Maybe I'm going overboard with the five stars; this isn't the Arclight Hollywood. It's a quaint…read moretwo-theatre venue, but they are big time supporters of the Durango Independent Film Festival, and we love them for that! Plus, their chairs were comfortable, bathrooms clean, clear picture, and great sound. Assigned stadium seating isn't always needed, so it seems.

Cute, local theater but staff is incredibly rude…read more We stopped in with some fresh coffee from Starbucks up the street and bought tickets to a movie that was just starting. We had our coffees in our hand as we bought the tickets then made our way over to concessions to purchase some snack. We purchased both from the same person so it was strange after we made our payment, they then decided to let us know we couldn't bring our coffees in. As my friend and I were deciding to see the next showing instead so we could finish our drinks and catch the film from the beginning, the manager decided to walk over and tell us if we saw the later showing she wouldn't refund our snacks. I found all of this so strange and rude so we decided to leave and go to another theater instead. The manager wouldn't let up and kept interrupting us to let us know if the other theater wouldn't let us in with our drinks either and even if we tried they were the only theater showing the movie. It was such a strange experience we got out of there as fast as possible and most likely won't go back until there is a staff turnover.

Powerhouse Science Center - So many fun interactive science things for kids to do! Even for the big kids too!

Beginning with the sad little air contraption on the floor that was supposed to keep ping pong balls afloat but, sadly, could hardly manage consistent air current, I figured Powerhouse was going to be a very brief and disappointing adventure. I was totally wrong. Considering the exhibits occupy the square footage of about half an elementary school cafeteria, there's a ton going on here. Like our hometown science museum, Explora, much of the fun around here is interactive, and many of the machines and gadgets are hand-made and well maintained. The building itself is historic and has a lot of character. There's an activity room for toddlers and plenty for the older set to engage with; I'd say any kid aged, oh, 14 and under can have a good time here. And then there's me, age 39, who sat with the Legos for about a half hour. Sorry, kid. This is a really great addition to a terrific town that doesn't offer a great deal for little ones, save some great parks. It's walking distance from all of the action on Main street, so parents can really make a day out of downtown Durango. Close your visit by wandering the fun, somewhat sketchville walking bridge that drapes the Animas river, outside. Once it started swaying, my daughter was more than a little freaked about physics.
