We stayed in a Villa (#601) which was the first one we were put in. After lugging our luggage through an un-shoveled walkway, arriving to the villa and unpacking our bags - the fireplace was not working - nor would the door lock - after complaining to front desk - we were moved to Villa #605 - again un-shoveled walkway, un-shoveled stairs, we were happy that our door was able to be locked. We discovered the TV and fireplace were not working in this unit either - Not wanting to pack up & switch rooms again - we settled for a 10% discount on the room The hotel staff we dealt with were very polite - The resort is overpriced in its current condition - the villa's are severely outdated and in need of repair & updating - the carpets were worn, and looked dirty, window treatments were out of date and shabby looking - visible cracks down the wall in the bedroom - the patio door looked like termites had been eating it and allowed huge draft into the dining area of the villa We ate at the onsite restaurant on the Friday night - service staff were friendly - food was not great - ordered the fish and chips - the batter of the fish was so overcooked, difficult to cut even with knife - and some of the fish inside the batter was not even cooked! Definitely will not book here again -

Normally, there is a package deal with meals for about $50 a day. From what I have experienced, that is a great price. They weren't offering the usual buffet at their weekend breakfasts, but instead delivered breakfast to customer's rooms upon demand. Any needs were accommodated efficiently as long as communication was followed through and the limited staff was given enough lead time. I had the bacon and eggs breakfast delivered, which was wrapped in plastic, and included eggs, bacon, home fries and toast, along with a fruit salad. The only thing missing was coffee. I didn't order coffee as I normally make my own at these type of events. I was fine without them making it for me. Other restaurant meals got good reviews from our crowd, and our communal meal Saturday night was nothing short of amazing, especially considering the short staff. Everyone ordered what they wanted off the fairly large menu, and the food came out hot and without a lot of waiting. Plenty of cocktails were made and there were a couple rounds bought by one of us, with everything going smoothly. I wouldn't guess that they were short-handed as we didn't feel it. As for accommodation, there are different cottages available. Everything from what looks like a tiny house that only has a front porch, a bedroom, and a bathroom, to a larger unit with jacuzzi and air conditioning. One of the structures is a sauna, which is a favorite in the winter apparently. The site has a sailing poster up for a local group, and has sailboats available for use. There are also canoes and peddle boats. In the seasonal section on their site, winter activities include snowmobiling packages as well as ice-fishing on the lake, which appears to be a specialty. Iconic Canadian activities that are sure to impress your guests from abroad. I can't say enough good about the staff I met on the weekend, just an amazing group of people, some of whom even joined us at our communal bonfire which ran late both Friday and at full tilt Saturday night until some rain put the fire out in the wee hours Sunday morning. Minden is nearby and has typical services, and my Fido phone had full bars at this location. Not far up the road is a famous lookout tower that gives an impressive view of the Fall colours from what I understand, and gets super busy at the height of that epic season in Ontario. Overall, everyone was happy with their stay at Red Umbrella Inn and I would love to return with anyone who would appreciate typical Canadian activities in a relaxed environment any time of year. Called to make a dinner reservation at 2pm on a random Tuesday, the mature lady sounded really stressed trying to "squeeze in" our reservation for 4 +high chair for baby and asked us to arrive earlier, so we came early before 5. They apparently are always full every night, so you need to make reservations sooner than later. Wasn't a great first impression along with an odd looking website. But when we arrived after a hard down pour we came to a third full restaurant inside at 4:30pm! It was mainly seniors and my family but it looked way better than their website and the waitresses were very sweet. All tables had reserved signs (so she wasn't kidding earlier) and service was fast at that time. Food came very fast, fresh and hot so my MIL had nothing to complain about! Didn't have room to try dessert but after hearing coffee wasn't fresh ground drip but the syrup machine kind we grabbed the bill. Menu is a bit all over the place, can't go wrong with their sandwiches burgers and fish & chips. Would go back to chill on patio next time

It's easy to tell why many of the families there keep coming back year after year. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. They made my wife dairy free dishes from scratch when she didn't feel like some of the other options and cooked up grilled cheese sandwiches for my kids for lunch when they didn't want their chicken wrap. The owner personally introduced my wife to the kids club counsellors so that she was more comfortable leaving them in the mornings to play. This went a long way in helping both of us relax. Besides the good food, great staff and amazing views. The other guests were so welcoming and friendly. Our daughters made friends instantly and we felt very comfortable letting them run around and play with everyone. It's a great culture that Shamrock Lodge has cultivated. With magicians, tubing, water skiing, canoes, kayaks, fireworks, and more. Shamrock Lodge really went above and beyond to always have something to do and look forward to. The only criticism, and its a big one, is that the rooms are not air conditioned. There was a portable air conditioner in the room but it was barely functional and the room was way too hot all the time. It was brutal and really took away from our enjoyment of the vacation. They really need to invest in proper air conditioning for the rooms.

A full service hotel with all 3 meals included, this getaway also provides immaculately clean rooms and thoughtfully kept grounds. There is a clean pool and sauna in the main lodge, and if you want to swim but aren't a pool person, not to worry because the lodge backs onto a gorgeously clean lake. A variety of watercraft such as canoes, stand up paddle boards, kayaks and paddle boats are available for patrons to borrow at any time. Motorized watercraft are also available for an hourly rental fee. We would, and plan to, return here.

We are a team with younger children, and parents made a point of supervising kids closely, following curfews, and being respectful to staff. Despite this, we were treated with suspicion and hostility from the moment staff realized we were a hockey team. On our first night, the hotel offered an empty room for kids to play mini sticks. The following day, when kids asked again, we were offered a different room that was dirty and had broken glass on the floor. Staff were notified, but no apology or concern was shown. That evening, while supervised kids were using the pool, another family (not part of our group) opened an unlocked side door and ran into the snow before jumping back into the pool. Some of our kids followed. There were no warning signs and the door was not locked. The pool was immediately closed by staff without testing water levels, and parents were falsely accused of children urinating in the hot tub. By 8:30 p.m., all children were in their rooms with parents. The following morning, our team manager received a rude email accusing our children of running the halls late at night and harassing guests--none of which occurred. The situation escalated further the next evening when staff aggressively confronted parents at the pool and accused a guest of having alcohol without cause. When another parent calmly attempted to speak to the desk manager to de-escalate, the staff member pushed past her and retreated to her office, where police were called. The OPP attended and confirmed there was no disorderly behavior. Everyone was allowed to remain for the night. Beyond staff behavior, the hotel itself was dirty and poorly maintained. Our room had a dead bug and personal items left behind, public areas were not well kept, and breakfast service was slow and inattentive. We would not recommend this hotel to families, sports teams, or anyone expecting professional service or basic cleanliness.
