Everybody feels uneasy about goats. Why do they taste sodding identical? Eating goat's cheese brings me as much joy as sniffing Big Billy Goat Gruff after he's been in the gym, something I first discovered in the restaurant that's so good they named it twice, Tapas Tapas. A combination of agreeable staff and out-of-the-way location make this the ideal place to get gradually sozzled on wine and bask in the warm wooden coziness and brick-walled splendour of a restaurant with enormous amounts of quiet humility. Still, I'd rather shoot a sprout off my dog's head with a flamethrower than try the goat's cheese again.

Despite the huge pieces of cured ham leg hangign from the ceiling a la authentic castillian restaurants I can't say that it was the best Spanish food I have tried - not even in Liverpool now that it feels our economy is based on Tapas places! At around £4 - £5 pounds for a plate this is about avaerage for a tapas restaurant, unfortauntely so was the food.

Where to start, some very good bits. Some very not so good bits!…read more First of all I have to say that the staff are very attentive and lovely, so I cannot fault them at all! So all thats left is the venue and the food. Lets start with the venue - Berry st. If you are on Berry St in Liverpool you are within minutes of good food and great cocktails. The venue itself is one those where the interior designers have tried the upmost to get it back to brick with the sort of I can't be bother all look and individual lights which is OK i guess but my main issue is one that where we were sat ( we had booked beforehand ) is that I was sat facing my partner and with her looking at me . I couldn't see her due to the sun shining into my eyes and no blinds to pull down or anything it was equally blisteringly hot so I was almost sweating. So not the best start before actually getting any food! Speaking of the food it went from great to ok to good to ok to not sure! We ordered the ribs which were to die for!!! Followed by the sourdough with tomato and garlic which again was lovely, but following on from this was the show string fries with two eggs and chorizo . Firstly these are brilliant shaped into tiny fries but this also means that there is little potato within to soak up the oil so they seem to just hold the oil. Also seemingly to my taste over salted and i normally have a lot of salt, the eggs were nice and fresh. The salted mushrooms again very creamy and tasty on more sourdough which was just as nice. One thing that I personally feels really let the meal down was the Charcuterie platter priced at £20 was full of meat and good meat it was but it just seemed to be lacking in character . I don't know why but it just seemed to have a bit of dip based at the end with small bread sticks which Ill assume are there as fillers, that would have been nice with some olives over that platter Its ok, I won't be rushing back and I possibly would have enjoyed it if i wasn't so hot in the sun. Will still recommend !

The restaurant was about half full so it wasn't too crowded or vacant which makes for a nice atmosphere. The service was friendly and attentive. We ordered one each of the 2 gin drinks on special and they were both divine. Next the chorizo plate, the Spanish ham plate, the blue cheese plate and the tortilla with a side of the sourdough bread. The meats were exceptional, the blue cheese was insanely good the bread was good, not exceptional in any way, but still good and the tortilla was a complete miss for us. Shame too because I rarely see it on a menu and when I do I always order it but alas it was not good. It is possible I am spoiled since I have had homemade tortilla learned from a Spanish grandma. When the manager came by and saw we were finished he started to clear the plates and enquired about the barely eaten tortilla. I explained we didn't like it and he immediately said he would take it off the bill, which we hadn't expected at all. He was very friendly and did not seem offended which is always refreshing. He stayed and chatted with us for a bit and then brought 2 after complimentary dinner drinks to us, also completely unexpected and kind. The drinks were liquor 43 and it was really really good. We had never had it before and are happy to know about it now thanks to his kindness and excellent customer service. We highly recommend this place!!

Cafe Porto has a very homely feel to it because of its basic, rustic wooden chairs and tables, maps of Iberia on the wall next to photos of Liverpool and mementos from Portugal. The only thing that confused me was the Cuban music playing gently in the background. I couldn't wait to tuck into my smoked suasage and tomato tortilla but I will be honest I was expecting a wrap, forgetting that a Spanish/Portuguese tortilla consists of a potato and egg, quiche like slice. I was pleasantly surprised though as it was hot and delicious. The girls behind the counter did not seem dismayed by the quiet period as they kept busy preparing food for the evening menu and as I waited to place my order it was good to see the home made food being prepared in the modest, almost domestic like kitchen.

The Cafe itself is light and friendly and in the summer months has a small outdoor seating area which can be a nice place to watch the world go by whilst you enjoy your meal. The food is also light and refreshing with home made humous, salads paninis and other sandwiches as well as a variety of other foods. All of these are reasonably priced and I would recommend the Greek salad with its' delicious feta cheese priced at £4.95. Everything within Cafe Porto seemed authentic and real, it was as though there was real passion in the food and they made a fan out of me straight away. They also provide a catering service with the executive package having great variety and still only costing £8.95 per person which is fantastic for what you recieve. Visit Cafe Porto whilst you are in Liverpool it is a great little establishment which screams passion, care and above all flavour. So from breakfast to dinner you will not be let down, but my own personal recommendation would be a deliciously light lunch.

Your palate will be convinced you have wondered into a bar in San Sebastián or Vitoria-Gasteiz and you will be gagging for a shot of txakoli to go with your pintxos. Simple ordering principle means you choose short sticks @£1.50 or tall sticks @£3 and they will serve up whatever is fresh on the day. If I could find fault here it is relative to the service suffering when they are particularly busy but, even though the kitchen may choke, the Spanish waitstaff are brilliant and take the time to make sure you are kept updated. From the alcohfrolics point of view they have scored a Bullring bullseye with their locally made Gin & Cava cocktail bar downstairs and having draught Estrella Damm and Alhambra scores massive points for those yearning for some Basque ambiance. I have been here multiple times now cos, as you already know, I like a side of food with my drinks and the small plates they serve are more'ish and authentic. Don't forget to finish off with some Cava & the Churro's and all you will be missing is some Spanish sunshine on your face :) #Olé,OléOlé,Oléééééé

This location was recommended by a local so we tried it. Upon entering, it is a smaller establishment with a second floor. There are more tables up here, but it is a little warmer. The decor is very simple. This is one area they could possibly improve on. The staff was very friendly and courteous. They helped us to choose things from the menu and explained the items to us with detail. We tried several of the dishes here. We started with the flatbread and hummus. This was homemade and very delicious! We then had the ox cheek ragu and the chistorra sausage. Both of these dishes were very flavorful, especially the ox cheek. This was the first time I've had ox cheek and it was quite unexpected. The sausage was a little on the greasy side. Ox cheek won that round. Then we had the cauliflower and the Indian spiced bean. Both of these dishes were absolutely wonderful. This round was a tie. Last round we had the sea bass and the coley. Both of the fish dishes were very good, but the coley was phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant as it is tasty and priced very well. We will return at some point!
