Called to make a dinner reservation at 2pm on a random Tuesday, the mature lady sounded really stressed trying to "squeeze in" our reservation for 4 +high chair for baby and asked us to arrive earlier, so we came early before 5. They apparently are always full every night, so you need to make reservations sooner than later. Wasn't a great first impression along with an odd looking website. But when we arrived after a hard down pour we came to a third full restaurant inside at 4:30pm! It was mainly seniors and my family but it looked way better than their website and the waitresses were very sweet. All tables had reserved signs (so she wasn't kidding earlier) and service was fast at that time. Food came very fast, fresh and hot so my MIL had nothing to complain about! Didn't have room to try dessert but after hearing coffee wasn't fresh ground drip but the syrup machine kind we grabbed the bill. Menu is a bit all over the place, can't go wrong with their sandwiches burgers and fish & chips. Would go back to chill on patio next time

We stayed in a Villa (#601) which was the first one we were put in. After lugging our luggage through an un-shoveled walkway, arriving to the villa and unpacking our bags - the fireplace was not working - nor would the door lock - after complaining to front desk - we were moved to Villa #605 - again un-shoveled walkway, un-shoveled stairs, we were happy that our door was able to be locked. We discovered the TV and fireplace were not working in this unit either - Not wanting to pack up & switch rooms again - we settled for a 10% discount on the room The hotel staff we dealt with were very polite - The resort is overpriced in its current condition - the villa's are severely outdated and in need of repair & updating - the carpets were worn, and looked dirty, window treatments were out of date and shabby looking - visible cracks down the wall in the bedroom - the patio door looked like termites had been eating it and allowed huge draft into the dining area of the villa We ate at the onsite restaurant on the Friday night - service staff were friendly - food was not great - ordered the fish and chips - the batter of the fish was so overcooked, difficult to cut even with knife - and some of the fish inside the batter was not even cooked! Definitely will not book here again -

We stayed at the Best Western Mariposa with our family during our youngest son's hockey tournament,…read moreand this was by far the worst hotel experience we have ever had. We are a team with younger children, and parents made a point of supervising kids closely, following curfews, and being respectful to staff. Despite this, we were treated with suspicion and hostility from the moment staff realized we were a hockey team. On our first night, the hotel offered an empty room for kids to play mini sticks. The following day, when kids asked again, we were offered a different room that was dirty and had broken glass on the floor. Staff were notified, but no apology or concern was shown. That evening, while supervised kids were using the pool, another family (not part of our group) opened an unlocked side door and ran into the snow before jumping back into the pool. Some of our kids followed. There were no warning signs and the door was not locked. The pool was immediately closed by staff without testing water levels, and parents were falsely accused of children urinating in the hot tub. By 8:30 p.m., all children were in their rooms with parents. The following morning, our team manager received a rude email accusing our children of running the halls late at night and harassing guests--none of which occurred. The situation escalated further the next evening when staff aggressively confronted parents at the pool and accused a guest of having alcohol without cause. When another parent calmly attempted to speak to the desk manager to de-escalate, the staff member pushed past her and retreated to her office, where police were called. The OPP attended and confirmed there was no disorderly behavior. Everyone was allowed to remain for the night. Beyond staff behavior, the hotel itself was dirty and poorly maintained. Our room had a dead bug and personal items left behind, public areas were not well kept, and breakfast service was slow and inattentive. We would not recommend this hotel to families, sports teams, or anyone expecting professional service or basic cleanliness.

