I'm going to be that guy and break Ohayo's longstanding chain of 5 star reviews. Sorry to be quite the unmutual, but...well. That said, I was impressed by the quality of Ohayo's fare and it'd be my first port of call for a Sunday evening sushi call (well, if I'm in the 2 mile delivery radius anyway). Them not taking card details over the phone was an early gripe and required a trip to an ATM, but given that it was an good takeaway experience I'll forgive them.
Being one of *those* evenings we decided to go a bit nuts. Miso soup, agedashi tofu, nasu dengaku, sashimi salad, tuna tataki, tuna avocado uramaki, White tiger uramaki (seabass on the outside, prawn tempura on the inside), and California rolls.
First off: good miso soup. It's simple enough (plus the paste-style packet stuff is really good), but I'm amazed how many places fail to get this right. No complaints here. Then the agedashi tofu and the nasu dengaku (aubergine with glazed miso topping) one of my favourite dishes of all time): neither of these are dishes cut out for travelling and by the time they arrived they did look a little worse for wear. However, I was really impressed by both: the nasu dengaku was very creamy without being overly oily (usually, the aubergine is deep fried which can lead to it soaking up the oil). Whilst it could have done with a little more topping, I was very impressed with how it turned out. The agedashi tofu was similarly delicious - although it'd been sitting in the dashi broth for a while, it wasn't saturated and falling to pieces. Moreover, the broth had excellent flavour.
I did enjoy the sushi component of our meal, but less so than the first two. The White Tiger Uramaki was definitely the highlight for me - I love seabass and I greatly enjoyed the crunch of the tempura in the roll. The tataki and the sashimi salad were ok, but not particularly inspiring. For example, I thought the tataki marinade was missing a little something. With the sashimi salad, obviously the fish is the main feature but I thought it could have been put together a little better. That said, the fish is of good quality, so I can't really complain too much.
In the end, we spent about £24 each on the meal. Gulp. We probably could have done without one of the sushi dishes but it is a bit on the steep side. That said, the overall quality is better than a lot of dine-in restaurants I've been to and, in London terms, the pricing is hardly outrageous. I'd definitely like to try a few more things here (and another set of White Tiger Uramaki), so it's likely I'll be returning customer. read more
