You walk in with your dog, close the gate behind, unleash, then let go through the second door. In the park there are tennis balls on the ground and a section where there are water pans. I'm not a fan of the still water in the pans, and usually empty and refresh when I arrive. There is plenty of space in the park for dogs to play with each other. There are also obstacles in the park for training. A picnic table with a roof above for you to sit down and relax while watching your dog(s) have fun. Certainly a place I recommend for a quick exercise and social activity for your dog.

We were on vacation from CT and were thrilled to find a dog park so close to Kittery Maine. The dog park was clean and I love that they have dog bowls there. Great place to take the doggies to run free on 40 acres, year round! Helpful tip: keep them on…read moreleash until you get out of the parking lot area and into the woods a bit, as there are many excited doggies and it can be overwhelming even for experienced, well socialized canines and owners. You will find friendly owners and dog friendly pedestrians. If your doggie strays out of sight, don't panic: the park loops around, and doggies usually find their way back sooner if you're calm and not yelling and agitated. Besides, the other people there are very helpful at letting you know where they are, so you can retrieve them :) I would add that the temp is cooler there by about ten degrees due to trees and ponds, and the terrain is mixed so switching from flip flops to sneakers even in summer is an excellent idea. Also, be prepared for Google maps to be confusing, the parking area is a bit downhill from where they tell you it is. Best advice I can give is enjoy a break from micromanaged vigilance, and plan on a few hours so you aren't panicked to get your doggies out of there, trust me they won't want to leave, Lol!

Even after doing my research, though, I did not know fully realize that the 40-acre Hinckley Park in South Portland was FOR dogs. Like, it's not just a trail that dogs are allowed on, which is what I assumed. It's a straight up dog park where leashes aren't required, and apparently neither is picking up after your canine friend. So, if you don't mind the occasional poo pile or the incredibly frequent dog interaction (read: being sniffed in awkward places, being jumped on, being growled at, or being rubbed on after a pup has taken a swim in the muddy water) then maybe this spot isn't for you. Which is too bad, because it really does offer very nice, relatively short walking paths - all very level and accessible to all kinds of walking abilities. There's also plenty of bird call, flowers, a tiny waterfall, two ponds fed Kimball Brook that you can apparently fish at, wooden bridges to cross them, etc. And did I mention lots...and lots...and lots...and lots of dogs. So, as a human: I probably will never come here again. But, if I were a dog: YES, PLEASE. Let's go for a double-u aye ell kay here EVERYDAY.

Plus with tons of other dogs there, he would work himself into a frenzy. However, there were countless water bowls and sprinklers for the dogs to stay cool and we ended up being there over an hour with no trouble at all!