Yay! A bump-up review! Bala Bay Inn's Grill/Ghosts restaurant continues to impress each summer…read more This year we were really, really pleased by the great service. We arrived for our dinner after a rainstorm, and the outdoor patio where we like to enjoy our food was fairly soaked as a result. No worries, the hostess assured us, we are more than happy to seat you outside. We were allowed to pick a table and then she and a few servers set to work diligently wiping everything dry. That was much appreciated. The great service continued throughout our dinner -- attentive, prompt, really friendly. Food seemed better this visit, too. Last summer's scallop fiasco left me cold, but this year we really enjoyed the PEI mussels (oh, heaven), the spring rolls (surprisingly good for BFE Canada), the local pickerel (treat yourself if you've never, it's sweet, mild, and tender), and the fish and chips (with sweet potato fries). The only near-miss were the nachos. The chips were wonderful and clearly homemade, but the cheese was not melted which, to me, seems like a nacho given, right? Other toppings kicked nacho booty, tho, from the thick, tangy sour cream, smooth, silky guac, and crisp, fiery pickled jalapeños. They have a martini menu that will blow your mind and rivals any shcmancy big-town bar. There have to be damn near 50 varieties on that thing. My favorite is an apple martini with Goldschlager -- it tastes just like warm apple pie and has some cutesy name (they all do) I wish I could remember. We come to the Grill/Ghosts at Bala Bay Inn every summer and are rarely disappointed. Definitely worth a visit when you're in town. If you're ever in town...

It's dark, in need a huge dose of TLC, feels dirty and unkept. It might be exceptionally clean - it just has the feel of an ignored empty local haunt. The food is what you might expect from a frozen food driven restaurant - though it is a great source of a traditional Pizza Nova pizza to takeout if you need one. This might be the real calling of the premises. There are a few signs outside branding the restaurant conflicting things. It is a restaurant. It's a Pizza Nova. It has a huge sign saying "Fish and Chips". So what is it exactly? Im not sure it knows. A place to drink beer I suppose and wait for your pizza takeaway. And if it just branded itself as the local source for right out of the oven Pizza Nova pizza, it would be perfect. Try that and I think you won't be disappointed. Go beyond that and it's hard to predict. I can't pin exactly what it is that makes this a place we avoid. I can only say that it has, in its neglect, seem to have chosen to be nothing in particular and that's exactly what it feels like. The staff are nice, the location convenient - it just doesn't have much else (but Pizza Nova pizza!).

We decided to celebrated Canada Day with a culinary road trip, driving up to the beautiful North Kawartha, Ontario! I didn't know what to expect, so I did a bit more research and found out that they offer 5, 7, or 9 course blind tasting menus, as well as a la carte meals. Without hesitation, we went for the 9 course blind tasting with a shared wine pairing! Please remember to book your table in advance! The restaurant is located in a separate cottage house on the property, with a beautiful, serene view by the waters. The service was exceptional. The food from 'forest/farm-to-table' were unbelievable. The mini duck egg omelette, the smoked trout, and the brownie x ice cream dessert with the lavender were my favourite amongst the delicious dishes on the blind tasting menu. You can literally taste the freshness in every bite! In April 2017 last year, Viamede Resort also went tip-free. They believe in paying their staff fair wages from the start, and don't believe they should burden guests with extra fees. The price you see is the price you pay :) I really wish I could keep The Inn at Mount Julian a secret, but I really want to share with the world about this outstanding culinary experience! I can assure you, this will definitely be worth the 2-hour drive from Toronto! I would highly recommend this to adventurous foodies (like you!) out there :) . . . From the day before when we drove over to check out the resort and the dining options right up to when we walked out the staff were all very fresh faced and friendly and took their jobs seriously. You could tell the wanted to help and weren't just putting in time. The Inn itself is a beautifully restored on building. Nice wide planked floors and subtle, contemporary decor. The menu is not large ( a good thing ! ) but considering the small size of the place there is more than enough choices. The chef is trying to integrate local items into the menu ( spruce tips! ) with some success. Overall our meal, wine, service, and prices were all excellent. This place would definitely appeal to someone who wants a nice evening out after several days of cottaging it. Although it is fairly sophisticated for cottage country it still has a nice casual vibe so you can show up fairly casual without feeling out of place. Give it a go !

The bison strip loin dinner was a triumph! I also had the ribeye ragout with GF pasta, the pickerel chowder, the Caesar salad without croutons, and the poached prawns. My only note for the restaurant is to provide more GF desserts besides ice cream sundae. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I see a lot of poor reviews a few years ago. In terms of food and service a lot has changed for the better post-Covid. The comments about the decor are on point, though. The decor is a little dated but my terrace room was well appointed and very clean. I loved having the fireplace, whirlpool bathtub, and amazing view of Sturgeon Lake from my balcony. Overall a wonderful experience. I am already planning to return. :)
