the medication wasn't given and the workers exact words were "I forgot" and "I just got back from vacation and didn't see his medication written on the board." She did say he got the med the two days she wasn't there and still charged me for those days. After giving it some thought, I decided that mistakes happen and I was willing to continue to board my dogs there for my next trip. I called to reserve them a spot and was told they were full. I called back to ask to be placed on a waiting list and the same worker said she would call me by the end of the day the next day and let me know if she had anything open up. I never received a call. I asked for Bruce and Kal to be roomed together, as I was told all 3 couldn't share a room, because Bruce has become very bonded to his brother since joining our family 3 years ago. They share a kennel sometimes and sleep together every night. We were surprised when the receptionist told us upon pick-up on Sunday that we couldn't room Kal and Bruce together next time because Bruce just lost it and attacked Kal. First they said it happened Saturday night, then upon further questioning, said they found him like that Sunday morning. Either way, I should have been contacted immediately. When they walked my poor boy out, his jowls were swollen 3 times their size!!! He could barely walk and just appeared to have been through the wringer. The woman said she bathed him "to get the blood off" but he still looked dirty and smelled so I bathed him when we got home. The water ran yellow with the feces in his fur. But they bathed him? he could barely even stand during the duration I had to clean him up. She pointed out a small cut by his ear but I see scratches all over his body, no open wounds, but on his forearm there was a red gash from elbow to wrist! Red, but not open. Like when you scratch yourself from an allergic reaction, like a mosquito bite maybe, except he can't reach there and if another animals, big or small, dog or even cat, got ahold of him, it wouldn't look like that. His face feels like Braille with all the small...cuts? all over his face. We are constantly asking "what happened to you???" Of course the people there said well it must have been his Bruce but he didn't have a mark on him. So Kal just laid there and took it? But wouldn't Bruce's mouth have some sort of wear if he tore up another dog? Knowing our dogs, we don't believe one bit. I have no idea what could have happened to him in there, none of his small scars point to any kind of abuse but you can bet I will never return to that facility should my life depend on it. It is sad a local business like that cannot be trusted for 2 nights!!! What about people boarding for longer?!?! It makes me sad considering I am a big supporter of small business but please reconsider when looking to board here. Get a tour, interview the staff-and the owner! He tried to word play us too but saying his staff was so upset about what happened to Kal...then why didn't you call me immediately upon finding him like that? And why does your story keep changing? I'm only thankful it wasn't worse and he has seemingly recovered well with some gabapentin and rest.
