I had to start my first review for the 2015 year off with one of my absolute favorite places in…read moretown! Phil Clark's Martial Arts Academy (which I'm just gonna call PCMAA from hereon out because words) is, hands down, one of my favorite places to get my fitness on in this side of the country! You get to learn self-defense, BJJ, TKD, and you get a great workout/make awesome friends while you're at it. What more could you ask for? :D My friend found this place when we ventured out here for rotations and told me about it since he knew I'd been on the prowl for an MMA gym of sorts. My mom wouldn't let me learn martial arts when I was little because she thought I'd turn all manly, but seeing how I turned out anyway, she really should've just let me. (Too bad so sad.) It's better late than never though! Anyway! Ever since August-ish of last year, I've been coming to the TKD & BJJ classes here as often as my lovely schedule will allow. Phil is quite possibly one of the nicest souls to grace this town and/or planet, and I am so, so glad that I found PCMAA. :] I felt super welcome and comfortable there from day one, which is really saying a lot, considering how up close and personal you get when you're rolling with other people in BJJ. He's also an amazing instructor who honestly goes above and beyond what he has to in order to best help us to learn. (My somewhat sporadic appearances make it difficult to remember what I have and haven't learned sometimes. ._.) We're super lucky to have him, as he's had extensive experience with karate, TKD and BJJ. The classes currently being offered include... -One More Round Fitness: a boxing full-body conditioning-style boot camp of sorts -Gracie Jiu Jitsu: we're affiliated with Relson Gracie, so he and Rhalan come out here and hold seminars! :D!!! -Taekwondo: a mixture of traditional & modern--depending on what you'd rather learn, he teaches both the forms as well as self-defense and kickboxing (*Full schedule is listed at the bottom of this review!*) On days where I actually am free, I often end up hanging out here hours after classes have already ended to talk/hang out/roll with other students or with Phil. The environment here is very, very friendly and welcoming--it's definitely a family-like atmosphere, which I've really grown to love and appreciate out here. All ages and fitness/experience levels are welcome, as classes will be tailored to the students. :] The first trial class is free, and there's a referral program for current students ($15 off their next month of classes if they refer a new student and that student signs up for the month!). Discounts are available for First Responders (+ a smaller discount available for their spouse/children)! -Kids' Classes- Gracie Jiu-Jitsu offered 6-6:45pm (TR) TKD offered 6:45-7:30pm (TR) -Adult Classes- Kickboxing offered 11:30-12:30pm (MW) + 7-8pm (M) Gracie Jiu-Jitsu classes offered 11:30-12:30pm (TR), 6-7pm (MW) and 8:30-9:30pm (TR) Taekwondo offered 7:30-8:30pm (TR) One More Round Fitness (full body boxing workout) offered 5:30-6:30pm (M-R) Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Phil-Clarks-Martial-Arts-Academy/145511766835 Definitely come check this place out if you're ever in or around the Ashland area. I promise it'll be worth your while! :]

His instructor Master Chris Perry, a 7th Degree Black Belt in tae kwon do, teaches the highest quality martial arts. For this mom, it is also Master Perry's focus on character development and leadership skills that sets his instruction apart from others. Master Perry teaches everything step-by-step in a positive and encouraging environment. His classes combine physical training and discipline with daily life skills: focus, self-control, confidence and respect. During my son's three years of practice, I've watched him grow more confident, show and earn respect, and mature into a young man I'm really proud of. Thank you, Master Perry!

My son started when he was five and has now been at it for over a year. I am a huge fan of how…read moreMaster Perry does not dumb down the instruction and instead has him work right along side and learn from those around him with experience. Students are all taught to respect each other and to conduct themselves appropriately while also getting an engaging workout. Master Perry understands when to be firm and instill discipline but also knows how when not to push too far. He knows how to work with kids and adults alike and never make it seem like one age set is treated any better or worse than another. Along with Master Perry I also have tons of respect and admiration for the other masters who instruct class as well as the black belts of all ages who never hesitate to assist those younger or less experienced. If you are looking for high quality Tae Kwon Do instruction I don't think you could do much better than Master Perry. Whether for you or for your child.

The cost is ridiculous, and if you wanna…read morecancel your membership they will wait until the end of your membership period so they can charge you again before they cancel it. They give belts to kids who don't deserve them and also make you pay to even TEST for a belt. Literally no where else is this a thing. This whole operation is a MONEY SCAM. The customer service is terrible and the teachers really don't know how to teach. I went here for 2 days in march, cancelled my membership a week later, and now in April a whole month later, even after coming into the dojo and filling out a cancelation form, i was charged again for the month of April ( i was also told to my face that i wouldn't be charged for April, but I still was, meaning the person who handles money or memberships at this gym either is incompetent or just doesn't do their job or they are all in on this huge scam down there. ) I will get my full refund. and a possible lawsuit is coming their way. Long story short, DO NOT COME HERE, THEY SCAM, SUPER EXPENSIVE, AND DONT ACTUALLY TEACH. I cant express how bad this gym is, please stay away like its the plague. Also I'm a young adult who joined another gym after this one and it really opened my eyes. So if you wanna learn Martial Arts or MMA or anything like that, DO NOT COME HERE, you will be scammed. Also When i went to get my refund for the month of April, they made me jump through every single hoop possible, at to this point i still haven't gotten my refund back. I really hope some people from this business see this review so they can be embarrassed by what people think of them. When you take advantage of younger people just because they are younger people, you deserve a terrible review like this.
