Just because I can't afford everything in a store doesn't mean I can't enjoy shopping there. Likewise I don't take home everything I CAN afford from a thrift store. Shopping is fun for the experience-the visual (love, love, love the architecture and exposed brick), the aromatic (lotions and creams for trying! - yum, Eucalyptus was my fav), the inspiration (I WISH my living room could look like that) and the hunt! I found Christmas clearance half off and a regular clearance section tucked in the back. I felt 100% welcome and no one fussed over me while I browsed, just the way I like it. I was able to try on a cute halfprice dress in the comfy fitting room up front before buying and chat with the owners (?) at the register while paying. They were super hospitable and gracious. There were so many fun and beautiful things to look at. Great selection of sweet baby things, unique greeting cards (I bought 2), beautiful decorative items and lots of practical things for around the house too. My Saturday afternoon shopping experience was great, and this was one of my favorite stops in downtown Bryan. read more

I like the store itself and used to go in every time we ate lunch at Madden's (having the two of them connected was brilliant). Since Madden's has closed, to so many people's chagrin, I rarely have a reason to drive to N Bryan. The Market Place is a place to go if you enjoy looking at old architecture, as are many buildings in that area. The walls help keep your eyes off the price tags I think. I don't understand the people complaining though. When you go to a specialty boutique of any type you know the prices will be stupidly high. That's part of the fun of looking at the pieces. Knowing I was not about to pay $36 for a stinky candle when there are tons of places here in town to get better ones & I can tie a ribbon on it. My most absolute thing to do even now as an almost 50 yr old, when I get completely ignored or condescended to because of my looks is to walk around the store and touch EVERYTHING! My tribe all feel the same way pretty much. Rearranging displays on side tables. Fingerprints on mirrors. Definitely trying out the "do not sit" chairs & couches, I mean if you don't try them how do you know if you want them. If I'm expected to pay $3500 for a Laz-y-Boy I'm checking it out first! I used to come in dressed in blue Jean shorts and softball shirts or some kind of printed shirt, with hair a mess & mascara on a good day. Not to mention I weighed about as much as a Volkswagen back then. So I wasn't deemed good enough to even get a welcome on most days. But what the wonderful employees, who I hope work on commission never realized was that me & a couple of other people in our group of 4 tried to ask about a certain bedroom suite repeatedly. I wanted to see if it came in a king size and if so I wanted to buy the set. Considering a queen with no mattress & two side tables was $8500 I can only imagine what a king would have been. Oh, to jog your memory it was the set by the front door that looked like a log cabin kind of. Well I ended up going to Dirt Road Rustics and getting a bed I liked better WITH a mattress, two tables, and a dresser for right around $5000 with free delivery. My point is the store is nice and pretty for the right kind of people. If you are a Jr League and Stepford wife this is the store for you! Everyone else, I'll see you at the Walmart! read more

Visually - 5** Vignettes galore - from gift, home, infants, cards, kitchen, furnishings, hostess, clothing, jewelry and even a cafe. The rustic charm of the building along with creaking wood floors were great. Price wise and value - 1* Being in the industry and aware of price points and/or if it's that "one of a kind" item - this store misses the mark in my book. This place is a visual delight, from the trendy warehouse of the old brick walls, to the aged creaking wooden floors. Merchandise is displayed as visually pleasing partitions to segment the varied stock. The plus is that everything looks beautifully placed, the minus is that everything is so tightly packed that walking can be an adventure... and there is also an adjoining trendy restaurant too (not reviewed here). The merchandise is hardly exclusive; you can get these things most anywhere, so don't be fooled by price mark downs that show you what a great "deal" you're getting. All that being said, enjoy wandering the store and buy something beautiful and wonderful for your home that you absolutely don't need, but you want anyway. From kitchen to living room and everything in between, I'm sure you'll find something to make you smile. Oh wow, almost forgot!!! You MUST go during the holiday season! The beauty of everything in the store is enhanced by the holiday music that just seems to create an aire of whimsy... that and the smell of spiced apple cider will certainly make you want to stay and wander the place. read more

Went in today after lunch at Madden's. They were busy with lots of Christmas items at 50% off. I filled up my basket and went to pay. After waiting in line for 15 minutes with no movement, I put my basket down and left. The 2 older cashiers could not seem to get anyone checked out. They definitely need more help on sale days!! I was very disappointed. The store is beautiful but expensive so 1/2 price was a win. If only I could have been helped! read more

Cute things in here but so incredibly over priced! I understand you get what you pay for, but how is a candle stick $405... And marked down to clearance for $175?! Lots of very pretty pieces but a buffet starts around $3600... If you have more money than sense you'd love this place. Staff can be haughty... We like a lot of the pieces that are on sale here, but as young professionals a few things are out of our price range. Nonetheless, you get a sense that the buyers have a good sense of style and quality. We purchased a beautiful library table (to use as a dining table) and it was at a greatly reduced price (I recommend the "SALE" area in the back of the store). The saleswoman wasn't pushy, but was very friendly and understood that it was a large purchase we'd have to think about. When I called a few days later, they were happy to take my credit card information over the phone and then had no problem delivering it for us (at a modest cost). In fact, the same saleswoman that helped us showed up with the delivery guys -- talk about service! We'll definitely return and likely purchase more when we have more disposable income... ;) read more

I really love this place. The clothes, jewelry, home scents, furniture, accent pieces, all are incredibly beautiful. I definitely love the jewelry. It's all beautifully made and ecclectic, like pretty much everything in the shop. The home scents are almost all lovely, except for a couple of notable exceptions that I will mention below. The furniture is elegant reproductions of antiques or repurposing of antiques. This is also true of the accent pieces. Every piece made me want it horribly. This is a most dangerous store. Good thing my husband was with me, as if he was not, I may have lost all reason. I am not giving it 5 stars because of a few cons. First, for reproductions, the prices are extremely high. Some of them eyewateringly so. But, you can get some great ideas here, so I can't ding it more. Lastly, in the linen section, they were burning a candle that was supposed to smell like suede. Instead it smelled strongly of burning electrical insulation. It made my eyes sting and choked me. As a result, I could not shop in that section of the store. Oh well, there was much more to look at and I could easily get away from the smell. I will go back here every time I go to Bryan. read more

Old Bryan Marketplace/Maddens is a shopping and dining destination! Today, I spent 3 hours doing just that. Lunch was fabulous...forget about your diet! That kicked off our shopping adventure. If Kay Conlee, the owner, is in the store, you might find her sitting in a chair close to the cash register. Make sure you introduce yourself to her. She'll remember you the next time your in. If you run into a great looking guy named Grant Conlee, he's the designer. I've never left the store without a bag filled with clothing and amazing accessories. The Conlee family knows exactly what we in Texas love, great comfortable clothing, home decor you won't find anywhere else and a dining experience prepared by Chef Tai. A delightful day! read more

I wouldn't! Went in ready to spend some money (needed a sofa, etc.) and got completely ignored by the staff. I asked the woman in front a question and she never gave me a straight answer. However, I got a whole story on the building and what not. I left slightly confused because my question wasn't answered. It's just not worth the time to not get quality service. My money will go elsewhere. I also got the impression that there was some type of hight drama going on with the staff, which is so off-putting to me. I did eat at Madden's restaurant. The service was spectacular and so was the food. read more
