I never planned on being a single mother, but sometimes life sets you on an unexpected path. Being a single mom is one of the hardest, most empowering things I've ever done. I wish I could return to the moment in time when I enrolled my three young children and myself for LTSD. I wish I could whisper in that new single mom's ear and say, "This is a flagship moment in your new life; this is going to transition you and your children into finding you are stronger than you ever imagined." Together we have entered numerous karate competitions, ranked up several belts, and dragged ourselves to class when we would rather stay home on screens; we have found grit, bravery, hope, and a new family...a karate family. I am also an educator. The students and young black belt instructors are a vision of hope in a world that sometimes feels hopeless; watching them instruct my children makes me know the world will be okay. Karate kicks hopelessness. All the AP and honor classes in the world could not compare to what path this will set your child on. I used to carry a grief that darkened my soul. You never forget a pain like a fog that lingers in your mind and heart forever. And one day, that fog lifted, and I think that one day was when we started karate.
